Next generation iPhone is fast approaching

Apple has confirmed that the next generation iPhone will be announced next Wednesday at 1pm EST. Interestingly, the number "5" is shown prominently even though this would mark the sixth generation iPhone.
 
Considering that the third generation iPad was called the "New iPad", we were expecting the next generation iPhone to simply be called the "New iPhone".
 
Regardless of whatever the new iPhone is called, it's widely expected that the new iPhone will feature a 4" (640x1136) display, unibody construction, a smaller dock connector, redesigned earbuds, and a thinner profile.

All this time, and the res is 1136x640..? C'mon Apple, catch up!

No matter what side I'm on, can't help but feel Apple would have a home run android-killer if they just added the simple features everyone has been griping for for ages.. micro usb, mass storage device compatibility, micro sd cards, replaceable batteries. Maintaining their 'closed off ecosystem' hasn't exactly been playing in their favor the last 2 years..

Exactly. I'd strongly consider that. Especially if it had a 4.5inch or larger screen.

Ummm... Apple is never going to have top of the line everything in its products, so you can stop fussing over it.

I like the size of the iPhone just fine (as do most people, check the scoreboard), so I hope it doesn't get larger and larger.

Is it still not a higher ppi than other phones? Honestly don't know, but if it is, the res is irrelevant considering iOS scales. It's not like you're gonna have more room for another app to run on the same screen. And forget about media, because in video you're really going to see the difference right?

It is a higher ppi than samsung's super-amoled's.. And of course, the benefits of any higher res are entirely superfluous at such a small size, but..

Mostly, it's just the ability to add the 'HD' moniker onto everything. As it is, Apple markets this device as having an 'high definition' display which is capable of 'playing' HD video -- an amazingly ironic ploy since the 4S can indeed record 1080p video but not display it.

No phone has a 1920x1080 display. And likely never will. Because it'd be useless. 1280x720 for a 4-5" phone is quite enough.

Didn't mean to give the impression that they should, hehe..

By HD, I'm following the standard that includes anything that has a vertical resolution of 720p or up (and mostly only useful for marketing rather than function, admittedly). I just thought it was funny that an iPhone can record 1080p and is completely capable of playing it back, though can barely display 35% of the actual resolution (1126x640 vs 1920x1080.. I did the math).

The problem I have with the iPhone, and will appearantly continue to have with the iPhone, is that the screen is just too small to type on. Since there is virtually no added width to the 4" screen, this isn't going to be improved with the 6th generation iPhone.

For Apple, this is embarassing. Almost as embarassing as trying to fill these shortcomings of an untypable screen with Siri trying to save you the trouble.

If RIM hadn't fallen so far behind with BBOS, the combination of the keyboard and touch-screen on the Torch could have been amazing. I love candybar sliders like that. Hell, I still used a Palm Pre (actually Veer 4G) until just a few months ago just because of the slider keyboard!

Landscape sliders don't have the same magic because you need to rotate the phone and use two hands. At that point, you might as well just type landscape on the screen...

Any dock connector works just fine..? I guess you mean as long as it's an Apple dock connector -- and in this case specifically designed for the new smaller 9-pin connector (so really, only one dock connector works).. Whereas the entire rest of the industry charges, syncs, and has MHL compatibility (you really have no idea how important this can be -- for one thing, never need to carry a thumb drive again) all through a standard micro-usb connector. So, stranded at a friends house without a charger -- pretty much guarantee there's a spare micro usb cable around somewhere.

And microSD slots..? It's not an issue with slow cards or bad performance -- android successfully dealt with this issue by enabling a user to manage which apps are installed on the card or in the rom (an ability we had back in WinMo 2k3, btw). Mostly.. now lets be honest.. it's so Apple can charge an extra $200 for $4 worth of mem.

Batteries.. eh. Admittedly, Apple has done a lot of work to include a high quality battery as well as extensive power saving tweaks inside iOS to deliver nearly unparalleled battery life (at least prior to harboring a 4g capable radio chip -- good decision on their part). Still.. batteries do fail, whether by misuse or defect. Though I have several friends who literally threw away their iPhones after the battery wore out (stupidly buying new phones == more profit), I feel Apple would ultimately save more money in the long run by allowing users to replace their own batteries rather than dealing with the support issues. I imagine their argument against this would be leaving room for aftermarket battery suppliers to muscle in, causing obvious problems with substandard batteries (have yet to experience an aftermarket battery that works well, let alone working past 2-3 charges).

FWIW, I don't see the new Galaxy series competing well with the iPhone 5.. Spec wise, it's as good or better -- but is designed to meet a certain price point to undercut Apple. It's cheaper, hence more cheaply made (despite the typical Apple markup -- the S3 looks more like a feature phone than a flagship model). Hold one in each hand, and I'm sure on feel and looks alone most would prefer an iPhone (if they don't mind paying for it).

