Apple says demand for the iPad 3 has been "off the charts"

The hype for new Apple products is not unlike teenage girls crying while waiting in line to see a cheesy pop artist, and it looks like that enthusiasm is as alive as ever with the upcoming iPad 3.

The iPad 3, which was announced at an Apple event in San Francisco, California by Apple CEO Tim Cook earlier this month, will officially launch on March 16. However, new reports say all pre-order iPad 3 stock has been sold, and that March 19 is the earliest ship date for online orders. According to TG Daily, new orders could even take as long as three weeks to fulfill.

"Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased," said Apple in a statement. "Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."

The iPad 3 features a 2048x1536 resolution, 9.7-inch display, the A5X processor with a dual-core CPU and quad-core GPU, a rear-facing 5 MP iSight camera, LTE radio and 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB options. There's a Wi-Fi only version and a 4G LTE compatible version that runs on Verizon and AT&T 4G networks.

Customers who want an iPad 3 on launch day will have to make their way to an Apple store or some other brick-and-mortar store that sells iPads.

It's not uncommon for Apple's latest gadgets to sell out for pre-order shortly before the release. Last fall, iPhone 4S pre-orders sold out at AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, which are the three largest U.S. carriers. The iPhone even went on to crush Google's Android in U.S. Q4 sales, outselling Android-based phones 4-to-1 on AT&T and outselling all Android phones combined at Verizon.

This is only the third iPad, you realize?

Most Apple fans buying multiple iPads aren't in fact expecting different results, else they wouldn't be repeat buyers.

The insane people are those who keep switching products because they products they buy don't meet their needs; Palm to WM to RIM to Android would be an example.

You have that backwards. A rational person buys a new product to replace an old because they're expecting different results. The person switching from Palm to WM to RIM to Android is trying to find the product which best meets his needs.

If you buy a product and it meets your needs, you don't go out buying a newer product. You keep using the old one. My car is 12 years old and I'm still using it because it suits my needs just fine. The only improvement it could use is a built-in MP3 player, and I'm not going to spend $25k on a new car ($35k - $10k trade-in) for that. Same for my DSLR - it's from 2008 and has all the features I need as a photographer.

Insanity is buying a newer product not expecting different results. The product you already own is working just fine and does everything you want, yet you still buy the new one. What's happening there is that the need being fulfilled isn't a functional one. It's the need to have the latest and greatest new shiny. It (by your own admission) doesn't generate different results, so it doesn't improve your productivity, which means it is a net negative drag on the economy.

People buying a new iPad expect the same qualities, but different results.

For example, they expect the reliability, excellent design, battery life, wide selection of apps, user friendly device, long term software support.

They also expect improvements in performance, quality of screen, connection speed, camera, and software.

The Einstein quote doesn't apply because they aren't repeating the same thing (they are buying different devices).

I would imagine that the majority of the pre-orders are not returning customers but new ones who can now afford an iPad due to many things that happened (like a better paying job) since the first gen iPad was released.

How is this the same thing? Simply because it looks similar? Different GPU, CPU, double the screen resolution, different version of the OS, different camera, etc. If this sounds like buying the exact same product all over again I think you would have to classify any person who has EVER replaced their phone, notebook, or desktop as an insane person.

Don't let my logic get in the way of your anti-Apple circle jerk though.

The screen is the most significant upgrade IMHO. I've always felt that 1024x768 on a 9.7" screen was too low a resolution. I tried displaying my sheet music on it and it looked like cr@p. I stuck with my almost-decade-old 1.5" thick tablet with a 1400x1050 12.1" screen for displaying sheet music. So for someone like me it'd be a worthwhile reason to upgrade. I'm still waiting for a 12"+ tablet though.

It'll be curious though to see how many of the legions of Apple fans will now do a flip-flop. Before when the iPad had the worst dpi of any tablet, it was "good enough" and thus high dpi wasn't an important factor when choosing a tablet. Now that it will have the highest dpi, I suspect they'll proudly proclaim it as a good reason to get a iPad over other tablets. Same thing as happened with the iPad 2's thinness - it was chique and a reasons the iPad 2 was better, until other thinner tablets came out and suddenly it wasn't important anymore.

