A VW-made iCar could be next in line from Apple's iLife world domination plans

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Volkswagen's chief Martin Winterkorn met several days ago in California, and plan to meet for further discussions according to the Associated Press. The two companies are apparently working on “scores of ideas,” though none are set in stone.

Industry experts believe that Apple and VW may be working on the “iCar,” or some sort of vehicle concept that would incorporate a significant amount of media devices in its peripheral functionality.

Apple currently works with many automakers, including VW, to provide iPod connections as options for new vehicles. Cars with such connections can automatically interface with iPods to play the stored music through the vehicle’s interface and sound system.

The merging of computer and consumer electronics technology with cars is one that increasing in recent years. Earlier this year at CES 2007, Bill Gates announced during his keynote address that Microsoft would be incorporating its Auto software into Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

with all the progress VW has made in terms of design and quality over the last decade or so, partnering up with apple seems like a giant step backwards.

first off, whatever shape this will take you can be sure that it will only be compatible with other apple products (ipod connector but no other line-in for other mp3 players, for example); and since apple cannot even make a phone that doesn't crash just imagine what they will do to a car...

but the easily impressed and those who know nothing about technology will still buy them in droves.

Whether or not you personally like Apple, should not be part of the equation. I do not own any apple products, but I am not against them either.

The iPod is the #1 selling MP3 player of all time. Please tell me why they wouldnt want to interface directly with it? The point is not just an auxillary "Line In" connector - but an actual interface to control the ipod from the main radio controls, and see what is play and sort through playlists, artists, albums, genres, etc. Why would VW/Audi spend money on a interface for any other device when they are not nearly as popular?

Also, an iConcept would make sense for the iPhone as well. I dont have any use for it, but seeing how many sold - and now that you can unlock them - there will be many more out there on other networks. Why wouldnt they want to invest in a concept like this?

Like I said, I would not buy it, but you are looking at automobiles that are being sold not just in the US. The point of making an investment is to reach the largest audience possible - which makes the iPod a necessity for them.

I dont see the point of your hatred unless you own a zune and love VW.

whether i personally like something or not matters very much to me, especially when we are talking about buying a car. also, ipods are a good example of how most people seem to care about marketing rather than the actual product; i have both a nano and a creative zen and i can thus tell you from personal experience that the creative is far superior to the apple in features and price, and the sound quality is the same.
every product apple makes is overpriced, underfeatured, and underpowered.

So a car maker should go out of its way to cater to a minority group instead of the majority group? That is not a wise investment.

No one says you have to add the option to the car. But since no one else is integrating what you are looking for, i think that should tell you its not going to happen.

I see where he is coming from though. First off ipod products are much more popular in north america then anywhere else in the world. Second VW is not what i would call North Americas favorite car brand.

They sell enough cars, but will there be enough people that want a VW in the first place and have an ipod to use with it? Even if this car comes to life, it is going to be a niche market for those dumb enough to buy a Vdub for the ipod connections.

I don't know about you but when i look on the streets at the people driving small VW's, i see middle aged woman, and a few teens driving their parents car. I don't see people blasting their music going down the street. I could be wrong, but thats the way i see it...

The VW Jetta is probably one of the most popular cars on the streets here for people ages 19-28. They refer to it as the "metro" mobile.....short for MetroSexual car.

Makes sense, I live in Canada, and lets just say the reliability of Jettas and Golfs just don't cut it in the Canadian winter. Especially those stupid 2.0L engine models. Unless you were smart enough to buy a 1.8T (2.0T now) most peoples VW's don't seem to see too much action passed 5-6 years ;)

My girlfriend's 2000 1.8T recently had its water pump die. Engine overheated, head gasket blew, head may be cracked. It's dead, and it had BARELY over 100,000 miles on it. That doesn't sound like the kind of reliability I've been led to believe VWs have.

Right... It's VW's fault that your GF/you do not understand that she needs to stop driving at get the car looked at?

I'm mean seriously. Shit happends to all cars, but if my wheel falls off I don't keep driving. The 1.8T is an awesome engine, I love mine.

the 1.8T's are good as i said before, but all jettas from that time frame had problems with the waterpump overheating the engine. Just because you love your car and you have not had any problems, does not mean his problem was user error. My GF's mom had to get her waterpump fixed four times before they got it right, and thats just unacceptable.

Its a well known fact 2000-04 Jettas had many many engine problems, not helping the matter is how complex the engines are, and i would not recommend bringing your car to anything but a VW dealer to get it fixed, which is very costly. Many people decide not to take this route and they end up bringing it to a VW dealer afterwards to fix what the original mechanic did work on.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. That thing ran COMPLETELY NORMAL up until it finally sputtered and died in her driveway after an hour-long drive. (She'd made plenty of long trips in the car in the months prior to its demise.) My girlfriend knows that car better than anyone else, and she never noticed anything off while driving it. Her mother, who is actually a great mechanic, was in the car during that trip just before it died, and she didn't notice the car running poorly at all.

So, yeah, I'm blaming VW. There was absolutely no indication that anything was even remotely wrong. It just suddenly crapped out.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, the temp gauge stopped working because the pump was malfunctioning, causing the needle to stay right in the middle where it should've been. Had it not been for that, she would've known it was overheating.

