5.5-inch phone/tablet will pack a quad-core processor and LTE/HSPA+

Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KSC:005930) is trying to not let Apple's legal attacks hinder its stellar U.S. sales performance.  It's been busy announcing new models of late, including the Galaxy Note II, which features the S-Pen technology.

The first generation Note was a modest sales success, but the next generation brings far more to the table.  It packs largely in-house hardware -- a gorgeous 1280 x 720 HD Super AMOLED display, a beastly 1.6 GHz quad-core Exynos system-on-a-chip, and 2 GB of DRAM.

Both the latest HSPA+ spec and LTE will be supported and the device will ship with Google Inc.'s (GOOG) latest and greatest Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean".  The body designs -- like HTC Corp.'s (TPE:2498) new Windows Phones and Nokia Oyj.'s (HEX:NOK1V) Lumia line -- will come in an array of colorful polycarbonates.

Galaxy Note

The device will be available on all major U.S. carriers "by mid-November" [source].

Same here, waiting for Note with WP8 and 1280x768 5.5" screen to ditch Android. Combination of best phone hardware and best mobile OS is gonna be super sweet!

That would be my perfect phone, but the Note 2 isn't just about the screen. I'm not sure if Samsung could get the same functionality with WP8 as it can with Android customizations, as the stylus integration is what really makes this phone unique.

I'd get it in a heart beat even without a stylus, the screen size and resolution means everything for me

BTW no it's not coming. There are no rumors now about Note with WP8 onboard. So looks like I'm staying on Android for a long time. Sigh.

Too bad, because WP8 on a 5.5" would be amazing.

Man you don't say! Ballmer is such a loser by not making some real advanced hardware available for WP8. Windows Phone is bog standard even in version 8. Better than junk hardware in WP7 but still... just like any other Android middle end phone. Small screens, small batteries, weird accessories like wireless charging, while Android has fastest latest CPUs/GPUs (Optimus G), best screens (Note), best batteries (Razr Maxx), which is way more useful and substantial in real life usage scenarios.

I'm disappointed with the current WP8 launch hardware line up. Nothing impressive at all. I'll probably try it out this xmas anyway, maybe it'll grow on me. ATIV S has kinda decent screen and hardware overall, microSD is there too so must be a good investment. If Madfinger eventually ports Dead Trigger to WP8 (which is very likely since this is a Unity game and Unity announced WP8 port coming soon) then I won't probably have a single app on WP8 that I'd miss after leaving Android. We'll see.

You're being too hard on the WP8 offerings, especially the Lumia 920. It has the highest resolution, best touchscreen (working with gloves is a solid selling point), and by far the best camera due to the OIS and f/2.0 lens.

For real-world usage, those have way more impact than quad vs dual CPU, or any of the other features you mentioned, of which you can only find one in any phone. IMO, overall the Lumia 920 stands above every phone except the Note 2, which isn't Samsung's best seller anyway.

I hope they market it right, and Win8 apps take off quickly.

Why I'm considering this over an S3
By Jedi2155 on 9/21/2012 6:36:20 AM , Rating: 2
My contract ends in November (although I can upgrade now), so I'm highly considering this device over an S3 for the following reasons:

+ Galaxy S3 will be mid-way through life cycle by November & Note II will be the latest and greatest at that point in time.
+ It uses a 1.6 GHz Quad Exynos chip which means it should probably also have the Wolfson DAC on it and more performance than the S3.
+ Having a note taking device with a stylus can prove to be extremely useful especially at work.
+ Bigger screen is useful for various reasons, plus its 16:9 instead of 16:10 meaning is more narrow and look less GIANT than the first note.
+ I almost never use my phone as a phone, mostly for texting, so a bigger screen has plenty of advantages.

Minuses
- The times I do use a phone, even I will think I look like a crazy nerd with a giant pad on his face.
- Its really is ginormous.

I have a SGIII currently, My wife wants the iphone5 and told her no or gtfo! lol I really did say that. She loves my SGIII and she is still on a SGII. So I will get this and trade up her phone to mine. I can't wait!!

Wolfson WM1811 is a decent chip but I would like to see their WM8741 and WM8805 used for better quality. The iPhone 5 uses a Cirrus Audio 338S1077 which is an improvement over the iPhone 4S' 338S0589... which wasn't too shabby.

I've heard that in my own ears, and was highly debating a iPhone 5 only because of the excellent sound quality. But couldn't stand anything else about it....

If I didn't love my Note's stylus so much, I would likely be looking to get a Lumia 920, but because I do, the Note 2 looks incredible to me. They really put a lot of thought into the stylus integration this time, made the body narrower while making the screen larger and non-Pentile, and increased the battery size.

So glad that it's being released in the US early this time. Hope it won't cost an arm and a leg off contract.

what is this mental disorder with people buying a new phone every three months,Jesus people. It like upgrading from sandy bridge to ivy bridge , nothing really changed. Now the leap from sandybridge to Haswell i could see. these are examples. Besides do you realize how stupid people look talking on huge phones might as well take my 17.3 inch MSI and hold up to your head and talk on it. but i am for personal choice. My girlfriend has this note.

Some people care more about how well a smartphone works as, you know, a smartphone over how some prick looks down on him for using a big phone. Unless you have girly hands, it's fine for handling, even with one hand.

I got my Note used, in anticipation of the new one, and it can always be an upgrade for my siblings or anyone else. Why do you care so much about me changing phones?

There's a HUGE number of changes with the Note 2. Larger screen (yet slimmer width), better stylus, larger battery, 3x the speed (from S3 to quad core Exynos), and a gazillion software enhancements. That's like going from a P4 w/ XP to Ivy Bridge w/ W7.

it has a clock. apple totally invented clocks. and then innovated the hell outta them by uh... by uh... well, by changing the font of the digits. yep.

so samsung will have to pay them one hundred billion dollars if they wanna use clocks in their phones. and maybe they'll have to fork over a few sharks with lasers on their frickin' heads, too; if that's not too much ask for.

Well it is a good thing that the iPhone 5 will survive a fall better than a Galaxy S3. With the complete disaster that iOS6 appears to be, the iPhone5 may survive the multiple launches against the floor and wall it will get from frustrated users.
Of course the iPhone4 and iPhone4S were glass on the front and back which was totally ridiculous. Glad you could root out the only thing about the iPhone5 that is actually better than the Galaxy S3.
