Samsung's latest Blu-ray player comes in at the $799 price point

With Toshiba having already kicked off its second generation of high-definition players with the HD-A2 (HDMI 1.2, 1080i, $499) and the HD-XA2 (HDMI 1.3, 1080p, $999), it's Samsung's time to shine with a second generation Blu-ray player. The company's new BD-P1200 ups the ante on the Blu-ray scene with a new Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) processor.

The BD-P1200 will be able to offer true 1080i and 1080p HD de-interlacing via the HQV processor and the HDMI 1.3 connection. Samsung has also incorporated Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) technology which enables the user to control multiple Samsung products from a single remote control. The new Blu-ray player also supports a full gamut of audio options including 192KHz LPCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS.

The BD-P1200 will launch in March of this year for an estimated retail price of $799; $200 cheaper than Toshiba’s range-topping HD-XA2.

They should be technically capable of it yes. However as it has not been outlined on any specs I have found thus far. Don't hold me to it that it will.

Odly enough though the Sony and Pioneer units can't read CD's meaning for people who still listen to CDs through their entertainment center will need a DVD or CD player. Nor do the specs call for a network connections so about the only cust effective way of updating the FW is to have a DVD/BD disc with the FW on it. Pain in the butt. Luckily the G1 Sammy supported CD, haven't checked on that though.

Luckily for me a Ethernet connection and CD support is a requirement for the spec of HD-DVD. For multiple sound tracks and subtitles can be downloaded on the fly from databases all over the world. Something that can only be done on a limited basis with only select hard on the BD side.

Has anybody else clicked the product image link? Its BIG.

I guess Hi-Def aficionados want even their product images in Hi-def ;) (although, 4473 x 2473 pixels is about 5 times 1920 * 1080)

That's just so you can experience the sexiness in all its glory.

Seriously, that's a nice looking piece of hardware.

4473 x 2473 pixels is for people to notice that the model is wrong: it's BD-P1100 instead of BD-P1200.

Why is Samsung even making BD players?

They can single handedly tip the scale in Toshiba's favor by backing HD-DVD.

Samsung can easily tank Sony and become the NEW SONY (hopefully without all the arrogance of Sony).

All they need to do is breakup the LCD alliance and back Toshiba (scratch my back, I'll scratch yours) and voilla~! Sonys GONE!

sure, it would be a great thing for hddvd - like "hey, *another* hddvd manufacturer! one that's not toshiba nor rebadged toshiba! we win!".
would it be enough to end the war, i doubt it. but getting another manufacturer, even if not samsung, is something that has to happen soon if hddvd is to exist in the future.

you ask why samsung doesn't make hddvd? gee, maybe because of its worse capacity, speed, protection, studio support and whatnot. if it weren't for universal's exclusivity, hddvd wouldn't be alive already - now there's a company that can really singlehandedly end the war if it wanted.

Samsung making HD DVD player. Not very likely.

A lot of people think Blu-Ray is a Sony only thing - when actually Sony, Philips, Sansung and other manufactors are major hardware sponsers. Sansung actually had a Blu-Ray player before Sony had it.

It is interesting note the price of 1080p HD DVD player - it actually in the same range of Blu-Ray - this new Samsung is actually cheaper. So I would guess if there was a 1080i Blu-Ray player - it would be cheap.

Also it is very important to look a new movie release in the HD Formats. 56 are Blu-Ray while only 13 are HD DVD. My guess is reason why Samsung is not making a HD DVD player - because HD DVD likely will become the betamax in this area.

The real news is this area is once a manufactor gets a Blu-Ray player for under $400 - best way now to get on is 20G PS3. Sony could come out with low end PS3 aim at movies and less with games - maybe?

Slight error...

You can't de-interlace 1080-progressive. Those two need to be swapped around.

What I would like to know is if the BD-P1200 passes 1080p24 like the XA2 or not...

Also, Toshiba just announced it has released a HD-DVD player called the A20, which has true 1080p24 output and only costs $599. Begun, the price war has.

I think that a lot of people overrate the price of the player compared to the media. Last time I checked the media I have for my DVD collection is tens of times more then the cost of the player I have. The player is a one time purchase, so if one player is $100 that translates into what 4-6 discs out of a collection of a few hundred?

