Will come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes

Samsunghub is reporting that Samsung has confirmed a new, Android-based media player based on the popular Galaxy S line of smartphones.

The device, dubbed the Galaxy Player, is set to make its debut next weekend at the CES conference. The music and media player is a spin-off of the ubiquitous Galaxy S, and is quite similar, minus the cell connectivity.

The Galaxy Player (YP-GB1) is 9.9-mm thick and runs Android 2.2 "Froyo". It sports a 1GHz CPU, 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen with WVGA 800 x 480 resolution. It also boasts SoundAlive audio enhancing technology, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 3.2-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera. GPS, HD video playback, a micro-SD card slot, Android Market, and a 1200 mAh removable battery round out the rest of the specs we know of.

The Galaxy Player will come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes. Samsung may also announce other Galaxy Player iterations, like the YP-G50, at CES.

I know alot of people who like the ipod touches, and good to see something coming as an alternative to that. I will be interested if they good some good music player software cause my Evo does not have any good music apps.

Eh?

That's why there's the Android Market. Suggest Poweramp as that's my current favorite, although cubed (3) works pretty good as well.

Am I the only person on the planet who hates iTunes?

God no.

iTunes is awful. It reminds me of advertising: dumbing down to the lowest common denominator to reach a larger base.

It's intrusive, controlling, and unintuitive.

iTunes is the prime example that popularity doesn't mean some thing is best or even good.

The default setup of iTunes is pretty bad - but once you set it up properly, and remove crap you don't need, its pretty good.

No, i had an ipod before, and just used winamp to sync it. Ill give those apps you suggested a try. just seems like when im listening, tracks pause in between each other, not flowing well between the tracks.

I checked Poweramp and it doesn't even have gapless playback.
Android seems very deficient in music software. OTOH of the main players (Android, iPhone, WP7) it has the greatest potential to have a good player, since it's the least restricted; and people associated with rockbox are working on a port to an android app.

I'm totally digging doubleTwist right now as my music app and I highly recommend that as it also has a built library of streaming radio stations.

I've been on the borderline of getting an Android phone, and the only thing holding me back is not wanting to pay for a data package. If these are about the same price or cheaper than an iPod touch, I'll be interested.
Kind of related: it'd be nice if they priced the high capacity version of the iPod Touch closer to the base price. There's no way 56GB of flash costs almost as much as every other component in the iPod.

Just pay for the phone outright...that way you save having 2 devices to carry around, unless its not a big deal for you.

I rather have $100 phone and $200 media player/ipod than paying $600 phone outright.

Especially considering how fast top of the line phones depreciate, and how rapid new phones come out.

Also with 2 devices, there is less concern for battery life.

I can see that, especially if your music collection is larger than 16 GB. But the phone/music player being depreciated is a moot point. the functionality is still there. but the costs are something else to look at. Definitly up to you as what will work best.

Nice alternative to iTouch

Nice to see another company took their existing phone and made it into a player only device. Apple did the same thing, just wish they made the screen taller due to absence of the speaker (not the music speaker). Now with 4th gen iTouch it's moot point due to the camera.

The memory slot alone sells this for me and its supposed to be $200-$250.00 at launch.

I suspect I'll go for the base unit and add memory as needed.

...but why in Dog's name would you want to be forced to carry around 2 devices - when one device can do both? Same Android apps for both...same screen, so on and so forth. Makes no sense to carry around a cell phone and a music player.

Not everyone wants a smartphone; and even among those who want them not all of them have parents willing to pay that much more a month for one.

Yea, exactly. This device along with the iPod Touch are basically for people that do not have an iPhone or Galaxy S/Android phone. If one already has a Galaxy S/Evo/Droid2/DroidX/Incredible and youre buying this...you just like to waste money.

It makes no sense to spend $1000+ dollars a year on a phone (with or without a music player) but there are plenty who do.

yeesh, im only now considering replacing my samsung mythic, ive had this thing for at least 2 years now

so this is essentially a Galaxy S running Froyo 2.2 without cell connectivity and yet the Galaxy S phone itself STILL does not have Froyo????

AWESOME!

This device totally rocks! My only complaints/questions are: Why didn't they just add a better front/rear camera like the LG 2x that can do HD front/rear? A bigger battery-- Really how long will a 1200 mAh battery last? As a frequent traveller, I'd like a battery that can run thru a 10hr+ flight. And lastly, as StinkyWhizzleTeeth mentioned, why Froyo, will this thing even run Android market? I know this seems picky but they're already going with High specs- might as well put Apple to shame.

RE: AWESOME!
By lagitup on 12/27/2010 9:47:29 PM , Rating: 2
That's a pretty damn big battery, actually: cell connectivity is a HUGE drain and my samsung moment only has a 1440mAH. Cell phones can have more expensive parts and bits like the LG 2x because they're subsidized by carrier, and why not Froyo? I'd rather it get Gingerbread or Honeycomb a few months late and be well-optimized rather than get it now and have it run shoddy.

I'll wait for Honeycomb
By StinkyWhizzleTeeth on 12/27/2010 6:46:37 PM , Rating: 2
I'm going to wait for the Honeycomb version of Android, which will be optimized for devices without cell phone capability. And I want one that I can hook a keyboard, video screen, and mouse up to, so it can be my sole computing device.

Plus I'm not sure if this device will really have the Android Market. Yeah I could steal it, but I don't want to.
