Skype made it easy for members to send money but did not indicate whether the service would be free
Skype's co-founder Niklas Zennstrom announced this week that beginning shortly, Skype will offer its users the ability to send money to other Skype users via PayPal. Zennstom spoke at a technology conference in the San Francisco Bay Area and said that his company had entered into a partnership with PayPal since PayPal's online money transferring service was deemed as the most popular.
What users are wondering at this time is whether or not Skype users will be forced to pay the same fees as regular PayPal users. PayPal has a long history of complaints from its users, primarily eBay merchants that complain about rates and fees being too high.
Zennstrom did not speak of any fees but also did not confirm that the new service would be free. "You can send money over Skype. This is basically connecting the Skype community over PayPal. All the user needs is a PayPal account," said Zennstrom.
Both Skype and PayPal belong to eBay and Skype currently holds roughly 171 million registered users worldwide. No formal announcements have been made in regards to the Skype-PayPal service but Zennstrom indicated that the service would officially launch in roughly one month's time.
"A lot of people using Skype are people who have friends and family on the other side of the world," Zennstrom said.