Led to believe by whom? They don't even advertise it in commercials like other companies do. All i see is, 'WE ARE GOING TO PIMP UP YOUR RIDE' commericals with that tight cast german/russian actor. As mdogs said, they are great in the beginning, leasing especially, but after 5-6 years you are taking a risk if you keep it.

Not only that, i swear vdub engines have the dumbest design ever. If you have ever had something easy to fix like a blown gasket or a water pump as you did, most of the stuff that would usually break on a car is located either at the bottom of the engine, or in some place that can not be reached without lifting the engine and paying thousands of dollars. I've had friends that have paid thousands of dollars to fix their 5-6 thousand dollar VDUBS, and i always laugh.

I got the idea he's speaking of a head gasket b/c of the heat issue and the fact the car is dead.
I wouldn't call a blown head gasket an easy fix, expecially with an alu engine block. Back in the good ol 80's and 90's we had cast iron blocks and could always assume that only the head warped and needed resurfaced. With all of our 'modern' progress to save a few pounds and a few $, we now must take the entire engine out and get it machined as well. So what used to be a 1 hour trip to the machine shop with a little (30-50lb) part you could pull in a couple hours, wrap in a towel, and throw on your floorboard now requires a truck, some straps, a few extra lifts, and bigger machinery. Not to mention a few extra hours of work and fustration. OHC adds a little fuss as well, but at least OHC has some real benefits.

On second note, kudos to the man who said your girlfriend needs to learn to stop driving when that little needle gets near that little "H". Mine lost a water pump belt last month and proceded to drive for over 10 minutes. She got real lucky though.

That is if your car is nice enough to have an actual temp gauge... My car (06 Cobalt, leased) has 3 real gauges. speed, tach, and gas. Everything else is buried in the "driver information center" and i hate having to push a button several times to get the temp. And i don't recall there even being a batter meter...

Of course you have to be stupid to actually let the engine blow, but some people are not car savy, and do not know what the H means, or notice it too late. If its a defect in the car, its nobody's fault but the manufacturer. Go look it up on Consumer Reports, or any other site that rates used cars, they will all tell you the same thing on that particular model.

I'd say when the water pump goes, but the temperature gauge dies with it and the needle stays right in the middle where it should be, the driver can't be blamed. Especially when the car runs, seemingly, just fine.

i'm not saying that they should cater to MY tastes, what i was trying to say is that this is in my opinion a bad move on their part because apple is an isolationist company that tries to use proprietary tech that locks people into apple products. because of this i would not consider buying a car that is built around apple tech. why should i buy something that i think sucks?

if you must know though, here goes: i'm german, i now live in canada, but grew up in germany. i thus hate VWs because every granny has a golf or polo, every student has a rusted-out golf (or rusted-out opel kadett), and they generally have the image of being boring and appliance-like (much like japanese cars). as i said in my original post though i believe that they have made improvements over the last few years, but when i hear them adverstise their cars as the poor man's BMW or as something "german" (when the golf/jetta are actually made in mexico) i have to laugh.

Note that VW AG was a few years ago the largest automotive group in the world. They have since fallen to #4 in terms of pure production standards, behind GM, Toyota, and Ford. Those of us who watch the news will know that GM and Ford are hemorrhaging money on the order of billions a year. So VW is very much a massive global player, and if GM or Ford seem destined to suffer the way of Chrysler, could emerge a leader.

Granted VW doesn't have tremendous market share in the states (the Detroit auto makers hold 60%), they do own a number of other brands, including Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley (Bugatti as well, but it's not like they build many of those...).

As for the multimedia car concept... a year ago I would have said that it wasn't suitable for the USA market, which tends to be less gadget prone than Europe and especially Asia. However, I have to give credit to Apple for making a large impact on introducing technology to the mainstream -- maybe they can pull it off again. (I don't think they're going to be involved with the car bits, so if the multimedia system crashes I don't think the car will explode)

I'd have to disagree with you a little bit there, if the new GTI is any indication of the better quality and design you think VW embodies. Why? That car, which is a "small" 2-door hatchback, weighs 3255 pounds well-equipped. That's ridiculous. That's not progress, IMO, at least not for a sports car. Granted, it's pretty fast despite that, (though only marginally faster than the Sentra SE-R SpecV) but just imagine what a car like the SpecV (not the 2007) could do with 200 horses, considering it weighs over 500 pounds less. It corners better (.88g vs the GTI's .85g on the skidpad) AND it has more interior room and cargo space. The previous generation GTI weighed around 2800lbs. Seems to me the 2007 GTI is just a lot of bloat.

I'm not knocking any of the sporty cars out there, they are probably nice cars and most certainly better to live with on a daily basis. But take a ride in a true "sports car" and you'll quickly figure out the difference.

RE: not good

The definition of a sports car is very loose. I'd call a car with these things:

6 speed manual tranny
Stiff suspension
Limited-slip differential

the kinds of features you'd find in a sports car. Just because it only costs $20,000 and only has 200 or less horsepower doesn't mean it's not a sports car.

