Sony PS4 sales remain strong

Sony has offered up some new statistics on how well the PlayStation 4 game console is selling. Sony says that since the PS4 launched last year, over 5.3 million units have been sold. The sales stats are accurate as of February 8, 2014, and best Sony’s “5 million in 5 months” figure that the company originally forecast.

Last week we learned that Sony's PS4 game console had nearly doubled the sales of the Xbox One in January.

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

"The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans.  February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."

Sony is on a roll with PS4 sales despite the fact that some major markets still don’t yet have access to the console (including Japan).

Now you have taken all the fun out of it. :/

Still, that's alot of consoles. Pretty impressive, especially when you consider how few games are even out yet... That and exceeding goals is always a good thing.

Titanfall!

Just played it this weekend. The beta and alpha seems to have less glitches/bugs than the selling versions of COD and BF4.

It does look fun... That and the guys that formed Respawn are some of the best game devs ever.

It's stupid for there to be more than one car company. They all make vehicles powered by ICEs. It is stupid for there to be both AMD and Intel, they both make X86 chips.

Anyone who thinks that someone who buys what they don't like is a moron is the real moron.

Your arguments against there being an Xbox One are idiotic. It should not exist because it benefits Microsoft? Well, who the hell else would MS want to benefit? Neither MS or Sony are charities. They are there to make profits. MS will sell it at the price the market will bear. If it doesn't sell, they will lower the price. But for now, it is selling plenty at the price they are asking.

Last gen, the PS3 was the more expensive, but it did fine. It had a weak start, but in the end came back to pretty much tie the Xbox 360. In the long run, that $100 price difference will not make or break the console. Exclusives will. The reason Sony had the strong comeback near the end was they had much more exclusives in the last few years. MS dropped the ball. After a year long head start, and completely dominating sales for the next couple years, they fell way behind on first party titles, giving Sony a chance to catch up.

So basically what you're saying is, we should eliminate competition because one of the devices is less useful to you than the other?

You make a number of assumptions about the buyers of these products that only aligns to your own qualities.

I hope everyone stops there lol.

The only reason PS4 or Xbox One didn't cost $999 is because there are 3 consoles.

While I agree with most of the post, I doubt we will see a "proliferation" of 4k TVs in homes any time soon. 1080p content is still just barely getting there. What incentive is there to buy a 4k TV right now?

I am surprised that people are not raising pitchforks against Sony just as much as they are against MS for having yesterday's lack-luster hardware and graphics.
Sony fans tend to be more hardcore than MS fans.

MS fans are fickle and will turn on MS in a second, Sony fans will go down with the ship.

huge liabilities in the way of retirement packages that the company cannot afford and the new generation cannot support (just like most Japanese companies are facing right now).
Most people here don't understand the Japanese retirement system or why a worker will stay with a company for his whole career.

As you mentioned, most companies in Japan will reward that kind of loyalty by paying the cost of a retired employee's retirement from company funds, the employee traditionally has never had to deal with pensions or retirement accounts because of this.

In the last 5 years the Japanese government has started forcing workers over 60 to retire, so they can make way for people coming out of college. This has created many issues for many companies there.

The thing is that Sony is an appliance company, while MS is a software company.
It is the same here in the US with Apple and MS... Apple wants to sell a box, software is treated an an incidental item. MS uses the box to sell software.

LOL, exactly... Sony, for a long time was the most hated tech company out there. Even on this site, back when it was part of Anandtech, and even the early days of Dailytech, if you posted anything at all negative about Sony, or Rambus you were instantly voted up to 5.

That is why it's so amazing to see how even the much hated Sony is grasping the "give the customer what they want" concept while MS has moved to "Give the customer what we want" mentality.

I know allot of people out there that are die hard Sony fans. Sony is better, no matter what.

I personally noticed back in the 80's that Sony was starting to slip. My Japanese friends refer to what they call the "Sony Timer". This feature typically kicks in anywhere from 1 day to 1 week after the warranty is up and requires replacement or repair. Gone are the days of Sony quality.

Replace "sony" in "sony timer" with any brand name you like and you get closer to the truth. Personally (anecdotal evidence, ya I know), I used to buy exclusively sony A/V gear, never had any problems except with a compact surround system which had a case of bad caps in the power supply, so it died after about three and a half years. Replaced those caps and it lasted another eight. Finally replaced that thing with a Sonos surround/sub setup last week because I wanted something nice with good bass punch yet still compact, pretty (and wireless) and I found nothing else that quite fit the bill. My TV is samsung, don't have any portable music players anymore (smartphone + spotify is 100x more powerful in that regard)... Only sony I still own/use is PS4 and PS3.