Buy the device which best suits your needs. Don't retroactively change your needs to suit the device you bought.

Let me start off buy saying I have never purchased a Mac. I am personally not a big fan of Steve Jobs or the way he does business. I think he is genius with the fanbase he has created.

That being said. I have and always will be a PC man FOR LIFE. I own 2 Toshiba Laptops, 1 Sony Laptop, 3 HP Laptops, 2 Dell laptops, and an HP Desktop(I run a DJ business thats why I own that many.

I own every iPhone made and the 2nd gen iPad. I don't need it but I want the 1st gen iPad and now the 3rd gen iPad. Everyone has a vice. I am a tech junkie and have piles and piles of useless stuff I never use. Some of which I out of no where find a use for. Is the iPad 3 a huge disappointment? Absolutely. Is it dumb they are just calling it "the new iPad?' Yes! Sadly, I am still going to buy it. Much like I will buy tickets for and/or any DVD release of Star Wars. PS I hate George Lucas. lol

They are as low as $299 now for a refurb, pretty easy to cough up $299 if you make $50k. It's not a matter of affordability, it's spending habits, some people are better and managing their assests then others and are able to afford an iPad. By this principle, most of the American public wouldn't have an iPad because of affordability, however, most of the country does have at least one PC so it's a matter of desire/ needing a tablet for computing, etc.

I think what I don't understand is the why? I bought a touchpad during the firesale, and even then I could barely justify the cost. I use it to take notes in class, and sometimes to browse the web. I can't see using it for much else, for games I'll just use my phone because its more convenient or my laptop because it has better games, and for any real work I always use my laptop (I have ICS on the touchpad, so apps isn't an issue). I don't even use it for reading because my kindle's e-ink screen is so much nicer for reading.I know lots of people that have them but all they really use them for is words with friends and facebook (which I do on my phone). Its a serious question though, what do people use them for that justifies the $500-800 cost.

If its important to you, then you make the time and money for it. If its not important to you then you don't. Obviously an iPad / tablet isn't important to you.

Don't worry, its important to me, or a lot of other people, either.

They aren't that expensive. I just think, for what they are, they are overpriced. I don't feel the functionality justifies the cost. It is, after all, just a tablet.

The cost of being "cool" actually has gone down. Before these idiots had to buy MacBook Air's for their coolness accessory. Now they get away with paying less than a third of a MacBook for an iPad. Progress!

However we've all seen this before. It's the next thing from Apple, people will find a way to buy one every year, bla bla bla.

I've been wondering the same thing... as well as "Whyyyyyy?"

This iPad isn't much different from the 2, so why is it back ordered by 3 weeks? Just seems like people are throwing away their money en mass for little return in value (surely not worth >$500 compared to the 2). Maybe it's that "something new!" psychology, and now they are addicts to the rush of a new purchase like that.

Is there anything you could post to help me eat at a dollar a day? I am relatively close on the other things you mentioned, but I probably spend 5-10 dollars a day on food... I'd love to spend 1-2...

$1 a day for food is ridiculous. You would probably just get that if you ate rice every day and that was it. You'd also not be able to go out and eat either.

Well, taxes might be higher than $5k. I got taxes down that low because I was putting 16% of my income into a 401k. At that calculation, you are losing another $8k to a 401k and your taxable income drops to $42k.

But yes, food on a dollar a day is 4 servings of beans and rice. 25 pounds of rice is $20, assorted beans, dry, about $2/pound so say you have another 25 pounds of beans for $50. That's $70. for a year's worth of food. For refreshment let's say you drink milk. $4 a gallon, a gallon a week, is $208, leaving you with an additional $87 budget. You can get concentrated vanilla or strawberry, at $15 for a whole year's worth, to spice up your milk. Salt, sugar, and pepper eat up another $20 for a year's worth (if you don't overseason), leaving you with $1 a week to spend on your choice of tomatoes or cheese or whatever spices you need.