But that aside, I've driven a few sports cars, most recently my uncle's '07 Corvette (with a 6 speed), and I appreciate the difference in quality and power present in a $50k car, but not everyone can afford a $30k plus car. A Sentra SE-R SpecV is a whole different world compared to a Sentra 1.8, believe me.

http://www.nissan-dakar.com/EN/NEWS/PRESS/040702.h...

Base model econocars don't get made into race cars. That thing is keeping pace with $30k plus Acura and BMW race cars.

By your definintion, a Ford F-150 can meet that criterea. And there are pleny of cars with automatic transmissions in racing.

Fortunately, for the rest of the world, a sports car is pretty well defined.

So just because someone can't afford something, the definition should be changed? Speed costs, first rule in racing. Any car can be made to go fast, but will it handle, be controlable at the limit, brake, withstand constant high-rpm action, etc. These are what govern whether a car can be called a sports car.

You, sir, are a first class Muppet. Partnering with Apple is a giant step forwards because they know how to design stuff that people want to buy, both in terms of the look and feel of the physical product and the interface. Microsoft seems to be moving in this direction with much more R&D into interface design but they're definitely playing catch-up on this one.

The iPod interface just makes sense because the rest of the industry can't make up its mind on a common interface to their devices. At least with the iPod you just need to implement a Dock Connector and you're done. With the rest of the MP3 devices you'll be implementing a different interface for each manufacturer.

Personally, I'm very happy with the idea. Mind you, the VW is only a concept but the Jaguar XF is real and Apple worked on that as well.

Y'all are blowing this way out of proportion. The iCar is nothing but a proof-of-concept telematics design initiative that VW and Apple plan to showcase at one of the autoshows. VW will design the car, and will work with Apple to incorporate smart intuitive controls (and some nice iPhone and iPod integration). It'll be years before any of this makes it to their production cars, however.

Im sure they will do the same with Audi. VW's are based on the Audi interior and exterior parts - but differ in some ways, more less the luxurious options and AWD. I have a new A4 Quattro Turbo, and if the Apple system was in there allowing me to plug an iPod into it and use the MP3 player on my radio and use the radio controls it, then i would consider buying an ipod. I hate fm transmittions because they all sound like crap, and i hate having things left all over the car.

I dont love or hate apple, and could really care less about them. But i do love my Audi, and if i could get something like that to make my car audio that much better, i would not be opposed.

yeah, VW owns Audi and porsche has a 30% stake in VAG.

my train of thought is that Audi is too classy/upscale for a cutesy iCar type thing. plus there's already MMI which you can get on all Audis i think (standard on A8, option on A6/A4, i think, but don't quote me!).

Actually its similar to the Lexus vs Toyota. The VW interiors are based off he luxury designs of Audi now. Not the other way around. Which is why last generations Jetta was based off a 2 generation ago A4 exterior.

Platform is the same, and VW does have the option for SOME of the Audi motors but not all, and they do not have the drive train options.

No matter how you put it, VW owns Audi, not the other way around, any engine that audi has that is different from their VW counterparts are modified VW engines, or atleast based on the VW engines. The interior styling might be the taken from audi, but thats about where the line is drawn. Toyota and Lexus is the same deal, its cheaper to run off one platform than it is two. Almost all car companies do it, its not out of the ordinary. Audi's and VW's just happen to be remarkably similar.

By mdogs444 on 8/30/2007 11:08:56 AM , Rating: 2
I know the platform is the same - but VW does not use all of the engines. Audi has the V8 found in the S4/RS4, S6/RS6 and the V10 found in the R8, and V12 found in the A8W12. Im just saying that the options and luxuries availably on Audi are not alwyas available on VW. Same with Toyota Lexus.

Its just marketing. Apple isnt nearly the only one using the "i-" for marketing. But if putting the "i-" in there draws more consumers, well, then its hard to argue.

The iCar will be GasLocked to one brand of gas station and Apple will get a 10% share of each gallon. :p

The real news...

Bill Gates announced during his keynote address that Microsoft would be incorporating its Auto software into Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

and yet another reason on top of the other thousands why I will not buy, own or drive a Ford product... of course this is personal preference. Would it be wrong to say I currently own an older Chevy (100% made in USA) and Dodge (65% made in USA)?

Due to the size of the VW cars and line, I couldn't fit in them anyways at my height so the news with Apple leaves me indifferent. I do see that it is good that some popular technology companies are stepping into different markets.

Compatibility

Someone help me understand. Many on this forum argue about the different hi def standards between blue ray & hd-dvd. Some won't buy until it's settled. While music is a form of media no one cares as much about different standards and compatibility. If both are similar forms of media shouldn't the argument for compatibility hold for both. At least BR or hd-dvd are a consortium & willing to license their standards. I thought apple was in the spotlight for not allowing others compatibility. Heck windows even lets you right programs for windows or even windows mobile. Can't say the same for Apple, do they get a free pass where others are critizised?

Imagine the Shipping Charges...

When the battery in the iCar dies, shipping it back to Apple is going to cost a fortune!

Isn't the Apple fanatic generally a VW driver anyways?

They have the same kind of advertising campaigns ---> reach the same market.