Better and Cheaper

This is good news for all of us. Second Generation already PLUS it's cheaper by $200 which is only more good news for the consumers. Right now I dont care about either format yet so let them bring on better players for less money. I love competition and damn that's a sexy machine.

hdmi-cec? interesting
By joeld on 1/7/2007 10:49:10 PM , Rating: 2
I didn't realize that hdmi could be used for stuff like networking devices for remote control use. Sounds like how firewire works with Mitsubishi's netCommand stuff. That didn't take off, so perhaps HDMI device networking will since it is becoming universal?

Also, is HDMI-CEC a standard or something that will always be locked to an individual manufacturer's devices?

If I were in the HD DVD camp, I would hope that a combo system does not appear. Why? Because if it did then there would even less distinction between Blu Ray and HD DVD for the home entertainment consumer. HD DVD would end up a subset of Blu Ray, the technical specs are that close. Hell even the hardware is the same. Blu Ray will win on the PC front alone because the price per MB is better then HD DVD.

I will admit that the execution of Blu Ray has been lackluster at best, but then again people are comparing something that is much more mature HD DVD to something that just came out. Let wait for the second gen players and content to appear. If there are still major issues with Blu Ray then yet I will say it will have lost on the Home entertainment market.

Wow, AlexWade, are you an idiot. The combo player doesn't even support HD-DVD's interactivity layer. There are at least 5x as many Blu-ray players in existence as HD-DVD, and the gap widens daily. There are now more BD titles than HD-DVD and the gap widens weekly. PS3 outsold both the PS2 and Xbox 360 in their respective first two months. Far more support among hardware vendors and studios.

I can't believe you could claim without a smiley that Blu-ray is losing!

RE: Too bad ...
By DingieM on 1/8/2007 4:22:08 AM , Rating: 1
I too heard many things that do not support Blu-Ray success.
The word on the internet is around 70% is positive about HD-DVD and there are barely nice things said about Blu-Ray.
I heard there were much more HD-DVD titles than Blu-Ray's and the same accounts for the devices.
And what you say about PS3 outselling the rest in the first respective months doesn't mean **anything**. Don't you know there are roughly ten times as much Xbox360's sold than PS3's? Even then thats what the console makers sold to the stores. Its a fact that the Xbox360 is selling well to the customers and only a handfull of people are willing to buy the PS3. There are plenty of PS3's up for grabs! Go figure it out.
Indeed many more companies are supporting the Blu-Ray format but that is really not enough. HD-DVD is also backed by giants like Microsoft. The external Xbox360 HD-DVD players are sold like hot cakes and LiteOn is going to make these things as well.
Even the sex industry is choosing HD-DVD and that industry is just gigantic.

I think that HD-DVD is going to win because if its better price and interactive capabilities. Blu-Ray doesn't have any significant advantage to bring the "victory" to the Blu-Ray camp. It only has a slightly better protection scheme and slightly more storage space. According to some wiki page HD-DVD's can store up to 90Gb on a disk...
And Blu-Ray discs are fragile because the data is pushed so close to the top layer of the disc.

At this moment HD-DVD is the winner but it surely can shift but at this moment there are no signs of it.

PS3 failed. End of story. Within two months of launch, it is easy to walk into stores and buy one. Who wants one? Not I. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal saying only 400,000 were sold. ABC News even had an article on how easy it is to find a PS3. The new Toshiba 1080p player is slated to cost $600. Still not worth it, but less than this. And, finally, just because Blu-Ray has more movies available does not mean they are selling more. In fact, HD DVD discs are outselling Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray still has many studio's support. If combo players do both well and cheaply, it won't matter. But, if they do not, Blu-Ray will never be able to overcome HD DVD's better price, the things consumers consider first. Blu-Ray wanted to win outright; it won't. Much like BetaMax, like UMD, like MiniDisc, like ATRAC, Sony created another loser.

I bought my Toshiba player for $450...and it came with 5 free HD-DVD movies as well. It doesn't output 1080p, but since its 1080i signal deinterlaces to 1080p with no loss in image quality, that's hardly a missing feature.

> "There are at least 5x as many Blu-ray players in existence as HD-DVD..."

I don't know where you get this figure...neither the HD-DVD nor the Blu-Ray camp releases player sales figures. However, disc sales figures are released...and HD-DVD is strongly outselling Blu-Ray here. That seems to indicate HD-DVD is winning the format war to me.

> "PS3 outsold both the PS2 and Xbox 360 in their respective first two months..."

What in the world does this have to do with HD-DVD vs. Blu Ray?

Toshiba's 1080p's player is more expensive than this, and the rest of your post is pretty much in the same line ... wrong.
