Has the RTM build of Windows 7 just leaked?

As predicted, the 7600 Build of Windows 7 was reportedly released on July 13.  Also as predicted, soon thereafter it was swiftly leaked out onto torrent sites.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads of the new OS of the Ultimate edition were being actively hosted at press time.  There is some question about whether the build is indeed the Release to Manufacturing build as rumored.  This would mean that it would be almost the exact version of Windows 7 to appear on store shelves this fall, barring the discovery of a major bug in the RTM phase.

While the 7600 build made indeed be the build to see RTM, it may be the wrong version of the 7600 build.  I Started Something blogger Long Zheng was the first to discover the build string -- "7600.16384.0907101945_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso".  Some are noting that the RTM build of Windows Vista was 16386, indicating that two more compilations might be in store before the official RTM.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the leak.  However, the build appears to be legitimate and almost, if not exactly, feature-identical to the RTM release.

The 7600 build wasn't the only Microsoft product to be leaked as Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WWPC) kicked off in New Orleans.  A technical preview of the new version of Microsoft Office -- Office 2010 -- also hit torrents.

This is to be expected.

You'd have to be living under a rock not to expect this to happen.

Precisely.
And in other irrelevant news, the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.

And to take a note from most US economic news of late:

"The sun will rise from the east tomorrow... more on time than expected."

My question is, are the key codes working from the RC? Wouldn't Microsoft just black ball those the day of release? If they were smart they would offer an license through the OS on that day. Then mail the you the packaging.

No. You will need to pay to get a key.

Then wouldn't the RTM be none functional after 30 days? There would be no reason to download this...

Tim, I can see you're not experience in this matter. How it works is that there will be a hack/crack shortly after the leaked so people could start using it illegally. 30 days is enough time for someone or some group to work around the protection.

Yep, pretty much. Personally, I will do that myself, being honest on the matter, because I bought Windows Vista pre-loaded on two of my PC's and bought a key for my other PC, and I am not paying another 300 dollars for Windows 7.

CRACKALACKA! As they say!

Well for us TechNet/MSDN members we can use for 30 days w/o activation and get keys (hopefully) before the end of the month.

For others, I'm sure an activation crack probably isn't far away.

Is this being released to MSDN too? I don't see it yet under OS downloads.

No.

If Win 7 is really RTM, I'd expect Ballmer to announce it during his speech at WWPC tomorrow (Tuesday). Business with SA are supposed to get it by the end of July, so I would suspect that MSDN/Technet subscribers will get it then as well.

As DigitalFreak said, MSDN/TechNet rumoured to get RTM by the end of July. What I meant in my post, and what some of my friends are (foolishly imo) doing, is download the leaked RTM, install w/o activation and once keys show up on MSDN/TechNet activate then.

If you're just testing the OS and have no real data on it then who cares just put the key in and if it's late just reinstall.

There's also rearm if one really cares.

Just because a single build may have “leaked” it does not signal the completion of a milestone such as RTM. As always, don’t believe everything that you read on the Internet - except this post ;-).

The next version of Windows I buy will be released in 64-bit, and only 64-bit. No more of this driver lottery about whether there will be a 64-bit driver released for products X, Y, or Z. Tell that to your friends in Redmond.

Wouldn't that be 452 more complications prior to RTM?

I did not saw the spelling error until you pointed it out. I've read 16386.
Now I'm not sure if you really meant complications instead of compilations.

This has not been confirmed

This release has not been confirmed, everyone just thinks it is RTM because of the big jump in build numbers. An MS spokesperson has already stated that it is not RTM, although they tend to do that right before an up and comming announcement. In other words if you are waiting for RTM, I would wait on this build.

Yeah the rumor is they'll make revisions and change the digits after 7600.

Heres their offical response-

I’d like to offer up a little insight into the “Release to Manufacturing” (RTM) for Windows 7.

Over the past week, there have been many rumors surrounding RTM.

We are close, but have not yet signed off on Windows 7. When we RTM you will most certainly hear it here. As we’ve said all along, we will RTM Windows 7 when it’s ready. As previously stated, we expect Windows 7 to RTM in the 2nd half of July.

Windows 7 will be available in many languages from around the world. For us to consider RTM “done”, it requires that all languages be completely finished. So there is a lot of work that needs to take place for us to finalize all languages of Windows 7. We also need to get to a point of “global readiness” with our partners. Our partners being ready for Windows 7 is extremely important to RTM. As Steven Sinofsky mentions in this blog post in May, RTM isn’t a single point in time. It’s the beginning of the next “process” for Windows 7. At RTM our partners begin their final preparations for Windows 7, including testing and building images for new PCs. RTM is essentially the final “stage” of engineering for Windows 7 before it hits the market at General Availability (GA). As Steven notes, engineering continues on Windows 7 from RTM until GA on October 22nd.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when we do a specific build internally of Windows 7 we have an extensive step-by-step validation process to ensure quality. This process takes time. Just because a single build may have “leaked” it does not signal the completion of a milestone such as RTM.

As always, don’t believe everything that you read on the Internet - except this post ;-).

Aren't both x86 and x64 suppose to be on the same disc?
By T2k on 7/16/2009 12:11:23 PM , Rating: 2
I remember reading something about universal install disc... but even if I am mistaking something since W7 license is universal - at least if you buy from the MS Store via download you get universal access, you can choose between x86 and x64 when installing - so it would make perfect sense to ship a universal disc, I think.

I downloaded it, burned the disc and found a Trojan, Oh well!

Build number theory
By stevekgoodwin on 7/15/2009 3:28:51 AM , Rating: 2
Maybe the 16384 portion of the build number is a set of flags. It's a suspiciously neat binary number. 16386 is just one bit off.

16384=0x4000
16386=0x4002

This also ties in with the term "build" -- using a sub-build number to indicate quality/paperwork status allows everyone at MS to know what the status of the build really is.

When the build is approved by SteveB or BillG they'll check the box in their build management tool and rebuild the system using exactly the same source code as 16384.
