Only $50 more to double PS3 Slim's capacity

Sony recently introduced the PlayStation 3 Slim in September. Available in a single 120GB model, it sold very well due to a new $299 price.  The company states that it sold over 1 million PS3 units worldwide in the three weeks following the PS3 Slim launch.

The price cut was made possible by shrinking several components, most notably a 45nm version of the Cell processor. Overall, the PS3 Slim is 32 percent smaller than the original PS3 and consumes 34% less power. The console still loses money for Sony, but the platform as a whole is profitable as game licenses are sold to developers.

Seeking to capitalize on that success in time for the Christmas shopping season, Sony has announced a new PS3 Slim model on the official PlayStation blog. Consumers will be able to purchase a PlayStation 3 Slim with a 250GB hard drive starting November 3. The new model will sport the same internal components as the 120GB model, but will sell for $350.

Sony is counting on several new games to boost sales as well. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Tekken 6, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are some of the highlighted games.

In addition to the PS3's large software library, there are also 2,300 movies available to download from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service. A third of those movies are also available in high-definition.

The best selling console is still the Nintendo Wii, while Microsoft's Xbox 360 still struggles with heat issues leading to console failures.

Sony also recently launched the PSP Go!, which eschews physical media in favor of digital distribution.

...it takes the HD manufacturer essentially the same time and materials (nee cost) to make a 120Gb hard drive as a 250Gb hard drive...

Granted that some different technologies come into play at one point or another, like an extra platter or perpendicular recording, but still...?

You're right. Normally with the latest generations of hard disk: let's say a platter holds 250GB and you can have 1, 2 or 3 (but this increases the drive thickness) platter combinations. You would be able to release 250GB, 500GB and 750GB, but also 120GB, 160GB and 200GB, single platters not fully used and so on.

This is a known and currently in-use practice by manufacturers already. It's is a similar (but not an identical) analogy to processor-speed binning, so the same core is produced but some are down-clocked and sold cheaper (despite being potentially flawless) to fill the market gap, and so hard disk platters may be flawless but have reduced capacity, just to fill the market gap - if you wanted a 120GB drive but could only buy a 250GB one from one manufacturer, you'd just go to another manufacturer.

I believe FFXIII is also coming out for the 360, at least in the US.

FFXIII is going to be a timed exclusive. So it can come out a day later or a year later after the PS3 release. No one knows at this time, cept Square Enix and I doubt they even know.

MW2 will give it a boost for sure, whether you like the game or not.

Yeah Modern Warfare 2 will move allot of Playstation 3's and Xbox 360's - That game is massively hyped, and many gamers are foaming at the teeth waiting for that one.

Personally, I'm hoping the campaign lasts for more than 4 hours, which was the biggest let down with Modern Warfare 2 for me.

yea MW2 will move

I was originally going for it on PC but with the split screen co-op on it I decided to come back to PS3 for it (the only reason to own a console to me is for multiple people to play together on one system like Warhawk or Halo 3)

PS: but of course we cant ignore those fun single player games (Uncharted)

yep, love CoD on PC as well. I hope it does move on PS3 lol but didn't CoD2 deter some fans away, kinda like Battlefield?

I thought Battlefield was still going strong? I immensely enjoyed Battlefield 1943 on the Xbox Live! Arcade.

I think the real gem to look out for is Perfect Dark, remade with Xbox Live! multi-layer, updated graphics etc'. - for me that will be the return of the glory days.

Regarding the Call of Duty franchise, I actually hated Call of Duty 1, 2 and 3, Call of Duty 4 was awesome, and World at War was alright, but I didn't like the fact it seemed to -me- that it was CoD4 in a new skin.

No, EA screw the players pretty badly with patches/mod and what not the last time around. I've enjoyed the first immensely but stayed away from the sequels.

I loved CoD1 and so did my nephews. It was just too short but story was engaging for us. Same for FarCry. However, the sequels just didn't look that great so none of us gave it a short :/

Uncharted 2 has a pretty addicting multiplayer mode. Not sure if it can be split-screened, but I tried out the beta and it was really fun. Fry's has it on sale for 49.99 this weekend so I'll pick it up.

Guess you have never played the original "Uncharted"? That game was a surprise out of nowhere, it was really good.
The COD series has always been popular as well as Tekken.
Ratchet and Clank is popular with the younger crowd.

I personally prefer playing COD series on a PC though. Much better multiplayer experience than any console (PS3 or 360) provides. Getting on a dedicated server with 40+ players on one map is awesome!

I have, I just happen to think these games are "niche" rather then mainstream. The previous versions of the games listed didn't do so well as far as I can remember. CoD didn't, Tekken didn't, Rachet I'm very positive didn't, Uncharted didn't. Sure they're good games but their numbers weren't that great, but things could change with the new versions.

Now with Gran Turismo, you have a fan base of millions...die hard fans that will buy the game :) That's a sure seller in my book, but sadly ain't going to happen for the holidays.

