The video game industry is turning in some impressive profits and continuing to operate with little impact caused by the poor global economy. The next generation consoles like the Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 grab most of the headlines, but the older Sony PS2 is still doing well in the marketplace.
Sony announced today that the PS2 would see a price reduction bringing the MSRP to $99. This is the first time that the PS2 has been offered for under $100. In January, Sony announced that the PS2 had sold more than 50 million units in North America.
Sony's director of hardware marketing John Koller wrote on the PlayStation blog:
Why is this so significant? Well most importantly, this new price means that more people than ever will be able to join in on the fun that so many of you PlayStation 2 owners have been enjoying for years, which means new families will become part of the platform’s record-breaking install base. With this new price, we intend to introduce a new generation of consumers – some of whom weren’t even alive when the system was first introduced in 2000 – to the immense entertainment value offered by PlayStation 2.
Koller goes on to say that the reason the PS2 has sold so well and has such a massive user base is that Sony put great technology and features into the console from the beginning. Sony says that the game library for the PS2 will reach close to 1,900 titles including the first-party studio games and publishing partner titles this year.
The focus for new titles for the console will be on sports and social games according to Sony, which are the most popular genres with the emerging family demographic. Since the launch of the PS2 2, 50 titles have achieved "Greatest Hits" status and that number will continue to grow.
