Hardware SiS Announces 662 Chipset

Low cost platform for Netburst processors

SiS has announced nine motherboard manufacturers have adopted its mainstream SiS662 integrated graphics chipset for Intel processors. These manufacturers include first tier manufacturers such as Asus, Foxconn and ECS. Current available SiS662 motherboards include the Asus P5SD2-MX, Universal abit SG-95, ECS 662-M, DFI 662-TMG, Foxconn 6627MA-RSH, MSI 662M, PC Chips P31G, PC Partner SiS662MS7-Z06 and Shuttle FS30.

The SiS662 chipset features support for Intel Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors with an 800 MHz front-side bus. There’s no mention of Conroe support with the SiS662. Users seeking a low cost platform for Conroe may have to wait for the upcoming SiS 672 with its DirectX 10 compatible graphics core. The Mirage 1 graphics core is integrated which is nothing special but is capable of hardware accelerated DVD decoding. While the Mirage 1 graphics core is AGP 8x based, SiS662 based motherboards will offer a PCI Express x16 expansion capabilities for external graphics.

Intel also just recently introduced a chipset to compete with SiS 662. The Intel 946GZ was silently released on July 3, 2006.

Everytime I buy a MB with a SIS chipset on it, it is a piece of junk. I have had much better luck with VIA or Nforce.

In a cheap POS office system it makes ZERO difference what the chipset is.

Well, the ECS K7S5A was a nice mobo, it would still be operating in my dad's PC if a faulty VGA had not killed the AGP slot..

I've never had a problem with a SiS chipset.

I expect the problem comes from the cheap-ass motherboards that use them, with arrays of bulging capacitors after a year or so.

Maybe SiS's Intel chipsets suck more than their AMD ones.

Not in my experience, I've worked with quite a few of the SiS P4 motherboards and found them to work well. Also used a few cheap Sis based motherboards for the AMD64 and found them better than the Nvidia boards I had personally, completely stable with no driver problems.

The only chipset I haven't had issues with is Intel. That being said I tend to use NVIDIA chipsets for AMD. (I haven't had a chance to try ATI's).

It's also true that since SiS and Via are marketed as lower cost options ... almost all the motherboards that now use these chipsets tend to have lower cost components for everything.

Thats untrue, that Intel chipsets dont have any issues.. The very first thing I recall is the abolutely poor implementation of PCIe..

On the AMD side no Itel chipset present :)
As far as I remember SIS has the most stable/issueless chipset series since the 755. Only the linux drivers for 965/966 were bit flimsy but that was minor and AFAIK corrected.

ATI is comming close with SB600. And K8T800Pro/VT8237R is now pretty mature too.

On intel side; i810 is not perfect..., initial EG/EG2 drivers are a piece of crap too.

Otherwise intel has the most consistent quality o chipset products, that's for sure. The problem is the platform issues many time overweight the chipset's quality.
