Deep Red PSP to come with the God of War
80GB PlayStation 3 to return with Metal Gear Solid 4, DualShock 3 included

Sony Computer Entertainment America today revealed at Destination PlayStation, its annual retail and publisher conference, several new hardware items for spring and summer.

North American gamers envious of their Japanese counterparts who have been able to buy the DualShock 3, which returns vibration force feedback to the PlayStation 3 controller, since last year will soon be finally getting a local option.

The DualShock 3 will hit North American stores on April 15 at an MSRP of 54.99, or $5 more than the current SIXAXIS controller. While Japan has both white and black DualShock 3 models, SCEA has not revealed which shades in which it will launch the controllers. Launching alongside the DualShock 3 will also be Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which fully supports force feedback controllers and wheels.

Although retailer information points to the 80GB PlayStation 3 as discontinued, Sony doesn’t seem to be done with it yet. SCEA also announced that it will create a new system bundle upon the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, which will include the feverishly anticipated title and a DualShock 3 controller. The new 80GB pack is expected in late Q2 2008, and will retail for $499.

“Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal way to offer that continued value to our consumers,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.

SCEA confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will indeed hit a worldwide release in the second quarter of this year, which will also launch with a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.” Furthermore, those who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4 will be “guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.”

In the last bit of hardware news, SCEA will release in June a special edition “Deep Red” PSP model which will be packed with God of War: Chains of Olympus, the film Superbad on UMD and a voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the PlayStation Store. Just as the Star Wars “Ceramic White” PSP-2000 was silk screened with an image of Darth Vader on the back, the “Deep Red” PSP will come branded with Kratos – the protagonist from the God of War series. God of War: Chains of Olympus will launch on its own on March 4.

Tretton also took the opportunity to slip in a mild nod to Blu-ray Disc’s recent victory, no doubt helped in part by the PlayStation 3. “With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall,” he said.

Not for anything in particular, but i wouldn't like to hang around in public with my LIPSTICK RED psp... it's so girlish gay!

And I don't think it's "Gayish" - I thought that colour was reserved for Fuschia?

The color is a bit garish IMHO, but then again, I am the owner of a pastel blue PSP from Japan.

Anyway, God of War is AMAZING on the PSP, and including the funniest movie of last year isnt a bad move either. Personally, it is the best pack-in yet for PSP.

Now about that FF7: Crisis Core edition that Japan got...

I think both bundles will surely bring in more buyers. Medal Gear is a highly anticipated game and if you can get that plus a PS3, plus a dualshock-sixaxis, then you are in a win-win-win situation.

I know I am thinking about getting a PSP for the SKYPE feature as majority of places I go have wifi so I could use it as a secondary cell phone when I run out of minutes. =)

It's just marketing BS warmed over to get people to consume, consume, consume. Why else would men wear pink, women wear all sorts of uncomfortable things, and kids (parents) pay for new clothes that already look worn out? The thought is implanted that such things are "cool" or "in-style" or "what the rebels wear." That way people rush out to buy it to make a statement of how individual they are or how they live in the now. How many people are going to throw out their perfectly fine black PSP so they can get a red one? The number could be alarming.

Seriously I hate Camron for making Pink the "gangster" color. In some countries color does not have a gender association but we live in America so if you wear pink, purple, are any other 'light' color then most likely its considered a 'girls color'.

I disagree with this reasoning but sadly it is implanted in me strongly, as I wear mostly blue, grey, black, and on occasion green. I think Red is the only true multi-gender-color in America.

Also, yeah, that's not really a pink. Though it looks either badly done, or a bad photochop, how they painted the metal ring around the PSP logo.

Don't talk such utter nonsense, its just a colour like any other! I'm proud to say that I wear any colour which I want including pink. Pink on men is hot because its tan-enhancing. I've noticed in the last 5 years that everybody now wears pink (in the UK) and its no longer a gay declaration (although wearing a rainbow coloured shirt is) Role on progress. Having said that, would I buy a pink phone? Probably not, they all look cheap, but to each their own. Kudos to your son for not subscribing to boring convention.

In addition to MS charging $49.99...

Wii Remote Controller: $39.99
Wii Nunchuk: $19.99
Wii Classic Controller: $19.99

So the Wii stands in at $79.97 for the full controller experience. ($59.98 if you don't count the classic controller)

Sony's priced in the middle. (Lousy still, IMO. I long for the days of two controllers coming with the system. Being nickled and dimed on these accessories nowadays is killer.)

Sony's priced in the middle.

