Video game industry suffered yet another setback in July, with sales dropping 29 percent

The recession caused the U.S. video game market to shrink for a fifth-straight month, marking the continued struggle as game studios and console manufacturers attempt to generate sales.

"While year-to-date results are weak, there are some big titles set to be released over the next several months, including 'Madden' this month, which should help spur sales," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement.

The game market shrank 29 percent down to $848.9 million in July, according to NPD, with Nintendo Wii game sales dropping 55 percent, Sony PlayStation 3 sales slipping 46 percent and the Microsoft Xbox 360 console sales falling just 1 percent.  Despite June's sales figures dropping 31 percent over 12 months, industry insiders were still relieved that sales numbers totaled $1.17 billion.

"In order for the industry to come in flat or slightly up for the total year, the back five months of the year have to come in 11 percent (or more) higher than the last five months of last year," Frazier also noted in the report.

When looking at the current trends of the video game industry, it seems highly unlikely it'll be at least 11 percent higher than the last five months of 2008.

It's unknown if the video game industry will have to face continued struggles over the next few months leading into the holiday shopping season, but at least one analyst believes there will be a turnaround in the immediate future.

"I think the silver lining is, we're in the trough of the decline," according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pacter.  "The bottom is worse than I thought, but I'm certain we've hit bottom."

July's lackluster sales will add pressure on Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to cut prices on their consoles.  Sony has denied a price cut is in the works, but not making a move if its competitors slash prices would not be wise, analysts warn.

Is the xbox really selling that well?
By BigToque on 8/14/2009 8:37:33 AM , Rating: 3
In my group, I know of 5 PS3's, 2 360's and at least 10 Wii's. The Wii's seem to be collecting dust, both 360's had the RRoD (I was able to fix one of them though), and the PS3's seem to be played pretty consistently.

Everyone I ever talk to seems to mention the RRoD when talking about the 360, but all the data says that it's selling really well.

Are the games really that good?

I've got about 10 games for the PS3 with a few good ones to come and I'm quite happy with my PS3.

Most people I know have 360s and Wiis. I don't know of anyone who owns a PS3 personally. I own a 360 but it's collecting dust as I mostly game on my PC. I was going to get a PS3 for Final Fantasy XIII, but it looks like that is unnecessary now.

I own all three consoles. I own 65 360 games, 8 PS3 games, 1 Wii game. 360 gets the bulk of gameplay but did people just think that when the economy went into the tank 500,000 plus people a month loosing jobs, businesses closing, auto industry going sour, did people just think that the gaming industry would not suffer, too? If you are having issues paying the mortgage or other bills, putting food on the table, buying games are going to be at the bottom of your list. Even with the news, the videogame industry could be alot worse than it is, plus there were very few great software to buy anyways. Madden will change things alittle this month, though, & with the rumored console price drops, along with the holiday season starting things should be looking up for the industry.

Everyone I know with Kids owns a Wii.
Those same people with Kids nearly all those kids have a DS.
I know one person with a PS3 uses it for BLU-RAY.
The Adults I know are PC gamers.
The neighborhood Teenagers all have 360's (I haven't heard of any of them with RROD issues. But I know of one case and Microsoft replaced the unit for him and no repeat issues)

Of those above the DS's win hands down.

Since the Netflix deal and Natal (Probably next year) a few of us are getting 360's for X-Mas this year.

Wii has won the last 2-3 years but its losing its appeal they should have released the Wii2 or whatever its called this year.

As for July Video Game Sales Down 29% - I dont recall anyone talking about new games. I agree Madden seems to be the talk.

3-5 that owns PSP, including myself and not getting use. I actually use mine as a PMP lol

Although I've expected and wanted the Wii to succeed from the beginning it's success is still very surprising. Even more is that families and different age groups like grandma and grandpa are using it. That is just simply amazing.

