Samsung expands its Q1 Ultra family

Samsung yesterday officially expanded its Q1 Ultra UMPC family with the addition of the three new models. All three new models feature the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system.

The Q1U-ELXP comes with a 600MHZ Intel A100 processor, 40GB HDD and will retail for $999 USD. Stepping up to the $1,149 Q1U-XP gets you an 800MHz Intel A110 processor 60GB HDD.

The new range-topping model is the one to watch, however. The Q1U-SSDXP comes equipped with Intel's 800MHz A110 processor and a 32GB Samsung Solid State Disk (SSD). The SSD, however, pushes the price tag to a whopping $1,649.

"Since pioneering the UMPC form factor one year ago, Samsung has relied on customer insights to deliver a range of ultra mobile computing solutions that best meet the varied needs of our customers," said Samsung Senior Product Marketing Manager Bret Berg. "With the Q1U-SSDXP, Q1U-XP and the Q1U-ELXP, Samsung has delivered three new solutions that appeal to a broader range of personal and professional users."

All three of the new models come equipped with 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 7" LED backlit (1024x600) display, dual webcams, dual array microphone, 802.11g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, biometric fingerprint reader, two USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port and a 10/100 NIC.

Although Samsung announced official pricing for the Q1U-ELXP, Q1U-XP and Q1U-SSDXP today, at least one online retailer is listing drastically lower street prices for some of the UMPCs. PC Connection lists the trio at $999, $1,049 and $1,499 respectively.

Bragging Rights

There are so many similar UMPC's coming out now - at a much lower price tag than the Samsung's. Just like there are going to be many similar phones comprable to the iPhone. I guess purchasing one is solely for bragging rights.

What other UMPC models do you have in mind?

I personally like these

1. $199-$369 Asus Eee UMPC
2. $999 Fujitsu's LifeBook U810 - much better specs than $999 Samsung.

100% agreed.
These samsungs are too expensive for what they bring.
The EEE has an almost equivalent CPU (arguably better in the case of the $999 Q1), same screen size, plus a real keyboard for a third of the price.
The only thing where the EEE can't compete is obviously the storage size, as a max of 16gb will not suit everyone (but it will be a great fit for me, BTW)
The lifebook also looks much more promising than these.

The EEE also loses out on screen real estate (800x480 vs 1024x600), but you can't really argue for the price.

The Lifebook is a great device. If I hadn't already plunked down for a Q1U-V, I might have bought one. The only thing I don't like the is the smaller 5.6" display screen vs 7" on the Q1U-V.

I've switched my resolution to 800x600 and was browsing for the last couple of hours to simulate the 800x480 experience. Overall, a lot of the sites seem to work well at that resolution. There's more vertical scrolling but surprisingly I hardly ever needed to scroll horizontally. Of course it will depend on what people's favorite sites are, but I think I won't be bothered much by the screen size. I'm getting more and more set to get an Eee!

Thanks for the listing - I somehow missed seeing news on the Eee, looks like a very cool device if they can make it happen for $199. Engadget listed a rumor on Aug. 16th that they would be coming out in late Sept. with only 2 GB of memory for $269-299, which would make it much less attractive in my book. Fingers crossed for $199!

I don't know, the features are definitely better on the Fujitsu but the pics I have seen of it = UGLY. I am a form over function guy, but still want good function as well.

It is necessary to note that this product & others to follow
in the near future link up to this-

Chandrasekher introduced the IntelĀ® Ultra Mobile platform 2007 (formerly codenamed "McCaslin") for MIDs and UMPCs and said systems will be available over the summer from Aigo*, Asus*, Fujitsu*, Haier*, HTC* and Samsung*. The Intel Ultra Mobile platform 2007 is based on the Intel processor A100 and A110, the Intel 945GU Express Chipset and the Intel ICH7U I/O Controller Hub.

3G wireless modem?
By plewis00 on 8/29/2007 12:20:53 PM , Rating: 2
With all these internet tablet-style devices (I presume that is what they are aiming for) why on earth is there no HSDPA/3G modem installed in them? I remember the original announcement said they would have them but it seems to have been removed from the final spec. Any ideas? And yes, I know you can use a Bluetooth-enabled 3G handset but it's an additional chain in the link and you lose other benefits like seeing your connection speed and signal quality. Way to shoot themselves in the foot, just like the iPhone lacking 3G...

It looks right movement to have windows XP instead of Slow & Heavy Vista.
I'd like to keep watching SSD model until price drop whithin my budget range ($999).
