Sharp's latest Smartphone is sadly only for the Japanese market

Now here's quite a tasty dish from Sharp. The company has released a new Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone for the Japanese market. Developed in conjunction with Willcom and Microsoft the W-ZERO3/WS007SH aims to impress with a bevy of features.

The 6.1 ounce W-ZERO3 is powered by a 416MHz Intel PXA270 processor and manages to pack a 640x480 resolution into the tiny 2.8" screen. The screen can be operated in portrait or landscape modes -- landscape mode is mandatory for the included keyboard that slides out from the phone body. Sharp also includes a stylus to make UI navigation a breeze. The Smartphone also features a 1.3MP camera, WiFi, MiniSD slot, OneSeg TV expansion and USB host functionality. With USB host support, you can connect your digital camera, thumb drives or a host of other peripherals directly to your Smartphone. Sadly, Bluetooth support isn't listed on the spec sheet for the otherwise impressive phone.

According to Engadget, the 2.8" x 5.1" x 1" device will be available for $260 USD ($321 USD with a one-year contract).

if i'm not mistaken, japan is where mobile phone manufacturers test out wacky ideas before releasing them worldwide like the lg alcohol breath tester flip phone, a samsung 5mp camera-phone, etc. this thing looks like it's good to go.

siemens had something similar going with the sk-65 but it seemed to me it had a personality crisis. it was either a flash toy or a business phone and being both is not easy.

this sharp phone will attract attention but software and support will ultimately shift units

LG and Samsung are both Korean companies, so no your statement is pretty false.

It's more expensive with a contract?

It probably means $260 with 2 years, and $321 with one year.

Looks like a Sony Ericsson mobile and an iBook merged into a one device (except windows...). Looks nice.

Looks a lot like the K800, with a keyboard and windows.
Can I get it without service?

This phone is running on Japan's PHS network.

For those that don't know, PHS takes a small card, like a SIM card, but the actual radio circuitry is in the card. There is none in the phone. It would have to be completely reworked to support something like GSM/CDMA.

Too bad though. I liked the 3.7" WZero-3 myself.

Nice Phone

Very nice, looks like phone are getting there as far as being more and more an all-in-one device. One note tho: from the engaget article:
quote:
Ok, no WiFi or Bluetooth yet folks

So, no WiFi on it either :(