Yes, for those without disposable income out there, I doubt they will be concerned about getting new video games. However, for those who still have jobs, but are a little weary about spending it going on a weekend getaway or to the movies may settle on getting a new video game instead.

Video games offer a great value if they have replayability. Some games will keep you playing for weeks, months or even years...decades?(starcraft) for only $50-$60. That's like going to the movies twice.

I still believe the biggest issue is not the economy, it's just that all the good games are set to release at the end of this year, or next year. While great games don't typically get released right before summer, there is usually a trickle down effect from games released from January through March/April.

I can't think of any AAA titles that were released this year, besides maybe Sims 3? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree, & even more of us that have spending income, that has jobs as a result of the economy are more frugal as a gamer than I was a few years ago & my 401k lost nearly 1/2 of it's volume. I now Gamefly almost all my games & buy from them cause Madden for the 360 & PS3 at Best Buy today is $60, but I will get it from Gamefly for $44-10(discount). I think gamers are probably now renting more, instead of just blindly buying new games. I now think about putting away more money & wasting less on games, putting more into my daughters college fund, & paying off debt.

I'm another person who owns all 3 consoles. I initially bought the Xbox 360 since I was a big fan of the original Xbox. My wife won the PS3 in my company's poker tournament. Then, she really wanted a Wii after playing her brother's so I got her one as an anniversary gift. Overall, I/we play the Xbox 360 the most, followed by the Wii and the PS3 last. We have a decent amount of games for the Xbox and Wii, but really only use the PS3 for playing Blu Ray movies or a handful of PS2 games. I don't see anything exciting on the PS3 that I don't already have or can get for the Xbox. Despite the criticism, I don't think the Wii is a bad system. There are some good games for it, but most of them happen to come from Nintendo. The Xbox RROD situation is really sad and embarrassing for MS. Mine got the RROD, but I was able to fix it with the X-Clamp replacement. I think the main reason the Xbox is doing so well is because of Xbox Live and its great game lineup. I know a lot of people at my company got the Xbox just because others were getting it and playing on XBL. As far as the drop in video game spending, well I think it's pretty damn obvious. We are in a recession and there's been a serious lack of great games since at least the beginning of the year. It will pick up in the fall.

I haven't seen a PS3 ever in action, I've had my 360 for a few years now, 6 weeks to the day I got it, The Wireless controllers stopped being able to sync with it, got the machine back a few weeks later and never had an issue since then, my console isn't a Jasper, so it's not as reliable as the recent models, but It's been pretty smooth sailing for me.

From a pure games stand point the 360 offered me more and better options, sure the accessories are expensive, but most games that are Cross-platform look and perform the same, or slightly better on the 360.
Rarely does the reverse seem hold true, it's interesting though how much the PS3's price is over the 360 (Just the stock machine), and how little there is in terms of graphics quality.

Then you have the exclusives, because the PS3 has come last in total console sales and it's low game attachment rate, developers are looking to either:
1) Go exclusive on another console.
2) Multi-Platform.

For Instance the only reason I would have got a PS3 would have been for Final Fantasy, Little Big Planet and Metal Gear Solid, However Final Fantasy will be coming to the 360 along with Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Leaving only little big planet, which I am not going to buy a PS3 just for a single game, despite it being one of the best Blue-Ray players on the market.

Then you have the Online side of things, Xbox Live! is a much more mature and better performing platform in general, gamers are also allot more active on Xbox Live! (Well you would hope so, considering the amount of Xbox Live! users equals the total amount of PS3's sold!) So finding matches are easier, and you have a better chance of getting into less laggier matches. ~ However you do have to pay for it, which some people are a bit iffy about.

Part of the issue of the games not selling well currently is because... The lack of decent Block-buster titles.
Let's see what happens when: Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, Modern Warfare 2, Guitar Hero 5, Assassins Creed 2, The Next Need for Speed are released. ~ It's been pretty dry lately.

