It’s no secret now that Sony Ericsson is interested in crafting
a PlayStation-branded phone. But before the GSM-phone company goes ahead
with a full-fledged platform that taps into Sony Computer Entertainment’s
brand, it may test the waters first with a gaming-centric phone that won’t pair
up with any console.
According to Mobile
Entertainment, Sony Ericsson will unveil in February a phone that
offers “a games-oriented user interface and styling, and comprise technical
innovations such as motion-sensitivity, which will pave the way for Wii-like
gameplay on a handset.”
Last month, Sony Ericsson’s gaming guru Peter Ahnegard said,
“Gaming is probably the most mature content area we have today in mobile phone
and Sony Ericsson has always reflected that, having games embedded on our
handsets for many years.”
“The power of the phones we're creating now is phenomenal,”
added Ahnegard. “Smartphones like the W960, P1 and associated families have
hardware acceleration and OpenGL ES and are capable of providing gaming
experiences on a level similar to PSP, certainly somewhere between PS1 and PS2.”
While mobile phones these days are taking over the duties of
the casual digital camera and portable music player, gaming on-the-go is an
area largely dominated by handhelds like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.
Nokia first attempted to integrate gaming into its phones
with the N-Gage, which was met with less than desired success. The Finnish
phone company is giving
it another go this November, this time focussing on software rather than
hardware.
If Sony Ericsson launches a gaming phone that is met with
enough success, Sony Computer Entertainment could be better convinced of
putting its brand on a new mobile gaming product.