Regardless (not irregardless!!) I think PS3 sales is going to jump due to a few selected games coming out. Some closer than others. I'm looking forward to GT and FFXIV personally, so that's next year for me to get a PS3 at the earliest. Nephews bought PS3s because of the hype Madden2010 has. Not to mention being slimmer is more attractive to people like me. Now it's more of a console size hahahaha

Er.. CoD: MW sold way over 10 million units. IIRC, it's closer to 12-13 million. It still sells well even today, nearly two years since release. That's not niche.

(10 million units sold by June 2008)

The newest Final Fantasy is coming out on the Xbox 360 as well as the Playstation 3.

In my opinion there are only several good games that are PS3 exclusives - MGS 4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Infamous, and Resistance 2. Five games isn't enough to make me buy a PS3 in addition to my 360.

Losing Final Fantasy as an exclusive was a big blow... for that game I may have bought a PS3.

IMO, Valkyria Chronicles has been the best game released on the newest gen systems. Although I'm a huge fan of strategy rpg, so that probably has something to do w/ it.

Second place would probably be Fable II or Mass Effect...

Joan D'Arc was also really good, but that's a PSP game.

Your list is missing a bunch of titles. Here is a couple just to get started:

Uncharted (Yes, the first one is also a great game)
Little Big Planet (Just try looking it up on youtube)
Wipeout HD - not for everyone but it is great fun.
Ratchet & Clank (all of them)
Motorstorm
Singstar

+ there are some very interesting smaller games like fx. Echochrome and Flowers

I have both the PS3 and a 360 and I must say that in general I find the games on PS3 more interesting. Not that there aren't great 360 games but many of them are also PC games (meaning cheaper, with mods and better graphics). The PS3 took some time getting there but lately there are tons of great games. Plus it is a Blu Ray player (and it is not damn loud as my 360).

That's highly personal preference of course, I like the Xbox 360 because the games entertain me more.

And for the record, the Noisy DVD drive is no longer an issue, Install your games to the Hard Disk Drive and be done with.

I'm also not keen on Blue-ray, as I find that it's just another way for companies to get me to purchase the same movie again, I moved to Media Streaming a long time ago...

Little Big Planet is the only game I would contemplate getting out of that entire list, but to me it seems more like an Xbox Live Arcade game. (I haven't played it yet, to find out how much depth it has).

Last things first :-)

LBP is much more than a Live Arcade thing. I am so amazed at what people create with it plus the whole physics thing simply feels right.

Blu-ray. I guess it depends on were you live. In Europe on-line services are not that available (The many languages and national laws make it a complex market compared to the US) so movie rental in physical form is still big. Also one can buy new movies not just old ones.

Finally as for the noisy DVD drive on the 360. Yes, you can install games but I'd rather not. My 20 GB is full and a 120 GB disk cost something like $180 in this part of the world. I guess you can call it a personal preference but for that money I can buy a 250 GB drive for my PS3 and a couple of games :-)

It's obvious you have never watched a movie in 1080p with lossless sound.

There are plenty of crappy BR movies with poor video quality and god awful sound. It depend how one converts it to high-def.

You make it sound as if any of the other consoles being sold don't do the exact same thing.

I realize it's a pretty easy thing to do, change the HD in the PS3 (I've upgraded mine to 320GB), but not everyone wants to. They simply don't care to learn or be bothered to order a drive separately and install it.

Yes, handling bare hard drives isn't for everyone. The average joe thinks bigger numbers are better, and here Sony has more than doubled that number, must look good to most.

Don't forget that whilst us folk who post on techie sites are happy to and capable of opening up the PS3 and replacing the hard drive, a good majority of customers wouldn't have a clue or couldn't be bothered with the effort.

For them its much easier to just buy a PS3 with the larger drive already in it. The extra 120Gb drive would just be a paperweight for such people.

RE: fail price
By Murst on 10/16/2009 5:50:25 PM , Rating: 2
A 120GB drive would end up being a paperweight for most people, including "ones who post on techie sites".

This seems like a pretty decent deal. If I was buying a PS3 and wanted a 250GB drive, I'd rather pay the extra $50 and have it come w/ the machine. A spare 120GB drive isn't worth the hassle of having to install the drive and then install the OS.

yup,
I'm living proof. I did that with my 60gb unit... put my laptop 120gig in the ps3 then put the 60 gig in my laptop (needed space more on the ps3 than the lappy)

The drive that ships with the PS3 can be used on a notebook or any other device, the only issue is that the device spins at 3200rpm compared to the faster notebook drives, upgraded mine to a 320 WD Black 7200rpm, and damn the PS3 just loads so much faster...The PS3 is not that big yet in South Africa, but the xbox is, but when it comes to online gaming, the PS3 outperforms the xbox due to sony having local servers and microsoft none

They DID sweeten the deal. Before, it use to be $100 difference more an extra 80GB. Now its $50 for 130GB more. I think YOU need to wake up.

Where the hell did you get $50 for 250GB 2.5" Sata drive? Show me, as it seems I can't find one on the egg! I think the price is reasonable and Sony will sure have some game bundle that'll be selling at that same price $350.
