As part of the latest chapter in the most tumultuous game
release of the year, Manhunt 2 could soon be seeing the light of day on UK store
shelves. Rockstar Games won the right to appeal
the decision by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to ban
the sale of Manhunt 2 in the UK.
With the overturning of the decision, Rockstar Games could
release Manhunt 2 with an age rating of 18+. The BBFC, however, could once
again block the sale of the game by contesting the process.
“The BBFC will carefully study the judgement by the Video
Appeals Committee when it becomes available,” said David Cooke, director of the
BBFC, quoted in the Telegraph.
“The BBFC twice rejected Manhunt 2 for its focus on varied and cumulative
killings. We recognise that rejection is a very serious step, in which the
desire of publishers to market their games, and that of gamers to buy them,
must be balanced against the public interest, including the full range of
possible harm risks to vulnerable individuals and to any children who may be
wrongly exposed to such games.”
Cooke in June explained the reason for the game’s ban:
“Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its
unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which
constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or
distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which
these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.”
Rockstar modified
the contents of Manhunt 2 after being rated
“AO” for Adult’s Only for the North American market. The edited “M” for Mature
rated game hit North American stores on October 31.
“We are committed to making great interactive entertainment,
while also marketing our products responsibly and supporting an effective
rating system,” Rockstar Games said in a statement. “We are pleased that the
decision of the Video Appeals Committee has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well
within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment.”
