Rudimentary robot was able to perform simple surgical procedures without human assistance

Doctors and surgeons already make use of some types of robots to perform procedures where the precision of the operation required is often more than a human can consistently offer. Some researchers say that the day when these robots can perform procedures without the need for humans is closer.

Engineers at Duke University have conducted a feasibility test in the lab that shows fully automated robotic surgical procedures could be possible and the researchers say that the tests could prove beneficial immediately for current medical procedures.

The engineers used a rudimentary tabletop robot that used 3D ultrasound technology for its eyes. The robot also had an intelligence program capable of processing the 3D information coming from the ultrasound sensors and issue specific commands for the robotic arm to perform.

Stephen Smith, director of the Duke University Ultrasound Transducer Group and senior research team member, said in a statement, “In a number of tasks, the computer was able to direct the robot's actions. We believe that this is the first proof-of-concept for this approach. Given that we achieved these early results with a rudimentary robot and a basic artificial intelligence program, the technology will advance to the point where robots – without the guidance of the doctor – can someday operate on people.”

The procedures that the robot performed in the feasibility study included a simulated needle biopsy and the direction of catheters inside synthetic blood vessels. John Whitman, an engineering student in Smith’s lab said, “The robot was able to accurately direct needle probes to target needles based on the information sent by the catheter transducer. The ability of the robot to guide a probe within a vascular graft is a first step toward further testing the system in animal models.”

The simulated needle biopsy had the robot arm introducing a needle into a liquid-filled balloon in a medium designed to simulate tissue. For the catheter test the robot was able to touch the needle on its arm to another needle in a water bath.

Whitman continued saying, “These experiments demonstrated the feasibility of autonomous robots accomplishing simulated tasks under the guidance of 3-D ultrasound, and we believe that it warrants additional study.”

The more immediate benefits of the research according to the scientists could be the addition of 3D ultrasound technology to aid doctors introducing heart catheters. These catheters are guided today under fluoroscopy, which exposes the patient and doctor to radiation. The ultrasound technique would reduce the exposure to radiation compared to traditional methods.

Complete autonomous surgical procedures are very important for saving lives in remote locations both on Earth and in space. NASA is also investigating automated robotic surgical procedures to treat medical emergencies in space.

The doctor...

Oh man I love Star Trek (ever Voyager unlike some people), but the Doctor had to be one of the most annoying characters in the series... Sort of like Data, but way more annoying...

Lowest point in the entire Star Trek series (before Enterprise). Adding a new character to a show just for that is a lazy and half-ass attempt to improve ratings.

I thought so too.

I mean, yeah... huge boobs.. okay. er... who cares if the stories still suck. yeah, I like my girls to be sexy, cure, hot, etc... but I like them with some character development. Look at TV series like the short-lived FireFly which wasn't kiddy like Star Trek. And of course the new Battlestar Galatica turned into a lot better TV show then I expected. When I heard/saw that Starbuck and Boomer were to be "hot girls"... but then I saw the movie/pilot and was blown away.

Actually Voyager started improving with the storylines and quality after 7 of 9 come in.

We all know Deep Space 9 is the worst ever. I cant watch it for more than 5 minutes, even the sets and design of things is second rate.

I have to second Wesley. You have a huge starship (the flagship of the fleet) with many competent officers, and the new kid Wesley is flying the ship. There isn't anybody else on board that already went to the Academy and is way more qualified?

I have to disagree with Troi and slutt of 9, they may not accomplish much, but they must make a great distraction for the crew to get their mind off the weekly trouble each ship finds themselves in.

Troi's only lines: "pain....I sense...pain"

Her mother was awesome though.

Troi's mother was played by Gene Roddenberry's wife.

Given the background storyline that Picard was the one who ordered Wesley's father to his death. And that he still feels guilty about it and yet has to work with Wesley's mother, Beverly Crusher, on a daily basis I think its believable enough that an Ensign with Wesley's high Academy marks could get the helmsman position.

I really can't agree that adding Wesley was the proverbial 'jumping of the shark' in TNG.

Also they just HAD to add Wesley so Beverly could officially be a MILF. Mmmmmmmm.. and she was.

As for Voyager, I think the whole show should've been deep 6'd. I hated that awful show. Rick Berman is no Gene Roddenberry.

I liked Troi, and she wasn't bad looking.
Wesley, meh.

Quark was totally funny, I liked him being there.

And whoever said DS9 was the worst, I disagree. It started off a bit weak, but it had good characters and good story later. Voyager just sucked the whole way, and oddly the only character that wasn't completely one-dimensional from the outset was the computer hologram Doctor, who should have had the least depth, seeing as he was basically a machine. Bangin' of 9 got some depth as she became human again, and looked really hott to boot.

This comment is Win.

You guys are lunatics - Robert Picardo was amazing as the Doctor, and he was one of the saving graces of Voyager.

It sucks that you try to blame the quality of the show on the characters. Any idiot can see that it's Brannon f***ing Braga's fault.

Aside from Kate Mulgrew's ... *spirited* performances, Braga deserves and for the most part gets all the blame for Voyager's glaws. (glaring flaws = glaws).

The holographic doctor isn't really a robot now, is he... I think a better picture would have been that birthing robot in one of the newer Star Wars movies, or the robots that were fixing up Anakin after he got crispy.

While you are correct that the holographic doctor is not a robot, beyond that they are still essentially the same thing. Both are/would be controlled by a computer that is sensing where it is, what it's doing, and reacting accordingly. The only difference is that a robot is directly connected and controlling the moving appendages where as the holographic is a bit more complex. Though that being said, you probably could technically define the holographic doctor as a more sophisticated robot

I'm thinking the stitching machine in Starship Troopers when Rico ends up in that tank of water. I only remember because I just saw it on TV not too long ago.

I really love the Doctor on Voyager. I like it when there was a problem with the ship and he shrink to 2 inches. But no one really cared because it was not a top priority to fix him. Ha Ha ha.

Question: What happens when the robot fu##ks up on a human because someone forgot to recharge his batteries?

In the Future of Robots doing...

- Answering the phone for billings, tech support, ording
- Flying jet fighters and eventually commercial craft
- Fighiting on the ground
- building cars and everything else
- making other computers and robots
- performing medical services
- have sex partner(s)
- cashier and food markets
- taking food orders (Carl's Jr. - last time I was in one was 6 months ago and I TOLD THEM I'D NEVER return to their place with a damn computer touch screen. What COULD have taken 10 seconds with a 16year old girl worker, took about 7 minutes with her trying to show us how to use the two stupid machines with customers)

... what jobs will be left for people to WORK to make money to BUY these things or get service? If all we need to do is breed, party and eat.. how do we pay for these things? Why go to school for an education if a robot is going to do it for you?

I think we humans become nothing more than idiots.

Your forget... that while it is true that a computer/robot/machine can do the things you stated and more, they can never imagine. They can never aspire to do more then then what they are programmed with or adapt themselves to a situation as incredibly as a human can.

Not Impressed
By HighWing on 5/8/2008 1:42:35 PM , Rating: 2
Ok so maybe I'm a bit jaded from all the robot and media news, but this really doesn't impress me. I know what robots are capable of doing, and to me this falls under the realm of what our current tech could easily do. What really makes this unimpressive is the fact that it is only a proof of concept test down on a non-living object. A real person, or animal, will be breathing which creates slight body movements, and also there is always the possibility of something going horribly wrong which could then cause the body to jerk in random directions. Once they get a robot that can cope/adjust to that, then I would be impressed. Otherwise, to me this seems more like just another highly accurate robot moving objects around a table.
