Samsung's high-end Blu-ray Disc player cancelled

Samsung was one of the first to market with a Blu-ray Disc player last year, but the South Korean company now appears to be pulling the plug on the release of its high-end player that was originally slated for this fall.

The Samsung BDP-2400 has been cancelled and will not be brought to market, according to WesleyTech. The report speculates that Samsung decided to cancel the player as it was unable to meet the October 31 deadline for BD 1.0 specifications.

The BDP-2400 isn’t the only machine to hit a release date snag, though, as Samsung’s dual-format HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc player is also reportedly pushed back to December.

The hybrid player, originally announced back in April, was expected for a release in October or November.

Samsung VP of Digital AV marketing Reid Sullivan said in a previous story, "Samsung is excited to introduce a new line of high-definition players that will enrich the theater experience at home... From the top-of-the-line BD-UP5000 to the entry BD-P1400 to the company's first home theater system with Blu-ray disc playback, Samsung offers a range of products at different price points to suit the growing consumer demand."

A player that plays HD and BD with full support for all specs and also has a Silicon Optix Reon (or higher) processing chip - all for the price of $500 of less. The Toshiba XA2 offers all but the BD component for about $450, so it shouldn't be too much longer before it's possible to get something like that.

$500 is still too expensive. But they will keep coming down with time, there no real reason to jump and make the switch yet.

$500 is cheap for the features I described. Find for me any SD-DVD player featuring an Reon-level video processing for under $500. I'm guessing the closest you'll get is the Denon 2930CI, which is over $600 and only plays DVDs.

$500 isn't good for mainstream, no doubt, but I would spend that for what I want.

I didnt mean it was expensive in comparison to the current players in the market. I just meant that the prices of the current market are still too high.

Only problem is that with a dual-format player it seems less likely for a free-disk promotion. Or at least it seems that way. :-) If they did, which format would be free? Both?

Who wouldn't want two HD versions of Blazing Saddles? Bah, even if they did honor both, i have enough sucky movies.

That is too bad, I was hoping this segment of the market would begin to develop so we could end all the ridiculous fan-boy wars over which format is acceptable.

The hybrid market should be the future, and I will not purchase a next-gen format player until these become widely available.

I'm a HD-DVD adopter myself and i don't regret it but sometimes theres been blu-ray releases i wish i could have. a machine like this in every home could end the petty squabling between HD-DVD and blu-ray once and for all. i'd have one.

This new player still leaves the burning question unanswered...

Is it theoretically possible to make a Blu Ray player that doesn't have blue lights on the front of it? Judging from past players, it seems not.

Maybe if they just concentrated on visual and audio quality instead of Java menus, picture-in-picture, those awful trailers, etc., they would be able to bring the price down. But no, once BD1.0 comes out early adopters may not be able to play their older movies. So, what good is it? Since the new Samsungs won't be coming out, and knowing that once BD1.0 comes out will make the older units obsolete, then why bother buying a Samsung in the first place?

Just give us the best visual and audio quality, sans trailers and all the other superfluous features and we'd probably be happy. But then we probably wouldn't need all that extra disc space...

For the first time ever i have seen a new "high def" tv that had the same image quality as the tv i have at home (which is a 27" flat tube crt) playing a dvd. The tv was a 50" phillips that was connected to a Blu-Ray player. Total cost was almost twice as much as my first car was, but i was impressed. However i still refuse to upgrade till the point where everything i watch on tv will look at least close to as good as that does. In my mind it is too much money to get that bigger screen to look as good as a CRT does.