The point is that you can in fact choose to spend a lot less than $5-$10 a day on food. Even $5 a day on food is less than $2k a year, and that only decreases your discretionary spending by $1.5k; the 401k is the bigger deal, which decreases your discretionary spending to $22k.

Try 25% in taxes if you make $50K. My wife and I get it down to about 20% by giving a lot away and putting it in 401K and HSAs, but if you're going after discretionary income those don't help any.

RE: $$$?
By michael2k on 3/12/2012 5:01:06 PM , Rating: 2
25%? IRS says anything under $70.7k is 15%:

So if you're earning $51k and you sock away 16% into a 401k you already have reduced your taxable income to $43k. Apply the standard deduction and you get down to $37k taxable income, not counting money already deducted for social security etc. 15% of $37k is $5.55k, which is only 10.88% of the original $51k.

My first statement, 10%, was ballpark. Had I done the math I would have said 11%. Even if you don't use a 401k, the 15% of $51k minus the $6k standard deduction would only be $6.75k, or 13.23%. Both are considerably lower than 25% or 20%.

I also didn't factor in utilities such as water and power; but generally water is about $20 or so a month and power could be about $80 depending on how you live, so that's another $1.2k out (for $20.8k in discretionary after $8k in 401k)

If it's worth it to you, you can afford to buy it.

On $60k a year, I rented a $1400/month apartment and was paying down a new car at $600/month (4yr financing). Most months I was able to put about $1k into the car (paid it off in 25 months instead of 48), and I was still able to save money.

If you can't come up with $500 out of a $50k salary (for anything, not just an iPad), *and* you're single/no kids, you might want to sit down and see if you're over-extending yourself on things that don't add value.

- How much are you paying for your cell phone? A family plan, per person, can be about $50/person assuming you have parents/siblings you can split with. $100/month for one line, regardless of phone, always seemed ridiculous to me. ($50/month savings, $600/yr)

- How much are you paying for cable? Depending on where you are, $30-60/month can get you broadband service, do you really need the 800 channels of crap that's on TV that's costing you an extra $40/month? ($40/month savings, $480/yr)

- What's the deductible on your car? Going from a $500 deductible to a $1k deductible can save you $200 (or more) every six months. ($200/six months, $400/yr)

- How much do you spend drinking? $6/beer adds up. Cut out one beer a weekend, and you're saving about $25/month ($300/yr)

- Is your AC running at 72F when you're out of the house in the summer? Turn it up to 80F (or off) when you're gone, you can save $50-100/month for the 3-4 months where you need it ($200/yr, let's call it).

There, I just found $1980 (post tax) out of a lot of peoples' budgets. That's nearly a domestic vacation for two (one week of hotels and flights), a nice gaming rig, a sweet laptop, or four iPads. Or an additional $2k that you can put into savings.

No kidding! (pun intended), I didn't realize how much 'extra' money I used to have that now goes into the kids.

To me, $500 is perfectly reasonable for a device like this. $500 is an easy amount to justify. The issue is that I currently have a 3G 32gb iPad that is always out of storage space and I use it probably 20-30 hours a week. I would pay something solely for the new display, but I really 'need' to have the 64gb 4G version. Now it is $829 which is too much, $729 and I will still be out of space and for my uses will be paying that money for a nearly identical product, but with a better display. That's hard to justify, especially on top of the $729 that I paid two years ago.

I have considered selling the iPad 1, but for what it is worth, I would rather give it to my daughter who currently uses it when I don't have it with me.

I guess even then, assuming the hardware lasts 2 years it costs less than the data plan that goes with it.

Best tablet on the market
By tayb on 3/12/2012 5:23:30 PM , Rating: 2
I don't see a better tablet offering on the market.

The screen resolution, GPU, camera, and iCloud are all in a class of their own. The CPU is not a quad core but I'm not sure any end user would ever notice the difference. The OS feels a bit dated now but it works, for now, and iOS 6 should be out within the next 6 months.

As a current iPad (generation 1) owner there is not enough of an incentive for me to upgrade but if I was in the market for a tablet I don't see any better offerings at this price point. I think I'll wait to see what comes of Windows 8 tablets before I replace this one.
