Take down notice sent to Engadget for posting new slim PlayStation 3 photographs

Earlier in the month, Engadget posted leaked photographs of what was claimed to be a new slimmed down version of the PlayStation 3 from a factory somewhere in China. The photographs are grainy and you would naturally doubt if the pictures were legitimate.

In an interesting twist, a Chinese company has sent Engadget a takedown notice demanding the pictures be taken down. They were also instructed to keep quiet about the fact they had received a takedown notice. Engadget reacted quickly, posting the contents of the takedown notice on their site for the world to see. Images of the rumored slim PlayStation 3 are still viewable as well.

Although the take down notice was not from Sony, Engadget points out threatening takedown notices for leaked photographs only help to legitimize those photographs.

More recently, Ars Technica’s insider at Sony also confirmed the release of a slim PlayStation 3 is likely in August or September. The Ars Technica article points out the slimmed down version of the PlayStation 3 will most likely not be announced at E3 as Sony is waiting for current generation PlayStation 3s sitting on store shelves to be all sold off first.

The insider also confirmed the upcoming PlayStation Portable with no UMD drive will be officially revealed at E3.

I loved the PS2 Slimline (still own one). I would be interested in purchasing a PS3 Slimline if they got the price down.

agreed... somewhere around the same price point or lower than the 360 would be ideal... plus that would help fuel more console sales, thus more game sales... then a slimmed down 360 at a lower price point... and the battle continues while us consumers enjoy the battle... that is until the $500 PS4, $250 Wii2 and Microsoft neXtbox arrives around late 2010/early 2011...

still doesn't seem real to me

Why would they design the box to have a picture of the ps3 from the top? it doesn't show off it's new "slimness" at all compared to the regular ps3.

It also doesn't make any sense to change the glossy top of the ps3 to a more plastic, granite top, which looks cheaper even if it does pick up less finger prints and dust.

...More lame news.

You apparently missed the "Rumor" part of the title there.

90% of the news in the world isn't confirmed anyway. You should be used to it.

Your 90% statistic is driven by the 90% of modern day journalists who no longer follow established journalistic practices (which includes vetting their story/sources before publication).

That's very true...well, at least 10% of it is. JK

Including treating a blogger as a legitimate news source like a "real" journalist used to be.

All that needs to be done is to attribute any questionable (read: fictional) material to an "analyst"... Tada! Instant credibility!

Actually when I posted my comment there was no "rumor" part of the title.

That is also why it is posted in the Blogs section. You can pretty much put anything in this section, and when it is criticized, just say it is a blog.

I also think DT need a different visual style (may be different BG color) to signify this is a blog section just in case.

Really? How about being responsible and knowing what it is you are clicking on, is that too much to ask these days? Maybe Dailytech could hire someone to announce to you when you are in a blog instead of the news section, and vice versa, that way we can take away all responsibility from the readers part and leave no room for error. Of course, that announcer would need someone to verify his work as well...

On the other hand, there is no doubt that there will be a PS3 slim based on history.