I think the reason is that most companies port games and for console users is was not worth adding in extra graphical appeal for 1 console that was harder to code for. Just port it strait over and be done with it getting your sales. But technically the PS3 should be more powerful once again in life its not always the case. Practical issues come to play. Like many thing they probably design the game for the lowest system they will run it on then just port it to the others.

This is false. I've owned both systems and played the same exact game side by side. The 360 doesn't offer the better graphics quality.

In fact I can visually see alot of texture compression during gameplay on a few 360 games (Gears of War anyone?).

From my information, the metal gear solid: rising game isn't going to be the same as the metal gear solid series on PS.

More and more games are being released cross platform. The only real exclusive games "worth owning" are FPS on the 360...I'd much rather leave that genre to a mouse/keyboard than an uncomfortable controller with thumbsticks...thank you.

I never stated "All games" - But there are a heck of allot of Cross-platform games where the 360 does have a lead on the PS3 in terms of visual quality and frame rates, although it's never anything "Massive" - Both systems look very much alike with the games they run.

An example would be the Arcade game "Battlefield 1943" - The Xbox 360's terrain has much better landscape and texture detail.

In Carbon, the 360 has better Lighting and HDR effects than the PS3, although the PS3 has the better texture quality.

In Assassins Creed I found the Xbox 360 to have slightly Sharper ground textures, although both machines look fairly identical, and you probably wouldn't notice it while playing.

I do allot of reading on "Graphics comparisons" to satisfy my curiosity, I usually disregard the annoying comparisons where one console has it's brightness/colour settings not correctly adjusted and look at the "Finer details" instead.

Looks great on my 720P LCD TV using HDMI, no artifacts of any sort, and the texture compression really isn't that noticeable for me.

It's more like a Branch-off from Metal Gear Solid 2, Still the MGS series was always rubbed in the Xbox community's faces, and now it's pay back! xD

Some non "Exclusive" non-fps 360 games are: Viva Pinata, Forza, StarOcean: The Last Hope, Halo Wars, Fable 2, Banjo-Kazooi: nuts and bolts, Tenchu Z, Ninja Gaiden 2.

You could always go the older cheaper games like: Kameo, The 2 Exclusive Naruto games Rise of a Ninja and The Broken Bond.

All in all there are 177 Exclusive Xbox 360 games that aren't available on any other platforms (PC included) and that includes the Arcade games as well.

Alot of us own both consoles & alot of the cross platform games do infact perform better on the 360, but honestly it comes down your preference as alot of the cross platform games are the same or just minor differences, & of course 360 games have to be compressed compared to the PS3 due to the fact that DVD holds at most 7gigs, & blu ray holds about 50gigs of data, but to me where the 360 distances itself from the PS3 is it's online functionality, & ease of use. Like I said I own both, don't pull for one over the other & graphically the consoles are close of course slight edge going to the PS3, but being able to display better visuals doesn't make a console better as both the Cube & Xbox was more powerful than the PS2. The thread is about the decline in the videogames industry not which console is better.

By wempa on 8/14/2009 3:32:53 PM , Rating: 2
OK, so even if games on the Xbox 360 don't look better than their PS3's counterpart, they certainly don't look any worse. So, if you can play the same game on either system, why pay the extra money for the PS3 unless you want Blu Ray ? Ignoring BR, you're getting comparable gaming systems.

By kellehair on 8/14/2009 12:43:30 PM , Rating: 2
That's one strange group. The PS3 is obviously not that popular amongst the population as a whole. I love my PS3 (as a BD player) but I just noticed the other day that I only have 1 exclusive game for it (MGS4, which I've never actually played).

So big game releases have been few and far between. The Wii phenomenon is starting to die down (plus it's more of a casual gaming system, and many of the popular games have a high replay rate). The console prices haven't really moved in many months, and the economy in general is down.

Is anyone really surprised that game sales are down last month and in general?

I love news stories like this. Let's state the completely obvious like it was unexpected and shocking. Next up water is wet, the sky is blue, and the sun is bright. News at 11.

