Andy Rubin expected to announce Gingerbread at D:Dive Into Mobile Conference

After months of speculation and minor detail leaks, Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" might finally get official today.

The tech blogosphere is abuzz after Notion Ink, an Indian developer, wrote in a blog post over the weekend:

6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work. (Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3)

Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering at Google, is scheduled to speak at the D:Dive Into Mobile Conference in San Francisco today. This has fueled further speculation that an official Gingerbread announcement is coming today.

Of course, the same was thought of Eric Schmidt's speech at the Web 2.0 Summit. And while the official announcement wasn't made at that event three weeks ago, Schmidt did out the Samsung Nexus S and hinted at some of Gingerbread's new features.

The clock is ticking for the new OS launch. Google has less than three weeks to get it out to consumers before its holiday-themed codename becomes last year's news.

Obligatory comment about her running as fast as she can, and me catching her, sampling her cookies and coating her in frosting.

Google launching an update and Verizon launching an update are two totally different beasts.

With the carriers around here more like check back next December, you might be upgrading to 2.3 by then.

Thanks for the down-rating on my original post...why?

Anyhow.. yeah, no kidding with Verizon... my poor old Eris life was ended with 2.1 and no 2.2

Eris was a good phone(2.0 or newer)... better with Kaos-froyo 2.2 except the digital camera would crash everytime for me so I just kept it at 2.1 until my recent DroidX upgrade.

Let's look at the bright side: when you do see the 2.3 update, you'll know 2.4/3.0 is just around the corner.

That's nice. I'm on a Samsung Fascinate and don't even have 2.2 yet.

Plenty of ROMs out there with 2.2. I'd rather not have to rely on carriers/manufacturers to get updates to my phone. Doesn't make any sense since they didn't make the OS.

Don't you have to root your phone to load new ROMs? I do not want to void my warranty.
