Online retailers begin shipping Samsung's second generation UMPC

Samsung teased us for the past few months with its new Q1 Ultra Mobile PC. Samsung officially launched the Q1 Ultra in early May and said that the first units would be made available in late May. True to their word, the devices started trickling out last week to online retailers’ virtual store shelves.

A number of online retailers (including Buy.com, Costco and Provantage) have been popping in and out of stock of the Q1U-V version of the Q1 Ultra. The $1,199 Q1U-V comes equipped with an 7" 1024x600 LED-backlit display, 800MHz Intel A110 processor, Intel GMA950 graphics, 1GB DDR2 memory, 60GB 4200RPM 1.8" HDD, dual webcams, 2-in-1 SD/MMC memory slot and Windows Vista Home Premium. Other features (which are shared among all Q1 Ultra models) include Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 802.11b/g wireless, two USB 2.0 ports and a 10/100 Ethernet port.

The Q1 Ultra measures 8.96" x 4.88" x 0.93" and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. Samsung says that the Q1 Ultra's lithium-ion battery is rated at over 4.5 hours, although an optional 6-cell battery extends runtime to 8.5 hours. An optional 8-cell “Power Bank” raises that figure to 11 hours.

Although Samsung likes to tout that its Q1 Ultra starts at just $799 (Q1U-EL), there haven’t been any reports of retailers shipping that model. The Q1U-EL features a 600MHz Intel A100 processor, 1GB DDR2 memory and 40GB HDD. It, however, lacks the dual cameras and SD/MMC memory slot.

Online (p)reviews for the device have been quite favorable so far. Overall performance for the 800MHz version in Windows Vista is respectable and the LED-backlit screen has won much praise. The unit’s tiny keys, however, have drawn some criticism.

I personally bought one... the low-end 600MHz unit. Buy.com had it on pre-order for $777.99 and had a 7% off coupon which brought it down to $723 shipped.

I sold my 2GHz Core 2 Duo 14.1" notebook (which was overkill for me even though it was my ONLY computer) and picked up a refurbished HP dual core desktop for $279 and an Acer 22" WS LCD monitor for $150 A/R, A/C.

I came out pretty close to even with the sale of my laptop and the purchase of the desktop/LCD/Q1 ultra.

I mainly choose to go this route b/c I love the small size and light weight for travel. That coupled with full Windows functionality was a big plus.

BTW, I'll post a full blog/review of the device once it arrives.

I am definatley going to buy it in a few weeks. Since I don't play games anymore (because of my wife) this thing does more then enough to fulfill all my computing needs.

Marriage and games are mutually exclusive? That's news to me!

Most of the (p)reviews posted so far have been short "poke reports" from people under a time limit in an uncontrolled environment. Hopefully someone technologically inclined can get their hands on one and do a real review.

I agree, Id love to see an actual hands on non biased review of this item. Ive been looking into getting a smaller, lighter, longer lasting battery UMPC and this one would even match my PS3 lol. My aging Toshiba laptop needs to be replaced and hit the graveyard due to no battery life and a charger that has been spliced over and over again.

Hopefully it will be great for work.

I install and repair AV equipment for the classrooms and conference rooms at the university for which I work. I've been following the UMPCs, but this one is the first I think might work. I have a laptop that I carry between office, home, and anywhere else I need heavy lifting processing. This would allow me to check/update work tickets, e-mail, check room schedules, IM, test sound and VGA, drive a SmartBoard from the USB connection, carry PDF documentation on every piece of equipment, and take it to meetings, all in a size and weight I can carry in my tool bag.

I've been thinking of getting one too. I really only need something which will write notes and go on the internet, so I can use something like this for that. 800 for the basic one seems a bit much though.
