New phones offered by Apple and Verizon would be "iPhone-like"

The iPhone took the smartphone world by storm, dominating sales charts and creating a revenue juggernaut via the App Store.  AT&T has long been the sole official carrier of the iPhone in the U.S.  While that may continue, its monopoly of the Apple-branded phone market may soon be compromised as Verizon is reportedly in talks with Apple to develop two new phone products.

Business Week cites inside sources as saying that prototypes of the new phones are complete and negotiations have been ongoing for over a year.  Reportedly, Steve Jobs is in on the talks.

One device is a small phone, described as the "iPhone lite", which would be cheaper than the iPhone.  Its key would be that it would use a system-on-a-chip (SOC) design, which would compact the phone's electronics and make production cheaper.  A source states, "It will have a much lower cost that will blow away the margins on the BlackBerry and the iPhone."

The second device is a tablet/media pad which can make calls over a Wi-Fi connection.  It would be designed primarily for listening to music, viewing photos, or watching high-definition video.  The new media pad is reportedly smaller than a Kindle, but with an equally big touch-screen.  Either device could debut as early as the summer, according to the source.

Another source about the media pad, which they claim to have seen, adds, "The media pad category might go to Verizon.  We are talking about a device where people will say, 'Damn, why didn't we do this?' Apple is probably going to define the damn category."

Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam confirmed talks with Apple, stating, "In the last six months, I have talked to Steve Jobs."

He would not, however, say what they talked about.

Even if the hardware devices indeed exist, there is still friction between the two companies.  Both parties want to get a bigger piece of the revenue pie.  Furthermore, Verizon has long been a vocal critic of the iPhone, debuting "anti-iPhone" commercials and ads, which portray the iPhone as closed and on a poor network.

Still, with 7 million new subscribers to AT&T from the iPhone, the lure of Verizon’s subscriber base will likely be hard for Apple to resist.  The company could also use a phone offering to stop Verizon from offering the Pre smartphone from Palm, which is considered the first real threat to the iPhone.  The multi-touch Pre is set to be offered to Sprint's 35.5 million customers, and Verizon, with 86.6 million subscribers, was reportedly also considering adopting the phone.

The news of the Apple phone products for Verizon comes hot on the heels of a USA Today report on April 27 that Apple was in talks to adapt the current iPhone for the Verizon Wireless network.  The move would require Apple to rework its phone to work with a CDMA wireless network, different from the AT&T's GSM technology.

Verizon will find a way to cripple it
By DEredita on 4/28/2009 9:54:31 AM , Rating: 5
I am not impressed. My feeling is that Verizon will find a way to cripple the phone, just like they did with the HPC smart phones.

I was a Verizon Wireless customer for 8+ years, and the one thing I always noticed was they offered the least attractive phones. When I was shopping early this year for a smart phone, I looked though Verizon's offerings, and most were slow and/or crippled, like the HPC Touch that had half the ram removed.

I was so frustrated by their terrible offerings, that I dropped Verizon and switched to AT&T, where I got the iPhone. I have not looked back since then.

Quite happy with my LG EnV v1.

This is one of my worries as an AT&T customer - when Verizon shows up they could be offered limited veto power on iPhone apps, much like the recent rumor of the Slingbox/AT&T issue.

So they end up killing off a lot of what could be great apps. I can guarantee they'll want to kill any streaming video app over their data network, other than YT which Apple wont let them kill.

How long did it take Verizon to enable bluetooth tethering? My company had a legit use for BT tethering, and had spent $100,000 on equipment that relied on it, and Verizon gave us a hell of a time getting BT turned back on once they turned it off (after they figured out what we were doing).

I got a Samsung SCH i760 for free (with contract renewal) on Verizon. Windows Mobile and WiFi!

That is true, most commonly they cripple the bluetooth. I have heard that they cripple some of the gps functions so they can sell their mapping software by subscription only.

Can't us Verizon users just get a normal iPhone as well? I don't want a Lite version, I don't want some fancy "media tablet". I just want to get a regular, vanilla iPhone. Preferably in 32GB flavor so I can completely replace my Zune, but honestly 16GB is fine, just as long as its the same device that AT&T users are getting.

