Access worldwide news from your PlayStation 3

On September 18, Sony Computer Entertainment launched Life with PlayStation worldwide. Life with PlayStation is a new service that provides channels incorporating various types of content that will be accessible using a PlayStation 3. The main channel currently available is “Live Channel” which provides worldwide news and weather information on a city by city basis. This is accomplished using a world map interface.

What makes “Live Channel” different from any other news service is the world map interface. The interface is literally a globe that you have the ability to manipulate freely moving from city to city depending on which city's news you want to see. This feature is demonstrated well in a video uploaded to viddler. The information is provided live from the internet and allows you to listen to music as you cruise through the news feeds for each city.

Weather information is provided by The Weather Channel, news headlines are provided by Google News, and live camera images are partially provided by The Earth Television Network covering nearly 60 cities around the globe. This content package will be free of charge.

The only other channel currently available on Life with PlayStation is the Folding@home channel. This channel allows you to view a protein-folding simulation in real time.

Although what is currently offered is limited in the future Life with PlayStation may become another tool for delivering content to your home via your PlayStation 3.

Might as well. Everyone who bought a Wii stopped playing it 2 months after owning it. Might as well just integrate it's features into the PS3 or 360.

That's not true in the home of anyone I know that owns a wii including my own.

Just a little further info:
You will need to get system update 2.43 then run Folding@Home in order for it to update as well. After the update F@H will become the new Life program

Not true. I'm running it perfectly fine with the 2.42 firmware. From what Sony said, 2.43 is only necessary for Japan.

Is F@H a screen saver YET!
By SiliconJon on 9/22/2008 2:02:19 PM , Rating: 2
Why did they just make it one step longer to launch F@H. I wanted it to be one step less, so when those little mini-me's leave the PS3 on it will auto-start F@H, not make it that much more "difficult" for their little Ultra-Mega-Super ADHD (aka normal child) brians to take the time to put it there...

Life & F@H run simultaneously. If you want it to kick on as a screensaver all you have to do is hit Triangle for options while you have it selected on the XMB.
Once Life is running hold down Square and select F@H to watch its version of the globe.

The Auto-start functionality has been there for a while. You should be sure of something's absence before you complain about it. Also, what mles1551 said.

It's still pretty premature at this point. It doesn't give you a forecast for future weather and doesn't include enough cities. I'd give it some time before being as cool as the Wii's Weather and News Channel.

Wii already did it.

.. and before Wii, there was Google earth, and before that the internet browser.

It's nice I guess for PS3 owners to doodle with, hopefully you'll get more integration with location based youtube/wikipedia/internet information.

Indeed, is the above PR where it says "what makes it different from any other new service.." from Sony, or is this just an ignorant DT writer?
The Wii has had the globe you can spin and get news or weather from cities all over the world for a long time.

Thanks Sony!

Now I will only ever use my Wii for parties. Which I never have because I barely have any friends.

I don't know how everyone else uses their game systems, but mine is already plugged into a TV...
