Starting with the Radeon X1600 Pro, Sapphire plans to release more products in both PCIe and AGP configurations

While PCI Express is all the craze, the number of users still using AGP 4X and 8X systems still lead the tally count. Recently, most of the latest graphics products out there have started shipping in PCIe-only configurations, leaving those still using AGP systems grinding their teeth.

Sapphire today announced that it has started shipping cards based on ATI's Radeon X1600 Pro GPUs in an AGP configuration to accommodate more of the market. Sapphire already has a X1600 Pro in a PCIe configuration and its new AGP version is no different save for the interface.

A quick glance of the spec sheet reveals:
  • Engine: 500MHz
  • Shader units: 12
  • Memory speed: 800MHz
  • Memory interface: 128-bit
  • Memory: 256MB DDR2
We had the chance to speak to Sapphire this morning and asked them what its future plans are regarding AGP cards: "We have plans to ship other X1k AGP cards but the X1600 Pro AGP is available and shipping now," said Cathy Yu, Sapphire's Channel Marketing Director. Sapphire also indicated that currently, its X1600 Pro AGP card will ship with 256MB of memory but did not rule out the possibility of larger memory configurations.

It should be noted that Crossfire support is only available on the PCIe version.

I completely agree!

I'm not buying one 6600GT AGP that costs more 50€ and has lower specs over the PCIe version.

I am picking up a price of $149.00 at

I can't find one anywhere else yet. So where does that leave the x800\x850 cards?

GDDR2

The GDDR2 is what worries me here. 12 pipes at 500Mhz should be no slouch, but the 128bit 800Mhz GDDR2 memory seems a little weak. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it performs with the 6600GT and X800GTOs.

I hope some Nvidia provides vendors specs/allows them to do this as well.

Sapphire isn't the first

there already are x1600 agp cards out, from GeCube. However, GeCube only sells in Europe, I haven't seen any of their cards make it stateside. Hopefully Sapphire's will.

Are there any to be found under the AGP spec? All I find is PCI-E....