I figured more than one person was going to bring that up. I haven't bought a PS3 game since December last year (Motorstorm Pacific Rift) and haven't bought a PC game since January (L4D). Fortunately there are some new good titles coming down the pipe for all platforms from Sept.-Dec.

I look forward to the NFS - dunno if I'll buy it for the PS3 or the PC, but from what I've been reading lately, the newer games are console developed and then PC ported, which usually sucks. I'm still racing with the 2 year old game GTR2 on PC, and freeware mods & add-ons keep that racing sim fresh.

Yeah... been saying this for months. There has been garbage as far as PC gaming for easily the past year. I cannot think of a "must have" game that was released in the past 12 months for PC.

Honestly, this is the first summer in years I actually have a tan. Last week, I even read a book!

Dont they even count PC game sales anymore??? I am sure they are down, but with Dragon Age, Modern Warfare 2 and Starcraft 2 (eventually)coming surely there will be an uptick in PC sales at some point. Also the MMO The Old Republic, but I refuse to play it, as much as I wanted another KOTOR single player RPG.

To me the XBox has the best selection of games and the console is cheaper. I think the Wii in finally running its course. It was a fun novelty for a while, but eventually one needs really compelling titles and strong online play, not just casual and fitness games.

Well, I think PC sales are down as well. This past year the only things I've bought have been during Steam weekend deals where the games are 50% or more off, all of them for 5.00 - 20.00 at most.

It is funny, but even one that was not on sale - Mass Effect, was 20.00 on Steam but 40.00 in the store. Which version do you think I bought? I saved the 20 bucks so I could take the wife out to the movies.

The biggest problem with quantifying PC game purchases is that a lot of them are being made online nowadays within outlets that don't fully disclose the figures.

I am sure they do but I think they measure how many consoles are sold, how many games are sold for these consoles, cause you can't ttack how many PC's get sold that people may buy just for gaming, or what types of upgrades PC owners make just for gaming purposes, so I think they use the consoles as a barometer as the health of the gaming industry plus to me, PCs & console market are like apples to oranges but the PC elite's always get peeved anytime any console topic comes up & have to come & show how superior the PC is to consoles, 1920x1080, other technical babble that most don't care about, when many of us choose to game on consoles & have nice PCs, but prefer gaming on consoles.

PS3 Only
By IcePickFreak on 8/14/2009 5:28:57 PM , Rating: 2
I only have a PS3, and own only 2 games for it. I picked the unit up a few days after GTA IV came out, although at the time I wasn't even aware of it. I spotted it as I was walking out of the store and picked it up, but haven't played it in probably a year. The other one is GT4 prologue, that I play every now and again. That said, it gets used almost daily for either DVD's (it does a great job at upscaling) or BR (works great with HD audio formats). I haven't even looked at games for it in probably a year, however I haven't regretted the purchase one bit.

That said, I think they need to interpolate declining sales with the declining quality. Again I'm not too up to date on console games, but when is the last time anything original has come along? They've been milking the FPS genre for far too long IMO without adding anything new to it.

How many games do we need in FPS style?
where the heck are the 4 player coop same screen games that we can play with friends and family?
this is not counting sports games.
even some sports games only have 2 player same screen, what happened to 4 players at once? how lame

the original xbox had more 4 player coop titles then the 360. how sad is that.

Deflationary Economics
By lightfoot on 8/14/2009 1:00:40 PM , Rating: 2
It is not suprising that Sony has had such a sales fall off. There have been rumors of a price cut for months, so everyone is in a wait and see mode.

Microsoft too will have horrible sales this month due to the recent price cut leak that they had. Microsoft is now committed to a price cut, and Sony will need to do the same.

In this economy as prices drop consumers expect them to continue dropping, therefore they hold off on purchases, and the reduced demand then forces the price cuts that had been expected, which causes consumers to expect further price cuts and further hold off purchases... And that's how deflation happens.