Still, I love the brand. They do make some great things, still.

There isn't hardware (commercially) available today that will be really competitive in 8 years.

I guess both Sony and MS could have used highest end i7 and whatever graphics rock&roll today, but that would put price tag in completely different league. With consoles, however - backward compatibility usually not being there - you want your console to sell quickly and reach critical mass as soon as possible, because game developers will not be impressed with idea of developing AAA game for console that no one is buying.

Thus the compromise. But in all the honesty, regardless of mediocre hardware... being PS and PC gamer, I'm yet to find arcade adventure game as enjoyable as Uncharted on PS3, Tomb Raider games coming in distant 2nd place. My favourite hack and slash is still God of War series, and most enjoyable driving game is GT6... and I did play (or at least try) most NFSs, Grids, Dirts on PC as well.

Considering where PS4 is compared to PS3 - and considering great games on PS3 - I'm pretty confident PS4 will offer quality gaming for years to come.

There is so much in your post I disagree with that it is hard to list it all. But here is a couple I think needs to be put right.

Sony not being around in five years. I'd be very surprised if you're right about that. Sony Corp. may not be doing great, but they are handling it and cutting away the parts of their business which is hurting them. Plus it is worth remembering that Sony is much more than consoles, TV's and PC's as for examples there is their music business, their movie business, their pro gear for TV/movie production...

It's clear you prefer the 360 over the PS3 and while I agree on some of your points much of it is really a matter of taste. Like for instance I much prefer the PS3 UI and to me the PS3 has simply been a much better system all the way through. Sure there was some bumps on the way, but Sony has handled them well and it seems you forget all the crap there is with the 360, like how not all systems has a hard drive, that hard drives are silly overpriced, that the PS3 will let you use standard accessories instead of overpriced MS things and there the issue with the horrible 360 hardware quality. Finally I think you're wrong about Sony not support their systems. If anything Sony has a history of keeping their systems, including all the supporting around them, alive for the longest time - just look at what Sony did with the PS2 compared and compare that with what Microsoft did with the XBOX. Hint - the PS2 remained in production until January 2013 and there are still coming games for it where as the XBOX was ended early 2009 and the last game for it came out in 2008.

Finally on consoles vs. PC's or for that matter consoles vs. anything else. If you wanna look at the hardware+OS alone then you must do that by keep the price in mind so when doing that you'll see that consoles do bring good performance for what your buy. Can you get more performance for the same money in a couple of years then yes, that has always been so with electronics however consoles are about gaming so the question can you get a better gaming experience on say a tablet than with a console even if the tablet is more powerful. I think the answer is pretty clear except perhaps if you're into casual games in which case you're not in the market for much of what consoles offer anyway (unless you count Nintendo Wii, but who does that anymore).

Sony is doomed to be the Wii of this generation with the better game hardware, and the better price, but with nothing to do on it.

Wii had the inferior hardware of the generation, of course. If you meant to characterize the PS4 as having the better hardware...well yes, but how does that fit this analogy of being "the Wii of this generation"?

Either Sony or MS would be very pleased to be the worldwide console sales winner. Nintendo has its issues with 3rd party devs as we all know, but why would PS4 be in that situation and not in a similar situation as with PS3?

Seems to me things are pretty status quo in that regard, and if anything cross-platform releases have become even more common, making PS4 and 360 on even footing in terms of whether or not there is "something to do on it".

Not going to go into a point by point refutation or anything but I totally disagree that "the end has already come for the mainstream console game industry".

This absurd thesis is not a mere comment on strong PS4 sales, its your attempt to broadcast your contrarian opinion by piggybacking off Shane's blog. Heres a suggestion: Make your own blog and come back to post a link here...then we can downvote it.

"Not going to go into a point by point refutation or anything but I totally disagree that "the end has already come for the mainstream console game industry"."

LOL. Yup, I think Caeden's whole post is kind of myopic and very short sighted. Yes tablets and phones GPU's are catching, up, but the flat screen still sucks for most games. It will simply never work. PC's always have potential, but its still a pain in the arse for most people. Consoles are still where the bulk of gaming devs work and where the bulk of the sales are by a good margin. The very fact that that he posted this in an article stating the PS4 sold over 5 million already (ahead of the planned goal BTW) says it all. It's still huge. Between PS4 and XBO, the console will still own this generation of games... Maybe the next gen will be different, we will have to see.
