Gadgets Update: Red Xbox 360 Elite is Official

Red Xbox 360 expected to be part of a Resident Evil 5 bundle

Microsoft has inadvertently confirmed the existence of the rumored red Xbox 360 elite in an official Halo Wars email sent to retailers and games press in New Zealand.

Last week, a Toys "R" Us employee sent Kotaku a snapshot of the store's inventory database which shows a red Xbox 360 Elite listed. The red Xbox 360's "item inquiry detail" lists the console’s price as $399 which is in sync with the current cost of a black Xbox 360 Elite. There is speculation that this red console could be part of a Resident Evil 5 bundle.

The email sent to New Zealand press and retailers was to announce a deal where anyone buying an Xbox 360 console would receive a free copy of Halo Wars. According to Microsoft, if you buy an Arcade, Pro or Elite model you will receive Halo Wars, but this deal does not apply to the Red Xbox 360 Elite console which is exclusive to EB games.

Microsoft wanted to clarify the rumored red Xbox 360 Elite would not apply for the Halo Wars deal, but announcing this point in an email had the side effect of confirming a red Xbox 360 Elite will be coming in the future.

Last month, Ars Technica's insider at Capcom reported Resident Evil 5, will be sold in a new Xbox 360 bundle. The bundle will allegedly include a copy of the game, a red Xbox 360, a red controller, an "exclusive" Resident Evil 5 NXE theme, and a download coupon for Xbox Live Arcade's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD.

I hope when you turn on the Red X-Box that the power light is always red, but when there are errors the light turns green... the green ring of death. That way everyone is confused and the world will be put into a state of constant mayhem.

I would rather they just make a white 120GB Xbox with an HDMI cable, an ethernet cable, and a wireless controller with that little headset for $199 and just have that one SKU. That way they can literally FORCE Sony to bring that PS3 price down ASAP.

I would rather they just make a white 120GB Xbox with an HDMI cable, an ethernet cable, and a wireless controller with that little headset for $199 and just have that one SKU. That way they can literally FORCE Sony to bring that PS3 price down ASAP.

& take much bigger loss, which I am sure they & Sony are not in business to do, LOL.

Could work depending on how much it takes them to produce all the SKUs that they have now. I have no idea on actual costs, but making just one SKU will lower the price of that SKU.

I agree with you on the sense that LCDs do not have a refresh rate similar to CRTs but they do have a refresh rate. In general, most people will agree if you buy a LCD the 60Hz or 120Hz is considered the refresh rate. An example would be in this Home theater section:

You can even google 120Hz and refresh rate and you will see almost all LCD's use this terminology but they are not addressing it as the same as a CRT's refresh rate.

I have the Arcade model and jumped on the cheap 20gb HDD offer Microsoft provided, and my second controller is red, from when they did a promotion thing about them a few months back and were cheaper than the white wireless controllers.

I'm currently contemplating selling my arcade for this and keep my second red controller, as I am running out of HDD space rather quickly, Plus I was going to grab a copy of Resident Evil 5 regardless.

Let me guess. Unmarried, no girlfriend, or under 18. Just call it a hunch. lol

Blood red is a pretty horrible colour for a console. It would certainly stand out, but not in a good way. Reminds me of the N64 days when they tried all those funky colours. I suppose these are Jasper consoles though so that's one reason to get it. Easy to identify.

It's way easy to just buy a new casing to replace the original casing. For either the console or controller. Not to mention there's services out there to mod the lights or add lights.

The semi-opaque, Blood Red shade of the Gametrain photo looks sexy.

Unfortunately I sincerely doubt Microsoft will have anything to do with distributing a transparent chassis. I suspect they want to keep peoples' minds off the hardware entirely. ;)

Interesting. A quick google search reveals various sites detailing an initiative by Dell & Microsoft to fight AIDS in Africa via this Red edition of Windows Vista. This 360 could very well be a part of that effort, but I think it less likely since the Product Red co-sponsor, Dell, isn't connected to the Xbox.

When we bought a first gen 360, the white plastic really looked ugly among the other home entertainment components, all of which are black. When the 360 broke and it was replaced with a black Elite, our setup looks good, as everything is black.

The only place a red console would look good is... well nowhere, but I imagine if you put it into a kid's bedroom, they would not care about the color.

A lot of electronics are turning white or silver now. I painted my 360 a pearl white to match my new faceplate. The original white/beige color is a letdown. At least the PS3 comes in a nice shiny black that loves to display fingerprints.

A red Xbox360... so what? Yawn....

About time they upgraded it with a Blu-ray drive and the associated smarts to be compatible with Blu-ray V2.x. Now THAT would be news. After all, the RETAIL price of a 6x Blu-ray drive is now well below $100. Stevie's focus is more on the bottom-line and laying off staff with $40billion in the bank than doing anything forward-looking with MS products.

With Sony losing money and lack-lustre PS3 sales, now would be the time to strike with an xBox360 that highly likely to be a PS3 killer. Contrast Stevie Ballmer sitting on his $40 billion with Paul Otellini over at Intel, who is deliberately raiding reserves to push their 32nm process as fast as possible into full production in spite of the huge downturn in Intel's earnings -- far greater %wise than Microsoft's tiny earnings downturn . Intel has only about $10billion in reserves. Guess which company will dominate their business when the recession is over....

My local Fry's has plenty of $399 Elites (and Halo Greens) XBox360s. I fear that at $399 there will be plenty of Red Elites on the shelves for a long time.

Me, I picked up a Jasper Arcade, bought the MS $35 20GB HD, $15 rechargeable battery pack and cable, and a $5 HDMI cable. $255 total. It was only after NXE came out, which made it possible to play the game from the HD, that I started to desire the 60GB or 120GB HD.