But you still have to purchase the battery for the 360 wireless controller, putting it up to $61.98 total, so, for an apples-to-apples comparison, it's slightly more expensive than the Wii/Nunchuck combination.

Doesn't change the fact that they're still ghastly in terms of price, but I've been eyeing a Logitech PS3 controller for $30 that looks pretty nice...

RE: No word of trade in?
By Spivonious on 2/27/2008 10:48:13 AM , Rating: 2
There's no need to buy the classic controller unless you're playing N64 games on the Virtual Console and didn't already have a Gamecube controller. Every other system lets you use the remote.

Lots of Wii games only use the remote, so there's another $20 to knock off. The games that do use the nunchuck are usually only one player anyway (Zelda, Metroid, etc.)

I do agree that two controllers should have come with the Wii, especially coupled with the fact that most of their games are designed around multiplayer, but at least the Wii came with a game. I remember the Sega Master System came with two controllers, a light gun, and two games. That was before companies realized they could subsidize the cost of the system with accessories.

The real crime is the Guitar Hero people charging $55 for what is essentially an empty plastic shell for the remote to go into.

GTA IV isn't a PS3 exclusive.

By Bigjee on 2/28/2008 6:37:44 PM , Rating: 2
My point exactly. You make bundles on your consoles exclusive titles. People who own a 360 will simple buy the 360 version of GTA4. Games like halo 3 for MS and MGS4 for Sony are the ones that people will buy the console for.

GTA 4 is not PS3 exclusive, and depending on who you talk to, MGS4 is a bigger release.

By GhandiInstinct on 2/27/2008 12:23:27 PM , Rating: 2
Depending on who you talk to? How about we talk to statistical facts? GTA is the best selling franchise in gaming history. And it will destroy gaming sales this year and probably beat out Halo in the LONG RUN.

It's a system seller more than any other game and MSG4 is a fraction of the GTA franchise.

By Bigjee on 2/28/2008 6:42:54 PM , Rating: 2
Yes it maybe a fraction but the discussion here is that whether GTA 4 or MGS4 was a better option for sellnig as a PS3 bundle. GTA 4 is being released on 4 platforms , MGS4 is an exclusive.

And for that exact reason its not a system sellers. Exclusives are multiple platform franchises; ports not as much.

Definitely could be the case, but I wouldn't call it a safe assumption.

By MaestroQuark on 2/26/2008 5:32:09 PM , Rating: 2
That's my guess because Sony's been pretty consistent about talking about different SKUs only by mentioning the hard drive size. Check out their backwards compatibility list. It just shows "60 GB" and "80 GB".

For them to have an 80 GB SKU with different capabilities would require a complete redo of even simple information websites.

By saiga6360 on 2/26/2008 8:51:10 PM , Rating: 2
I'm guessing they are doing this to kill 2 birds with one stone, sell off the 80 GB SKUs in a attractive new bundle but in limited quantities since they are no longer making them. Does that make any sense? :) Getting rid of an 'older' SKU by actually selling them off... I gotta admit that is brilliant.

By Ard on 2/26/2008 6:50:33 PM , Rating: 2
Yes. The 80GB MGS4 bundle will have the same backwards compatibility as the current 80GB SKU. It was confirmed on the PlayStation Blog.

By deeznuts on 2/26/2008 5:21:06 PM , Rating: 1
This argument is so tired.

Btw., Rumble is last gen. Rumble with tilt control (sixaxis) is this gen. Get it? Sony, technically, wasn't lying ... about that.

Rumble is last gen. Rumble with tilt control (sixaxis) is this gen. Get it? Sony, technically, wasn't lying ... about that.

As a new owner of PS3 ( for movies ) and a gamer on 360.. its nice to know they finally got rumble back... but adding tilt to the controller makes Rumble - still rumble. The tilt is another gimicky feature that can be added for to a controller for about a dollar with parts from radio shack. Its use will be determined by developers, but I doubt it'll be used much.

You said they didn't lie - well call it what you want - Considering the original PS3 controller I have with mine have Super Nintendo ( no rumble ) last GEN times 2 - they could hardly call rumble last Gen.

Take a deep breath and just admit the truth - The "Last Gen" comment was a Public relations statement made by Sony during the lawsuit with Immersion - which Sony lost ( So did MS ) - and no rumble could legally be used on PS3. Sony decided to resist at 1st before paying... MS just payed as soon as they lost to keep rumble on 360.

By AlphaVirus on 2/26/2008 5:53:11 PM , Rating: 2
Unless you are a 1st grade kid then you have no reason to be confused with the "revisions". Lets see if you can follow
WOW! You did it!

