Previous reports said 40 million

Target's data breach over the holiday shopping season seems to have hit more customers than previously reported.

According to USA Today, the number of customers affected by Target's data breach is now up to 70 million. The number was previously 40 million

"I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are truly sorry they are having to endure this," said Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel. 


The report said some of the data exposed in the breach were names, phone numbers, mailing addresses or email addresses. 

Target's breach ran from November 27 through December 15, where customer information like their names, card numbers, expiration dates and CVV verification codes were compromised. 

Also, the breach occurred in nearly all Target stores across the U.S. in-store, not online.

According to Bing, in 2012, the US population was 313,914,040 (314 million).

According to this article: "Target's breach ran from November 27 through December 15.... Also, the breach occurred in nearly all Target stores across the U.S. in-store, not online."

So, in less than one month, 70/314 = 22% of the population of the country visited a brick and mortar Target and paid with a credit card? Pretty good for a store I've been a "guest" at perhaps twice in the last 10 years.

I think Tiffany mis-interpreted the release. Ars [ ] points out that this is a separate leak from the credit cards.

So 40million credit cards, and at the same time also 70 million customer records (which have some overlap with the 40 million.)

That many people having given their information to Target over an unknown time period - that's reasonable.

The BREACHES occurred from Nov. 27 - Dev. 15. That does not mean 70 million customers made PURCHASES between those dates. Most, if not all, chain stores have customer databases that go back for several years. As long as they aren't wiped out, a store could have purchases going back to its very first sale. There's a tiny gift store that has a record of my purchases going back to 2006, including date, item, price, tax paid, payment method, company that made the item, whether or not I paid with a gift certificate, whether or not I got a discount, whether or not it was damaged and therefore ineligible for return...

My understanding is that the credit card machines themselves were compromised at the point of sale. If you didn't physically go a store during that time period you have nothing to worry about.

But, that understanding may be wrong.

That's what was said at first.
On December 19, Target first disclosed that as many 40 million credit and debit cards were compromised between November 27 and December 15 by malware installed on the company's point of sale registers.
But then more info came out.
But this past Friday, Target said its investigation found that at least 70 million customers' personal information was stolen from its database-including names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Some victims did not shop at Target during the time of the breach, said the retailer, which expects some overlap in the two data sets but does not have the exact numbers yet.
