Say hello to Centrino Pro
Intel’s upcoming Santa Rosa Centrino refresh is expected to arrive later this year in Q2'07. The refreshed platform is expected to introduce a new processor socket and family of 965-derived mobile chipsets. There will also be a new Centrino branding catered towards business users, dubbed Centrino Pro, joining the existing Centrino Duo and Centrino brands and be the mobile equivalent to Intel’s vPro for desktops. Notebook Review has managed to snag some images of the Centrino Pro logo.
As with Intel’s vPro desktop platform, the Centrino Pro platform adds more business features such as Intel Active Management Pro technology. Intel AMT technology allows IT to remotely update, discover problems and fix systems remotely on a hardware level—albeit if the software supports the hardware features. This includes keeping the virus scanner up to date throughout an enterprise and isolating problematic systems. It is unknown what additional features Intel AMT Pro adds to the current Intel AMT.
Centrino Pro will brand laptops will not be powered by the GM965 and PM965 used in Centrino Duo and Centrino based notebooks. Instead Intel will introduce a separate mobile 965 variant with Intel AMT Pro technology. DailyTech speculates the upcoming Centrino Pro chipset will be named QM965. A new Gigabit Ethernet controller will also be introduced at the same time to take advantage of the Intel AMT Pro hardware features -- Intel 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection with Intel AMT Pro.
Expect Centrino Pro based notebooks to arrive in Q2’2007 with the upcoming Santa Rosa refresh.
"If you look at the last five years, if you look at what major innovations have occurred in computing technology, every single one of them came from AMD. Not a single innovation came from Intel." -- AMD CEO Hector Ruiz in 2007