And anyways if you go to the store, you can only get 40 and 80 so what is the big fuss?

As far as dualshock, they got in a legal bind so that is why they did not include it along the entire PS3 days.

By MrX8503 on 2/27/2008 3:19:23 AM , Rating: 2
Um thats quite a bit of revisions for the PS3 only being a little over a year old.

I understand that they were in a legal bind over rumble, but calling it last gen just to cover their butt was stupid. Especially when they decided to add it later for the dual shock 3.Now current PS3 owners who wanted rumble are SOL.

By Torched on 2/27/2008 9:36:04 AM , Rating: 2
Not SOL.... $hit Out of $55. At least its cheaper than wiimote + nunchuk.

As for the revisions, everyone was complaining that the PS3 was too expensive. They create two new SKUs that are cheaper and everyone complains that there are too many revisions. Anything Sony does this generation with hardware will not be enough to make people forget the arrogance they had early on.

IMO, they should release a regular 80GB PS3 with DualShock 3, so soccer parents won't go wild when they notice that spoiled little Timmy's new PS3 came with a game that contains "strong violence, sexual themes, strong language". Although it could be that little Timmy is hardly most of PS3's audience, I'm not sure.

Xbox 360 Core, Premium, Elite, Core with HDMI, Premium with HDMI, Arcade... that's six. The PS3 has had four in North America. So to answer your question, yes. No, I'm not Xbox bashing. The problem with the PS3 is the four SKUs are quite different from each other. Having more than one or two SKUs for a console is only something that has really been introduced this generation. I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing but I think it definitely confuses consumers.

I'll also add that MS chose to separate many accessories and charge for netplay, which is a way to profit. The average consumer will only really question the base-price. Once you have him owning the system and locked into it, you can sell all those things you chose not to reflect in the base price such as a high-def movie player, a hard drive (in some models), as accessories with much higher markups you could get away with by including them with the system. Obviously, MS engages in this far more than Sony does, and as a result Sony offers these "premium" SKUs with conveniently larger hard drives and bundled games which may not logically make sense to some people, but is an attractive way for Sony to make money without running into the problems of:

a. developers not using the hard drive because you made a model which didn't have one.
b. dirt slow hi-def adoption, drive noise, and long-term game capacity issues.

c. serious hardware issues that can cause shortage in supply which in turn causes less sales of games/consoles and frustrated consumers which also in turn can cause fewer sales of games in the future

d. price being more of an issue now that the main HD competition is catching up both in rate of sales and in price point. Seriously PS3 has Blu ray and b/g wireless and its only 50 bucks more than the 360. They really need to reach that golden 199/299/399 price point and soon.

Here's a list of the 360 accessories. Seldom few of these are somewhat reasonably priced and its little wonder how they compensated the manufacturing costs versus the sales in the beginning:

Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on: $49.99
802.11 a/b/g wireless card: $99.99
120GB HDD: $179.99
20GB HDD: $99.99
512 MB flash card: $49.99 wtf
64 MB flash card: $39.99 WTF?!
HDMI cable with optical/RCA out: $49.99
Component cables: $39.99
VGA cables: $39.99
S-video cables: $19.99
Quick charge kit: $29.99
Wired Headset: $19.99
Wired controller: $39.99
Play and charge kit: $19.99
Rechargeable battery: $11.99
Universal Media Remote: $19.99
Wireless controller: $49.99
Wireless headset: $59.99
Keyboard attachment: $29.99
Racing wheel: $99.99
Xbox web camera: $39.99

How dare you point out how badly MS has been shafting their consumer base. You're not supposed to mention these things here. I must vote you down for this as it is the DailyTech way of doing things.

Agreed, I don't think you finished drinking your MS KoolAde, disregard the fact that all the accessories are optional (or now discontinued...HAWHAW) and the console is unable to cool itself properly. If the cooling fans span as fast as the as the drive though, you wouldn't be able to hear the games, so maybe that's their thinking.

Don't make the error bringing up accessory prices at their launch date.
For example, the wireless card has become way cheaper than the $99 you mention! And its far below $89 for a year or so...

Yes and how many of those accessories are actually needed to play games....oh right none.

And lets see on some of those accessories. For Elite it comes with the HDMI cable. For Premium it comes with component cables. The only people who need to buy a hard drive are those who originally were retarded and bought the Core system. The Elite comes with the headset.

