Chinese manufacturers have already begun making silicon cases for the alleged iPad 2, sporting cutouts for the camera and new speaker.  (Source: Engadget.com)
New device could be smaller, with larger speaker and dual cameras

File this one squarely in the rumor column: anonymous Chinese sources have leaked a few secret details of the next-generation iPad to a Japanese blog, Engadget reports.

Again, the following specs are unconfirmed, but here is what the blog, Mac Otakara, alleges: the next-generation iPad will have the same 9.7-inch display, a flattened back, and a bezel width 3-mm smaller than the current device. There is also a "wide-range speaker" covered with "metal mesh" (see picture). The iPad 2 is said to measure 239 x 186 mm, slightly smaller than the current iPad's 242.8 x 189.7 mm size.

As for cameras, the source could not confirm the existence of dual cameras. However, previous reports strongly suggest the next iPad will sport a front-facing camera for FaceTime, as well as a rear-facing one for higher resolution photos.

According to the source, production on the new iPad has begun and it should begin shipping from factories "between mid to end of January." If that's the case, we'll certainly be hearing more about the follow-up to the hugely successful tablet from Apple very soon.

And how about its weigth?

I don't care about bezel size but I sure hope it weighs much less than the current one at 1.6lbs. Under one pound would make reading much more comfortable.

I wonder what it will cost. I have no need for an IPAD, especially in this bad economy, but Apple has found another to get those stood in lines afew months ago, to stand in line again, & pay as much or more than they did months previous. Now that I think about it, I don't own anything by Apple.

Practically nobody has a "need" for an iPad - its a luxury item. That said, I hope these rumors are true, as I'm holding out on my tablet purchase until the 2nd gen comes out, and I really don't want to wait until March/April.

I donlt knwo why anyone cares, or even believes this artcle anyway.

Everyone (well, all the wise sages on DT) knows that the iPad will be an epic fail and never catch on.

So this article is a complete waste of time, and not only that, but missleading too.

lol, we all know that no one wants these things. DT readers said so!!! XD

We all realize that there will always be a market for shallow, flashy kit. This market of course has, for their calling card, a pale piece of produce, which helps to indicate their status as the high-priced, low-hanging fruit of the industry.

Lol, I really don't know if you're being serious or not?!?

How much denial is there out there in the MS fanboy/anti-Apple fanboy world?

Apple have shifted tons of these iPads, and other companies are scrambling to join the party. Yet still you deny that there is a genuine market for these devices and have to attack them and the people who by them because they don't agree with your (own little) shallow and bitter (is how most of you guys come over, by the way) view of how people should behave. All until MS release a tablet of course, and then tehy will be the greatest idea ever.

Some of you sad little guys are so pathetic it's embarrassing. So consumed with your Apple hate and dare I say a little envy for the people who buy, or can afford to buy, their kit, without having to worry about it? Else why would you care?

I've never bought an Apple product by the way, before you accuse me of being a Applite or whatever. I can't say that I care for their software the price of their goods and how they generally go about doing things/controlling their products and uses, but there's no arguing with their success and units shipped.

If there are millions of shallow people, then kudos to Apple for identifying them and sucking the money from their pockets too. I don't really see how that's Apples problem.

Sad :o(

Nothing to do with being anti-Apple my main man,

Most people sincerely don't want to look like a twat carrying one of those shitty iPads around.

And face it, you look like a twat with one.

Think Star Trek, and then think how many Star Trek fans get laid....

apple products are usually twice as heavy compared to their competitors:

iphone 4 = 4.8 oz or 0.3 lbs
cowon j3 = 2.68 oz to 0.167 lbs

i sure hope they reduce that 1.6 lbs in half like 0.8 lbs (which is still too heavy to hold in one hand for long reading duration).

RE: And how about its weigth?
By Motley on 12/23/2010 11:23:25 AM , Rating: 4
Sorry, but the cowon j3 isn't even remotely in the same class as an iPhone 4.

Cowon screen resolution: 480 x 272
iPhone 4 screen resolution: 960x640

Cowon processor speed: 500Mhz
iPhone 4 processor speed: 1GHz

Cowon has no compass, no gps, no app store, and IS NOT A PHONE.

Cowon can't play h.264 videos AT ALL let alone HD videos.

