You can wear it on your wrist and pretend to shoot lasers at the robots in your head

Are you sick of carrying your smartphone around with you everywhere you go? Do you want to stay connected in the bathroom, without risking your smartphone's life? Do you wish you could see that incoming text message and check all your friends' status updates without leaving the couch? Sony Ericsson now has an answer to all your troubles -- if you have a select Android-based device, that is.

The Sony Ericsson LiveView is basically a remote control for Android-based smartphones. It connects to the devices via Bluetooth, and can be clipped to your belt or worn around your wrist like a watch. From there, you can read incoming SMS messages and RSS feeds, check Twitter and Facebook status updates, listen to your music library, and download apps directly from the Android market to the LiveView.

The LiveView weighs just 15 grams and sports a 1.3" color OLED display, a power hardkey, a select hardkey, and four navigational softkeys. It displays caller ID information for incoming calls and allows you to remotely silence the ringer when you don't feel like talking to grandma. It also has a "find your phone" function, when your forgetfulness kicks in.

As far as compatibility, LiveView has support for the Sony Ericsson X10 line-up, including the Mini and Mini Pro, as well as all Galaxy S devices and the HTC Desire. At least those are the devices listed on the LiveView website. According to the compatibility chart on the spec sheet, LiveView should be compatible with any Android device that is running 2.0 or greater, as long as Sony Ericsson LiveWare Manager -- available on the Android market -- is installed on the device.

No pricing has been announced yet, but the LiveView should be available some time in Q4. IntoMobile has a video of the LiveView in action.

Wristphones!

That's stunningly useful to people in meetings, anyone tired of fishing the phone out of pockets/purses/whatever, those who ride motorcycles, or anyone else not in a situation where they can leisurely pull out the phone and peruse it.

OTOH this all depends on it being actually compatible with all Android phones when released. If it somehow manages to get released as a Sony-only device, it'll bury itself.

That would be epic fail if that was the case, but I doubt that is the case.

Second to Apple, Sony is the Queen of proprietorship. Don't put it past them.

-Look for root kits being installed on your android phone as well... /endsonyresentment

One better: Ringphones!

Of course, that was supposed to be released 9 months ago now and there hasn't been a peep out of them since their initial press release. But hey, it's still a cool idea.

iPod Nano 7th gen?
By nafhan on 9/28/2010 9:29:36 AM , Rating: 2
I'm thinking it would be pretty cool if Apple could figure out how to do this with the next (or current) iPod Nano. The 7th gen Nano could function both as an auxilary watch/clip on display for the iPhone and as a standalone MP3 player. It would certainly be a good way to make use of that screen!

An iPhone is an iPod with a phone attached.

Why would you want both?

No good on my wrist
By Visual on 9/29/2010 8:28:02 AM , Rating: 2
... but if I can plug any standard 3rd-party headphones in it and wear it like a lanyard, it would make a great upgrade for my BH-903 headset.
It has to last at least as long on a charge though - over 9 hours of playback over bluetooth. Bonus points if it can charge with any micro-usb cable and even my galaxy-s charger.
Even better if it's able to function autonomously, having my songs stored on it directly, and waste my phone's battery for bluetooth radio only while i'm in a call.
And it is high time they stop wasting battery life on backlit displays that are too unreadable outdoors anyway. Make it use some economic e-ink variant, it doesn't need fast refresh rate anyway. Add a light to it for use in the dark only, preferably auto-controlled by a sensor.
I doubt it will be anything like that though. That would actually require some common sense from the manufacturers, and we can't have that...

One correction, it's "uncommon sense ".

Now who is going to make the Predator I'm a sore loser exploding wrist gizmo countdown app for it?