And Sony's list of accessories is just as long sans the hard drive, battery, wireless, and HD-DVD drive. And their "PS3" HDMI cable is double the cost of Microsoft's 360 one. Nor do you have to use either.

I'll admit not putting a hard drive in the base 360 was the biggest mistake Microsoft made this generation. One I'm sure they'll correct in the next generation. And I'm definitely looking forward to games that utilize it. The only accessories I've bought are a Play and Charge kit and the media remote (which is a great value at $20).

I still wonder why MS did not do similar to Sony's idea, just plug it up to the USB port to charge. Its simple and it already comes with all models. The play and charge kit is a gimmck =X

media remote (which is a great value at $20).

I have been saying I am going to purchase a PS3 remote but everytime I am in the store I forget. Its much more convienent to have a remote rather than pressing on a gaming controller.

List of Playstation 3 accessories:

Playstation Eye: $39.99
SIXAXIS controller: $49.99
Remote Control: $24.99
HDMI Cable + USB 2.0 Cable Pack(10 ft): $79.99
HDMI Cable: $59.99 (clearly not double)
Component Cable + USB 2.0 (10 ft): $69.99 (WTF?!)
Component Cable: $19.99
S-Video Cable: $19.99
Composite Cable: $9.99
Optical Cable (10 ft): $29.99
USB Cable (10 ft): $19.99
Memory Card Adapter: $14.99

And I also said that there are seldom few accessories on the 360 that are priced somewhat fairly. I should specify which ones:

Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on: $49.99
Universal Media Remote: $19.99
Racing wheel: $99.99 (fair because its wireless)
Xbox web camera: $39.99

Other than that, the 360 (and the PS3, seriously 20 bucks for a USB cable? And get rid of that component-USB combo its pointless!) really needs to stop ripping people off on their prices. Also the PS3 is much more open when it comes to accessories. You can plug in ANY keyboard, mouse, headset, hard drive (external or internal), flash drive, web camera and racing wheel thats out there so long as its USB capable or Bluetooth capable. You don't have to be forced to buy PS3 branded accessories (which is why there are so few of them) or third party knock offs.

Do you know the highest selling accessory for the 360. It was the HD-dvd drive that retailed close to $200. You think that was needed to play games?

You should be praying to the sony gods that the rumor of ms finally allowing hd use is just a rumor. Doesn't change the fact that its still better than a ps3. You keep posting that list though, i'm sure its going to get people to buy a ps3...

Perhaps the OP didn't say it right, but I believe he was referring to SKU's, to which I quote you:

Xbox 360 Core, Premium, Elite, Core with HDMI, Premium with HDMI, Arcade... that's six.

The Core was replaced by the Core with HDMI, which is and was the same SKU. This was replaced by the Arcade. The Premium was replaced by the Premium with HDMI, same SKU.

The transition from the Core to the Arcade was a lot smoother than the transition from any PS3 to any other PS3.

The big issue is the loss of functionality. What's the functional difference between the Core and the Premium? The harddrive and a corded controller. What's the functional difference between the Premium and the Elite? The harddrive.

One PS3 can't play games another PS3 can. That's not a problem with the X-Box 360, and that's the real issue. The other stuff is peripheral (figuratively *and* literally)

Sorry, I'm going to need some clarification on the quoted text. Are you saying that certain PS3 games only work on specific PS3 SKUs? I hope you're not because you're dead wrong if you are. Could you please clarify your remarks?

Your talking about PS3's backward compatibility?

Most consumers by the latest in consoles to play the latest in video games.

But perhaps your intentionally ignoring this fact to get your failed argument through...

arent you also wrong on the 360?

dont you have to have the 20gb or bigger verison of the 360 to play old xbox games?

oh and all ps3's will play all ps3 games.

Lets talk a little about original Xbox to 360 transition. Although limited backward compatibility was included in the 360, the number of top shelf games it supported was laughable. Some work done after 360 release to increase the titles but the b/c isn't fool proof. Though no one talks about that now, everyone still love to harp about it on the PS3 side.

Its seems it's forgivable on the Microsoft side but yet it's a sin on the Sony side. I guess not enough people like me owned the original Xbox or had enough original Xbox game to complain about it vs the Sony side.

If you want PS2 compatibility you can still buy it for $129. It's called a SONY PS2.

Ok now you're just ignorant. All PS3 games can be played on any PS3. What is said might actually be REVERSED. Why? Because some of the 360's games are getting too big and might require HDD space soon. Microsoft is rumored to be releasing games soon that say, "Requires an HDD." Who did they just screw over? The people that bought the core SKU.
