70" of 1080p goodness

Samsung is taking full advantage of its position as the world's largest TFT-LCD supplier by unveiling the first 70" LCD TV panel for the consumer market. Samsung is taking its fight to plasma display panel (PDP) and projection TV makers and will begin shipping its 70" monster in the first half of next year.

"Our new 70-inch LCD is not only significantly larger, but also sets a new benchmark of excellence in terms of video image reproduction, viewing angle and image quality. We've designed it to dramatically enhance the large screen LCD TV user's viewing experience," said Executive Vice President Kim Sang-Soo of Samsung Electronics.

The 70" television supports full high-definition resolution (1080p) and has a viewing angle of 180 degrees. It has a contrast ratio of 2000:1, brightness of 600nits, a response time of 8ms and can display 1.07 billion colors. This luscious 1080p display could be enough to make even Microsoft XBOX execs blush.  No price for the TV has been disclosed.

Samsung recently announced that its S-LCD partnership with Sony was getting a $2 billion cash infusion. The newly expanded plant will become operational in 2007 and will be producing 2.2 x 2.5 meter 8th generation glass substrates.

1080p :)

Also...180deg viewing angle...wow....what next, 190deg viewing angle? :) But seriously, 180deg? so at 170deg it looks sharp as head-on? Doubt it....

They mean that you can see the television from 180 degrees. Surely you don't expect them to keep their specs within the normal definition, do you? ;)

Yep I agree!

But nothing is impossible, imagine a 360 viewing angle, being able to walk around the flat screen and see it from both sides.

That would slightly change your living room setup!

If it could do that, I would hang it in the middle of the room and put furniture on both sides.

Wouldn't all of the text be backwards on the back side?

So put 2 back-to-back. Now you have your 358deg viewing angle (179x2). Don't you need some more furniture now?

Seriously, 70" is cool and all, but I already have a 72" 1080P DLP, and I'd bet it's half the price that this thing will go for. I'd also be willing to bet better color reprodction and definately better response time. OK, so I can't hang it on the wall.......but my receivers, et. al. also can't be hung on the wall (flat). So until prices come WAY down, and all other HT components are made flat/hidden/invisible, Just no point in it yet.

Kudo's for the technology. This will only help to bring prices down further in the future.

i highly doubt that it would have anywhere near the color reproduction that an LCD would. AND DEFINITLY not the viewing angle

There's already working prototypes of 360 degree TVs.

If your nose is at 180 degrees, parallel to the screen, then one of you eyes should be out in front of the screen and could see it. As long as you have 2 good eyes, you can have a 180 degree viewing angle.

Well Phillips or Panasonic or someone is also releasing one and its going for the low low price of only $69,995.95. Because when you're about to spend $70,000 on a TV, that $4.95 is a deal breaker on the purchase.

The only place this thing will show up is in executives and rap "artists" homes.

Because theres no substitute for a small penis like a giant T.V.

Why does everyone who can't afford something say that those who can afford it and do buy it are making up for a small penis?

Anytime a car thread, an expensive computer thread, or anything like that comes up, someone mentions small penises...

Besides, I didn't even notice the TV in the picture the first time.

Its a joke.

Even if I could afford it, I still wouldn't buy it. Having money and knowing how to spend money are two different things. Buying a $70,000 TV is retarded no matter how much money you have.

But what else will go with my $190,000 audio system?!?? The only reason paying 70K on a TV is retarded is because a revision of that TV will be released two years later with better features for around 10K. I'm exaggerating a little, but not by much.

A TV that much had better come with full-blown HQV processing...

so 1.07 billion colors, that means samsung is using a 10 bit panel?

RE: colors
By Suomynona on 8/21/2006 10:53:04 AM , Rating: 2
10 bit, ~8 ms (8.333 ms to be exact)

RE: colors
By Shadowself on 8/21/2006 11:43:31 AM , Rating: 2
If only that 8 ms response time were full on to full off, but I bet it's not. It's probably just more of that "gray-to-gray" BS they keep using.

I'll consider buying something like this when they get a full on to full off response time of 8 ms.

I guess you're right.... 30bits/3 to make 10 bit panel. I didn't know the lcd terminology went by just on color

RE: colors
By feelingshorter on 8/21/2006 12:40:50 PM , Rating: 2
Its calculated as (2^10)(2^10)(2^10) (for three colors) so that becomes 1,073,741,824 colors. 10 bit monitor is right.

But with this LCD display, you have a much better chance of actually seeing it during the daytime.

Wasn't someone somewhere working on the surface of projector screens to give a better image reproduction in bright(er) light? Something about crystals in the fabric weave or some such nonsense. I'd certainly go for a projector if it was useful all the time, not just with the curtains drawn or at night.

This coming, by the way, from a man who still has a bog-standard non progressive-scan crt TV plugged into his 360. At least it isn't interlaced, I suppose.

Best Thing About This HDTV...
By NextGenGamer2005 on 8/21/2006 8:50:50 PM , Rating: 2
Jeesh, DailyTech forgot to mention the single best spec about this new 70" LCD HDTV from Samsung. The screen runs at 120Hz, and not the 60Hz that every other HDTV made runs at. This makes it the first CE product that could natively run games at 120fps, a goal Sony once stated PS3 could achieve (although I doubt it will ever happen).

By therealnickdanger on 8/22/2006 9:49:54 AM , Rating: 2
I noticed the 120Hz thing too. Now LCD can claim competitiveness with LCoS on that level. I'm a firm believer in LCoS, but I think I'll stick with my plasma until it dies or SED becomes mainstream (and by mainstream I mean available at any Best Buy).

By Shining Arcanine on 8/21/2006 10:55:59 AM , Rating: 2
Corning must be really happy, as they make the LCD glass that goes into Samsung's panels.
