Leaked images of HP's bodacious Pavilion HDX shown on the web

When it comes to leaked Santa Rosa notebooks, Notebook Italia has been on the ball. The publication leaked five new Santa Rosa notebooks from Asus last week and another two Asus gaming notebooks today. The Italian publication has another whopper of a leak today with the Hewlett-Packard Pavilion HDX.

As is the case with just about all new notebooks announced recently, the Pavilion HDX will be based on Intel's new Santa Rosa platform. It also has an enormous pivoting 20" widescreen display to back it up and according to Notebook Italia, the Pavilion HDX is the first offspring from the HP-Voodoo PC alliance.

When it comes to processing power and features, the Pavilion HDX will have it all. The unit will be powered by a Core 2-based processors while graphics duties will be handled by a GeForce Go 8000 Series GPU. Given the size of the notebook, there is ample room for four integrated speakers along with an HP Bass Reflex subwoofer. The notebook is also large enough to accommodate a full-size keyboard and an integrated media remote control.

The Pavilion HDX will also feature an ATSC/NTSC tuner onboard and HDMI out. There is still no word on what optical drive will be used by the Pavilion HDX, but expect to see either a Blu-ray or HD DVD unit onboard. Expect to see the Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN Draft-N network adapter, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, GbE, an integrated webcam, Intel Turbo Memory 2.0 (formally known as Robson) and Windows Vista Ultimate.

There is no release date posted yet for the 12-pound notebook, but expect to see more details leaked for the massive notebook in the coming weeks.

Maybe for us overweight Americans it can still be called a "laptop" though. Who am I kidding, though, we're too out of shape to carry 20 extra pounds. :)

Snarky comments aside, I'd call it a Lanparty/countertop to countertop computer.

Actually only 12 pounds, though still heavy.

Power supply, mouse, mousepad, bag of potato chips... It all adds up! :D If all the gaming essentials are there, 20 pounds isn't unthinkable! And I didn't even factor in a bottle of Coke! :)

The power brick may well weigh over 2 lb, plus a sturdy backpack ~3-5 lb, plus mouse, mousemat, and a couple of games for maybe the last pound. 20 lb shoulder weight isn't inconceivable. A 500ml bottle of coke would add about another pound if we are pushing.

I wonder how big the power supply is going to be.

Come on, 20" screen = 100watts alone, not including the four integrated speakers and a...let me get this right: sub-woofer?

I've seen Toshiba's with integrated sub-woofers, and they're like 3.5" drivers that are paper thin, but even those are probably 15-watts RMS.

This thing is going to be a power hog. That raises a number of concerns about reliability and heat (not in the laptop, but the power bridge and the brick itself.) Might even best the XBOX360 brick!

I'd bet the powersupply will weigh in around 2 pounds...

I've used some HP Pavilion laptops P4(desktop CPU) and C2D before... powersupply was pretty hefty...

um my dell 2005fpw doesnt use anywhere near 100watts. sorry bud, i dont think 20inch WS use that much power

maybe im missing something, but what's the "remote" part in an integrated "remote control"?
i hope it pops out and can be used... you know... remotely, else its a big waste.

It obviously pops out of the case, though that's still a huge waste of real estate when they are using things like non full sized shift keys. I never could understand Dells 2010. It was priced like a flagship, but you never could get one with top end parts. Maybe this will be the model to change that aweful direction the 20" lappy's have been going down. There are lots of us out there who aren't put off by the weight of high end laptops. I never understand how people can always act put off by laptop weights, 12 lbs is not much to carry. grow stronger I guess :)

Clevo's 20 inch 'laptop' packs in two 7950GTX's in an SLI configuration so it actually makes good use of the size.

One of the pics from the source article shows an eject button for the remote. Looks like a good portable MCE to me. With the HDMI you could hook it up to your big screen, and watch HD-DVD using the remote.

... And all that realestate.. They could at least thro in a pair of 8600 GO video cards in SLi.

That would be a definate wet dream for us gamers on the go

I was wondering what kind of battery will they use in this laptop. HP laptops are already infamous for their low battery life. With this 20" screen and all those powerful components, i think, mobility will be almost zero. What use is for a laptop if it have only a stamina of less than one hour?

It's still a tad bit easier then chucking a 20" LCD + case on the road to lan parties and such. I'd guess most people would use it as a desktop replacement plugged permanently, so the battery time wouldn't matter too much.

I'd ask it to have enough battery life to make it through a average DVD, but that's probably asking too much. It's not like it will fit in an airline seat tray anyway, so nothing lost if it doesn't I guess. I can't see users of this thing trying to run to far from a wall outlet.

This will compete well against Dell's M2010 and Alienware's mALX. I just wish HP didn't go the HD DVD way and let the consumer choose between Blu-ray and HD DVD.

I, too, think it will be cool if they just let the consumer choose between Blu-ray and HD-DVD then just see which model sells better. However, I'm thinking they would have to be contracted to ordering a certain number of either drive, and that would be a deciding factor on whether or not the consumer gets to choose.

Nobody's asked the most important message, What's it going to cost? A smaller alienware laptop with similar specifications generally runs for about 3k. I doubt we'll see this laptop in retail.

Is anyone with a "gaming laptop" even taken seriously? Sure Americans are getting fatter, but is anyone's lap seriously big enough to necessitate a 20" laptop?
