Sony Ericsson may be cooking up a gaming phone, but it won't be PlayStation-branded just yet

It’s no secret now that Sony Ericsson is interested in crafting a PlayStation-branded phone. But before the GSM-phone company goes ahead with a full-fledged platform that taps into Sony Computer Entertainment’s brand, it may test the waters first with a gaming-centric phone that won’t pair up with any console.

According to Mobile Entertainment, Sony Ericsson will unveil in February a phone that offers “a games-oriented user interface and styling, and comprise technical innovations such as motion-sensitivity, which will pave the way for Wii-like gameplay on a handset.”

Last month, Sony Ericsson’s gaming guru Peter Ahnegard said, “Gaming is probably the most mature content area we have today in mobile phone and Sony Ericsson has always reflected that, having games embedded on our handsets for many years.”

“The power of the phones we're creating now is phenomenal,” added Ahnegard. “Smartphones like the W960, P1 and associated families have hardware acceleration and OpenGL ES and are capable of providing gaming experiences on a level similar to PSP, certainly somewhere between PS1 and PS2.”

While mobile phones these days are taking over the duties of the casual digital camera and portable music player, gaming on-the-go is an area largely dominated by handhelds like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.

Nokia first attempted to integrate gaming into its phones with the N-Gage, which was met with less than desired success. The Finnish phone company is giving it another go this November, this time focussing on software rather than hardware.

If Sony Ericsson launches a gaming phone that is met with enough success, Sony Computer Entertainment could be better convinced of putting its brand on a new mobile gaming product.

Somewhat... They're not labeling it as a PlayStation because they're worried if it flopped it would hurt the franchise's reputation.

The PS3 hasn't hurt the reputation, its not a flop or a bad console, its just too damn expensive. As soon as they can make it cheap enough (probably another year minimum) it'll be a more reasonable $300 or so. Look how much the PS2 has dropped since introduction, and there was still demand for that all along.

There isn't much demand now for the PS3 because its stupid expensive.

The PSP should have been a phone in the first place and not have had a UMD drive. Have all the PS2/PS3 controls on it, give it b/g wireless and bluetooth and a slide out keyboard (or touch if you want to risk it). Don't bound people with one phone company and throw in a 30 GB HDD so instead of buying games on a physical disc, people can just download it (its like 1.8 GB on a disc this would have been extremely easy to do)

how about the concept of psp games coming on dvd but requires the ps2/ps3 to upload them to your psp phone?

Barring that, a pc could also be used to upload games.

Would this be too open to hacking and just be a general pain in the ass to implement?

Great deal

Err... so, what, then? The people who purchase this phone will essentially be paying beta-testers? If and when this is recognized as lucrative direction in which to take the Playstation brand, the real, fully-featured phone will be released?

In a sense. Just like most early adopters. You get to play with something before others, but you know that there'd be something that's better value for money coming.

I'd wait and see how much this thing costs. I own an N-Gage, and one reason I bought it was that it cost $200 unlocked, which was a very good price for a phone of its features. And I did enjoy it as a gaming phone. So I'm certainly open to a similar deal, even if in the long run something better will come out.

Gaming Phone?

Nintendo sees the market and makes one cheaper and better. DS Lite phone anyone?

Maybe...

They should call it "phonestation".

The most basic integrated game would be that one in which you have to answer phone calls to get bonus points, and you get a 1/3 battery drain every time you loose a call.

The reward for winning would be a phonescreen sized strip tease animation of a woman wearing a blue Sony suit and a Sony branded bluetooth headset.
Once the animation shows the girl completely naked, a scream of "Wiiii" would come out of the phone.

Yes, I'd definitely buy something like that. I need more incoherent tech stuff in my life, as technology has become too serious already.