Cowon will only display JPG pictures, no support for PNG, GIF, TIFF. And even JPG's it will only support less than 1M pixel progressive JPGs.

Sorry, but the cowon isn't even close to being a competitor of the iPhone 4. It's more of a competitor to an iPod nano, just bigger, heavier, and more expensive.

cowon j3:
flash and flac support
64 hours of music on one charge
not shackled to itunes
not shackled to apple store approval process
amoled display

it depends on what you're looking for in your device.

$2,000 on contract for 2 years with iphone 4
or $750 no contract...no thanks. if you want a phone you can get a pre-paid phone for free and add in minutes you want.

you seriously watch hd movie on a tiny portable screen? maybe if you hold a magnifying glass over the screen. :)

gps/compass/camera? i see no use for these. so why should i pay for something i'll never use?

go crawl back to your steve jobs cult cave, troll. go find a good apple cult de-programmer so you can finally leave the cult you've been following all these years.

Thats not true.. Not if you are comparing similar form factors.

The Galaxy S which is made of plastic is 4.1 oz, only slightly behind the iPhone.. and thats the lightest smartphone of that size that I've seen.

Seriously, if you have a hard time holding 1.6 pounds you need to get out and exercise more.

/unless you are a waiter and your restaurant is using the device as an order-taking device

You obviously don't own an iPad, but if you do, you might as well have a Nintendo DS because you lack imagination for the opportunities the iPad presents.

Lets see. Access to my calendar, contacts, email is just the start on a device that doesn't require scrolling after reading a sentence. Along with the plethora of information on the web, thanks to cell card.

Built in Cisco IPsec Client coupled with the take your pick of dozens of VNC and RDP clients, enables secure remote administration while I'm at users desktop if I need to make changes.

For our Conference room that don't happen to have PCs, access to a device bigger than 4" in nice to collaborate on impromptu web design meetings where a laptop isn't always handy.

yeah.......just a toy

The iPad is heavy for a reason, and that reason is not going away with a simple redesign..

The battery takes up pretty much all the real estate inside the casing, the pcb is tiny in comparison.

Its a compromise between battery life, and weight.

Whilst I respect you're actually paying attention to the article, and whilst you're actually putting forth a well thought out argument, please try and remember your audience.

Something more along the line of;

"Pfft, I'm surprised those pencil necked iPad owners are even able to carry an iPad. Well I got news for you virgins, you're going to have to lug those heavyweights around in the iPad 2, and don't forget your StevieBoyJobs iButtplug to shove up your ass"

Is far more suitable a comment.

From my understanding, it will ship to Apple in January to fill up the pipeline. It may be late Jan or Feb before the new iPad is announced and it may be March or April before the tablet is available for consumers.

Apple will be faced with many competitors after the first of the year and the iPad will need a refresh to compete.

It won't be out until March/April. May guess is they will show the next version in January like they did last year. Apple has had yearly releases for all of its iOS line products, I don't see why that would change now.

Computer replacement

It would be awesome if they added SD/MicroSD card slot as well. When the manufacturers are able to replace my laptop I will buy me a tablet. As of now, I'm sticking to my Laptop because without SD/USB I cannot transer media or files so I can work while I tavel. If they add a way to print wirelessly thru wifi and USB would be great as well. The key here is to add functionality not just to carry another BIG phone with media and games. If this is where Blackberry is going with their Playpad, they're heading in the right direction.

speakers
By zephyrprime on 12/27/2010 11:18:29 AM , Rating: 2
I'm glad to see that there are now 2 speakers. However, the speaker setup still sucks. Side firing speakers blow. Front firing is the only way to go. Of course, apple being apple, they do not want to put from firing speakers on the thing because it would ruin the clean, minimalist aesthetic of the front of the ipad. :P

The thing about iPads...
By dark matter on 12/29/2010 4:34:35 PM , Rating: 1
Are yes, they are selling well, but there are a heck of a lot of knobs in this world.

Like this morning, I got on the tram, and this lad got his iPad out.

Plenty of girls around him. And you know what, he looked like a dick. An utter nerd.

There are a lot of dickheads in this world, and a lot of nerds. Buy an iPad, you could be either one of them, but trust me, I wouldn't dream of looking like such a twat in a public place. Totally destroys ANY credibility of getting laid.

Peace out.
