Dell XPS M1330 gets a 64GB SSD option
Alienware and Dell get down with Samsung's largest SSD

News of solid state disks (SSDs) continues to roll in on weekly basis. Last week, we saw the introduction of a new low-cost SSD solution from SanDisk along with high performance and outrageously expensive solutions on the high-end from Mtron.

Now we have learned that the 64GB SSDs that Samsung announced in late June are now shipping in new notebooks from Alienware and Dell.

Dell will provide the 64GB SSD option in its delay-prone 13.3" XPS M1330 notebook. Dell will also make the SSD available in its Latitude and Precision mobile workstations.

Alienware has chosen to makes Samsung's 64GB SSD available on the Area-51 m9750 gaming notebook. The SSD will be available in single drive mode or two can be combined in RAID-0 for a total of 128GB of storage space. Customers also have the option of pairing a single 64GB SSD with a larger 200GB 7200 RPM HDD.

"The greater reliability and higher performance of solid state drives makes them a highly viable alternative to hard drives in corporate and high-end consumer notebooks,” said Samsung Director of Flash Marketing Jim Elliott. “We're delighted that Dell and Alienware have chosen the Samsung 64GB SSD for their latest generation of leading-edge notebooks."

Samsung's 64GB SSD uses 51nm single-level cell (SLC) flash memory and features read speeds of 65MB/sec and write speeds of 45MB/sec.

Probably much, much more than we're willing to pay ;-)

an arm and a leg probably.
(I've read rumors of about an additional ~1,5-2k $ for the SSD)

If my name were Jeffery Dahmer that wouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, but I suppose I can look it up myself.

From Dell, the 32GB SSD is an additional $450 over the price of the base 160GB 5400RPM drive. I don't see any option for a 64GB SSD on Dell's site yet.

From Alienware, the 32GB SSD is an additional $500 over the price of the base 80GB 7200RPM drive and the 64GB SSD is $1100 more.

That is Fn crazy. Anyone paying that much is nuts. Those 64gb drives will be less then $200 in 6 months.

To be sure, the price will come down, but not that far.

I've actually been seriously considering getting a 32GB HD with a new low end laptop. I've been wanting to experiment with Linux Ubuntu server for awhile without having to resort to a dual boot configuration, and I really like the idea of having something that won't die on me. I really, really hate losing data. I back stuff up, but not often enough to save everything that gets lost. I would pay $500 to get some of the stuff I've lost back, simply because it's unique and may be lost forever. 32 GB isn't much for games and music, but for the amount of writing and photos that I produce, it can suit my needs quite splendidly, and most importantly, securely.

Anyways, my point is that for some people the data on the drive is very important. Solid state can supposedly take a drop and survive. A student of mine dropped my hard drive enclosure on the ground. A 2' drop and it's gone. I had everything important backed up, but those backups are in another country. Anyways, my $.02.

EXPRESS CARD?

Wish they would come out with a form 54 Express Card at nice high speed reads and writes. That field is RIPE, with the introduction of Sony's new SERIES of solid state HD Video Camcorders like the PMW-EX1 and its kin to follow. Sony charges two arms and 3 legs for 8GB and 16GB cards, in a time when I would expect the smallest size to be 64GB at more reasonable cost. Come on guys, give'em some competition. I know LOTS of cameramen who are dying to get cheaper cards.