Currently..? Yes. In the history of the world..? Not yet.. still have a ways to reach where MS was 15 years ago before they repeatedly started shooting themselves in the foot. Even then, doubt either would come close to IBM 50 years ago..

Keep in mind it's all 'market valuation'.. Remember 10 years ago when Yahoo was valued at billions, while now nobody wants to touch it with a ten foot pole..? Or even, how about 6 months ago when FB had the world's most anticipated IPO, only to be worth a dismal fraction now. Apple's market value relies solely on their name, not actual property or worth. One bad marketing decision (or one bad court verdict) and they could be circling the drain quickly with nothing to turn to but their digital subscription services..

Apple has more cash reserves than ExxonMobil, which I don't think was a position Microsoft ever found themselves in. I'm sure they'll be fine regardless of what comes their way.

And they're about to launch the iPhone 5, which all signs point to being another sales hit, which will only increase their cash reserves. I don't doubt that they will shoot themselves in the foot eventually, but for now it looks like they can float a few mistakes.

" android-killer " no such thing....just as there is no single "Ipad Killer".

It's a subjective point of view and for those who are NOT followers and make their own choice based on their individual needs.....it's a pointless item to discuss/debate.

Most consumers have already made up their mind what OS they prefer.

I'd go back to a flip phone before I'd own an Iproduct.

Apples ecosystem is simplistic and controlling. Just like a prison. Only difference is Ifollowers freely entered, but neither can escape with out "Jail-braking".

Just try and operate any IProduct outside Apples walled garden.

Always thought that was hilarious... especially with what MS ended up paying to the EU in fines..

People complain that it's preinstalled.. and then people complain that a brand new OS lacks basic functionality like a web browser. MS will definitely be getting some heat over IE10 in Win8 stealing file associations out of nowhere, at least if they don't get it fixed by launch (still a problem in RTM).

BAH BAH. Typical iSheep. They aren't trying to enforce a monopoly themselves. That would be too sloppy and look bad for their image. They are going and try to get a government enforced monopoly that way everything will be smooth sailing and a-ok.

Oh yes, it doesn't matter how good the screen actually is as long as you can tell people it's HD.
Samsung's SAMOLED and Nokia's CBD are much better on the eyes and in brighter light.

$110 billion in excess cash. Just sayin'.

The PR might be down since the lawsuits but the people it seems care not for such matters. Considering Android has an app store as well while microsoft is about to launch one intergrated into a desktop OS.... yeah.

I hate it as much as you do but it seems, on average, a closed system is much, much more profitable then a open one.

It still has a higher PPI than other phones. As for having a closed off ecosystem, it hasn't harmed them in the slightest. They have by far the best and largest mobile developer community by wide margin.

Tied for 7th place @ 326ppi
Iphone 4,4s,5

So yea, Iphones have the highest ppi than any other phone, if you get rid of those other 6.

Another thing is why would Apple give their loyal minions everything they want in one go? Apple knows they'll buy another one in 6 months with another 1 feature that they wanted, or didn't, or even the same exact thing with a different model number attached.

I agree with everything except removable battery. Apple makes the best batteries. Long lasting and don't really deteriate with time. I don't think there is a pooint for a removable battery.

Also more software features. If they don't want us to jailbreak then give us features they we don't need the jailbreak for.

1. INAPP Texting and Replying! (Really is it that hard to do? Top jailbreak feature)
2. Turn by Turn GPS - Do you really want people staring at a map while driving or would you prefer them to hear it. If it's included then no reason to jailbreak and get TomTom for free.
3. More options with ringtones and text tones!
4. Passcode lock sucks. Android lock is much better!
5. AsktoCall/AsktoText option!
6. Improved Group Messaging!
7. The weather icon should display the actual temperature! They have it in Cydia! easy fix!


Disappointed

Assuming the product spec leaks are accurate, I can't help but feel disappointed with the new iPhone 5. Apple has all that money and talent, and yet their newest product looks ...well, just like their last product, except slightly stretched. Yes I know there is more to it than that (improved/faster innards and such), but still. Perhaps I'm expecting too much of a smartphone, but this latest redesign just plain feels lazy to me. Apple doesn't seem to be giving much incentive to their current customers to stick around.

Smaller Connector?
Thinner?

Sound like they are copying both Samsung and HTC's latest phones.
Hopefully Samsung remembered to get a patent on phones with larger screens, and on thinner phones.

Why does dailytech have to try SO hard with misspending editorial titles just to get people to read the articles?! It's getting really annoying and sad. This title made it seem like its arriving the 12th not being announced the 12th. Why not something more accurate like

Apples "iphone5" confirmed for september 12th announcement"
But then many of us including myself would just skip this article because we have already been told the 12thnfor an announcement for a long time we don't need to read a whole other article confirming it especially one that purposely comes with a misleading title .
