8GB of Memory Stick PRO Duo
Double the space for double the fun

All the Sony proprietary aficionados out there will be pleased to learn that the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo is on display at CES. This news will likely be of great interest to those with Sony Cyber-shots and PSPs, as for devices such as those, no amount of memory ever seems to be enough. Furthermore, beginning this year, a Memory Stick slot will also be standard on all new 2007 Handycam camcorder models.

“The life of the Memory Stick format spans from the dawning of the digital camera to the emergence of today’s high-definition video and gaming products,” said Mike Kahn, senior manager for Memory Stick Media at Sony Electronics. “Throughout all of these advances in the consumer electronics industry, Memory Stick media has remained a constant source of compact and portable flash memory.”

According to Kahn, the 8GB MSX-M8GS Memory Stick model will store approximately 1,500 images in 10-megapixel, fine mode; more than 18 hours of video at 768Kb per seconds in MPEG4 compression; and can hold a collection about 2,000 songs in the MP3 format at 128 kbps with an average of four minutes per song.

Those who want all the added space on a single card will have to pay top dollar – the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media card will be available in February for about $300. For reference, 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo cards can be had today for under $100.

I have uses for this thing, but $300? I can have six gig for that insane price. Someone make a cheaper version of an 8 gig pro duo, please. I'm looking at you, SanDisk.

Did I say six? I meant twelve gig. I could afford twelve gig (4x3). Sorry for that mind slip.

Buy a hundred old surplus 256MB sticks and you can have 25 GB for even less than that. But then, that's not exactly the same thing now is it? You pay a premium for the higher capacity...for those who need it, its worth it.

Good point. Generally though I do not like carrying more than 4 memory sticks at a time, hence the reason why the 4 GB sticks are still better for me, and eight 2 GBs are not. I can not imagine lugging hundreds of 256 MB sticks. It would just be awful.

Agreed. Why would anybody buy anything that uses Memory Stick? You can get 8G CF for about $100 at newegg. Didn't see any SD, but 4G SD is about $50.

Since it's propritary, Sony can use the format to jouge/rob/extort it's customers for more money.

I am a sony customer (ericsson, psp, digicam), and this is how i feel. Like a fool.

If you go to www.pricegrabber.com, you'll find an SD 8GB for around 100+ dollars.

Is it really THAT alienated of a format? I mean, cameras use them, digital cameras use them, HD cameras use them, laptops use them, PSPs use them, PS3's use them, and its pretty much the same with SD (except its DS and Wii). Yes it costs more, but I think that the same number of products that use Memory stick use Secure Digital.

I think you mean Sony products use them.

Did anyone else find this amusing?

Remained a constant source? Of what? Cost?

I bet that the PSP HD can reach more than 8gb for less $, before someone buys this $300 card....

the HD of 4gb runs for around $99, same as stupid card, but it been out since PSP came out, so no big deal... (but this is just psp talk).
at least i don't have to worry that munch about memory cards.
