This same error message appears when AT&T customers try to use the iOS Personal Hotspot feature and other iOS data tethering

It looks like AT&T might charge customers a fee for using the iOS 6’s FaceTime over 3G feature.

IOS 6, which is currently in beta, allows iPhones and iPads with cellular functionality to use FaceTime over 3G/4G. In previous versions of iOS, FaceTime was limited to Wi-Fi only. The new 3G/4G option was brought to the 3G network in an effort to make the FaceTime option more useful to customers.

However, when trying to use FaceTime over Cellular networks on AT&T iPhones in the latest beta of iOS 6, the following error message appears: To enable FaceTime over cellular on this account, contact AT&T at 611 or visit http://www.att.com/mywireless.

This same error message appears when AT&T customers try to use the iOS Personal Hotspot feature and other iOS data tethering.

Many reports claimed they tried to pull up the same error message using the Verizon network, but were unable to. It seems only AT&T will be controlling and charging for the feature.

"We're working closely with Apple on the new developer build of iOS 6 and we'll share more information with our customers as it becomes available," said AT&T in a statement regarding the potentially new FaceTime charges.

This is a stupid reason for posting but that apostrophe goes where the letters were taken away in this case it would be in front of the word 'droid not behind it. Unless of course you are talking about a Verizon Droid which uses a capital letter and no apostrophe since it is a name.

If the editor does not care to proof the articles half the time I figured lazy typing is o.k. for comments too ;)

This is where services like Ting can come in and help change the current model of charging for data then charging extra for using that data in certain ways (tethering, WiFi hotspot or Facetime).

Ting charges month-to-month, without contract, for the minutes and data you use within tiers and will automatically increase or decrease the tiers on your bill depending on your usage. Granted, it's on Sprint's network, but at least you can tether and WiFi hotspot within their TOS with no extra charges.

And be limited to CDMA only? No plz, I'd rather just pay the $45 for a sim card with unlimited on straight talk and swap out phones at my leisure.

It is still good to know as it is really the way pay per use should work.

Except that ting is an absolute freaking ripoff for data and texting. $60 for 3GB? $8 for 2000 texts? No options for unlimited on either? $6 extra per device? Is that a freaking joke? It roams on Sprint, how in the world do they justify charging MORE than Sprint without subsidizing the phones??

There are some good no-contract plans out there but Ting is not one of them. The business model of automatically switching between all of the plans is neat but the prices are still a complete ripoff.

Does this apply to 4G?

Ok, so 3G they may start charging for using Facetime.

But what about the iPhone 4s and "4G" ?

Will 4G users be charged also?

The iPhone 4s is not a 4G device. Why would 4G users be charged for something that only iPhone users can do?

So dumb

This is the same as if the water company charged more for using water to water the grass rather than drinking it, or a power company charging more for electricity if used for an XBox as opposed to a PS3.

Nope.

A more proper analogy would be, previous xbox and ps3 owners were charged a flat per/hour fee for their electricity use. But since the ps3 consumes 20% more electricity per hour than the xbox does, the ps3 will be charged 20% more in electricity charges.

Pointless

Never understood the point of Facetime. Skype is cross platfrom compatible and free. There is no compelling business case for Facetime to exist, apart from idiots not knowing about Skype.

If you think AT&T is evil...

If you think AT&T is evil stop paying them and go elsewhere. I get so tired of listening to people whine about cell carriers when they aren't at all interested in exploring all of the other options. Do you think that AT&T cares about your whining?? No, they only care if people start to jump ship and that is exactly what you should do. Put your money where your mouth is,

It's simple, people

Bandwidth is not an unlimited resource, there is a finite limit to bandwidth.

The more people who want to use more bandwidth, the more expensive it becomes, in order not to max out on the finite limit that exists.
