Manhunt 2 dodges ban in UK

As part of the latest chapter in the most tumultuous game release of the year, Manhunt 2 could soon be seeing the light of day on UK store shelves. Rockstar Games won the right to appeal the decision by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to ban the sale of Manhunt 2 in the UK.

With the overturning of the decision, Rockstar Games could release Manhunt 2 with an age rating of 18+. The BBFC, however, could once again block the sale of the game by contesting the process.

“The BBFC will carefully study the judgement by the Video Appeals Committee when it becomes available,” said David Cooke, director of the BBFC, quoted in the Telegraph. “The BBFC twice rejected Manhunt 2 for its focus on varied and cumulative killings. We recognise that rejection is a very serious step, in which the desire of publishers to market their games, and that of gamers to buy them, must be balanced against the public interest, including the full range of possible harm risks to vulnerable individuals and to any children who may be wrongly exposed to such games.”

Cooke in June explained the reason for the game’s ban: “Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.”

Rockstar modified the contents of Manhunt 2 after being rated “AO” for Adult’s Only for the North American market. The edited “M” for Mature rated game hit North American stores on October 31.

“We are committed to making great interactive entertainment, while also marketing our products responsibly and supporting an effective rating system,” Rockstar Games said in a statement. “We are pleased that the decision of the Video Appeals Committee has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment.”

I've got an idea

How about the UK let people decide for themselves whether the game is too violent? And let parents decide for whether the game is too violent for their kids. I know I'm talking crazy here but it just might work.

Let me also add that I have no interest in buying the game myself. But if I did, I'd expect to have the right to.

Thing is, it's gotten lackluster reviews... and yet all this publicity almost makes me want to buy it anyway (almost).

Tell people they can't have something and they only want it more.

in the world right now there are less psycho's then politicians who've seem to have forgotten this.

Games like Carmagedon or Postal, and i can continue to name others that were realeased that your only purpose was to run people over or kill people/things. Im sorry but leave the decision up to the consumer and dont try to censor me. That being said all this hype just makes me want to buy the game more to shove it right back at them.

Just my Opinion

I have an uncensored copy of Manhunt 2 in addition to an officially released censored version. Grew tired of it a few hours in so I never completed it, but I'd argue that Postal 2 and Carmegedon (both of which I played a lot more than this one because they were better games) were far more violent than Manhunt 2. With Manhunt 2 at least there's a plot. My point- this was all much ado about nothing and if anything the "controversy" has probably helped the sales of a mediocre game that isn't nearly as violent as it's been made out to be.

While I am still undecided on whether or not simulated graphic violence is a danger to our society, I am positive that censorship overwhelmingly imperils us. Come on, UK folks. Don't allow this to happen to you any longer.

But Still Pending:

Rockstar is now appealing to the Republic of Gamers to try to make them want to play their game.