There's this thing called a contract that AT&T and Apple signed.

RE: So, uh...
By thekdub on 4/28/2009 2:27:15 PM , Rating: 2
Which is due to expire in 2010. Meaning that once said contract is up, Apple is free to offer the iPhone for whatever carrier they want, provided they don't renew the contract with AT&T or sign another exclusivity contract with a different carrier.

And wouldn't an iPhone Lite violate this contract anyways? Surely if the normal iPhone isn't allowed with Verizon while this contract is still in effect (or even after it expires, if I'm reading your comment correctly), the same would apply to a smaller iPhone derivative?

Depends on how the contract was written and interpreted. Suppose it only specifically calls out the iPhone? In that case, Apple might be free to develop different "kinds" of phones and work with other carriers. Who knows...

I wish Apple would release an iPhone on tMobile or at least an official unlocked version. I don't want to switch companies, and I hate AT&T after the crap service I had with them for so long.

Umm, isn't there an official unlocked version? I saw one somewhere, I think it was Buy.com... found it:

Sold out atm, but they do exist.

I wasn't aware they started selling them yet. Now, I've no longer have to worry about jailbreaking my phone ever update.

IPhone on Verizon
By SlipDizzy on 4/28/2009 10:01:29 AM , Rating: 2
First I'd like to state that I don't own any Apple hardware/software and the whole "Apple Tax" never really appealed to me. However, if Verizon sold an IPhone then they can count on me purchasing one. My Blackberry Storm is a good phone, but it leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know about purchasing a smaller IPhone or a tablet, but I'd buy an Iphone. I've used an IPhone on several occasions and it appeared to do everything better (everything that it is capable of doing) than my Storm. Also, I'd like to state that if it doesn't come to Verizon then I'll just be sticking with Verizon and my Storm.

RE: IPhone on Verizon

I'll probably get the 2nd version of the Storm after they release it. Should be before my contract is up anyway and I can get a discount on the phone when the time comes.

By SlipDizzy on 4/28/2009 10:53:19 AM , Rating: 3
I'll have to agree with you FIT. The concept and everything the Storm does is fine, but it needs a bit more polishing. If the OS wasn't so sluggish (at times) and the Blackberry App Store was a bit more developed then the Storm would really be competing. Hopefully the rumors are true and the Storm 2.0 gets to see some wifi access. I'll probably have to wait and see what RIM brings out because I still doubt Verizon will ever see a true IPhone.

Smartest thing Apple could do!
By omnicronx on 4/28/2009 10:56:02 AM , Rating: 2
This is the best possible move for Apple, perhaps not for the consumer (at least not in the beginning), as this will give Verizon the ability to lock down their phone as they please, but as popular and successful as the iPhone is, this is the push Apple needs to became THE major player in the smartphone market. Lower cost and carrier customization was the only thing BB and WinMo phones have over the iPhone. This will definitely level the playing field, and will once again force other cell phone makers to innovate to remain competitive.

By SnakeBlitzken on 4/28/2009 2:46:19 PM , Rating: 2
Agree. Apple gets to keep the contract with AT&T by developing products that are not iphones for Verizon. THis however, still leaves out the verizon customers who still want an iphone. For me, there's no real choice in networks where I live since AT&T is the only carrier that has the area covered.

I'm waiting for the iPhone Shuffle. It's incredibly tiny, but doesn't have a keypad, and simply phones random people on your contact list.

Media Pad exclusivity?

Why would this device need to be locked to a cell phone provider when it's only connection to the world is Wi-Fi, not a wireless/cellular connection? This just seems asinine to not sell this thing to everybody, if it's actually good. Plus, what incentive would there be to buy one from Verizon? What could they possibly lock the buyer into, since they can't sell it with a cellular plan, if the current report of this device is to be believed.

iPad?

I've heard talk that the tablet/media pad might be called the iPad.

I suspect that the smaller iPhone lite will be called the iPon.
