And 1 in 33 men would dump their girlfriend for a free iPad

In China some people are willing to literally give up an organ to get their hands on the coveted gadgets of Apple, Inc. (AAPL), the world's most valuable tech company.  But in America, Apple's top market would people really go that far?

The answer is apparently "yes".  A new poll by RoxyPalace.com, an online casino surveyed 600 people and found that 11 percent of single men would prefer a free iPad to a relationship.  The poll also found that of men who said they were in a relationship 3 percent said they would ditch their partner for an iPad.

A Roxy Palace spokesperson commented on the surprising figure, "There has been a huge amount of hype surrounding the iPad 3 and for many it's the ultimate gadget.  But instead of simply giving up their hard-earned cash it seems some men would be happy to remain on the shelf if it meant taking one home with them.  The Apple product has a wide variety of functions but even the latest version can't offer some of the things that a new romance can, but it seems many males are happy to forego this."

Granted there's a few things fishy about this poll.
  1. Its sample size is super-small
  2. While official (it's on the site's blog, here) details are lacking (how many men, how many women, citizenship status) and it could be a publicity stunt.
  3. It is the internet, so people can lie.
That said, Apple's fans tend to be very enthusiastic, so this number might not be that far off.  Podcast of various radio stations covering the store including callers claiming that their girlfriends (or boyfriends) had dumped them for either buying a non-Apple phone/tablet or for refusing to grant their significant other access to their Apple device, so there is some circumstantial evidence supporting the online casino's internet poll.

Some men would reportedly prefer an iPad to a relationship. [Image Source: Apple]

More supporting evidence comes from recent surveys which showed that 1 in 3 people would rather give up sex for a week than their phone, and a study that claimed Apple users were less likely to "get lucky" on their first date than users of Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Android.

5 in 10 are divorcees based on marriage stats.

Why is DT even reporting on a stupid poll taken from online casino goers? Like that is a great chunk of neutral population to take a poll from and actually care about the results.

Nope, while half of all marriages end in divorce, most people who get married stay married.

As way of explanation, the marriage stats are skewed by a minority of the population which repeatedly gets married and divorced. So half of all marriages result in divorce, but the majority of people who get married stay married.

And yet, I'm gay, never owned an Apple product and never will with better and cheaper alternatives available.

Plus, I'm an Enthusiast, I love my custom built PC with water cooling, pretty lighting, side windows, the works, so I'm probably a very very tiny minority.

But I can imagine the more flamboyant guys screaming over the iDevices. *Shudder*

Yes, but those cheaper alternatives aren't better.

For instance, I don't think Apple has a product with Eyefinity, Triple GPU's or water cooling as of yet. Actually... I know of no PC manufacturer that could provide me one cheaper than building it myself.

I never called the more feminine men feminine, I called them "flamboyant".
Their was no sexist or heterosexist remarks in my comment and nor' did I really intend it, I meant it in jest.

Besides, the rest of the world LOVES taking pot shots at my sexual orientation, so if I feel like making jokes about it, I think I am entitled too because I gotta' live with it like every other gay man.

No, it isn't. So-called "flaming" is nothing more than behavior in men that is considered too feminine for the accepted gender role.

"Nothing annoys me more than the huge flamers who think being gay needs to be shoved in the rest of the world's face."

That's the venerable "gays are OK as long as they don't exist" thinking.

When gay teens stop killing themselves in numbers that greatly exceed the norm, then you can whine about people being "PC" for wanting people to be treated with the respect they deserve.

You should check out the "It Gets Better" campaign and learn about the situation. Or, you can continue to think ignorant jokes are totally benign, simply because some gays don't want to make waves by objecting.

"It's just a joke" is the classic rationalization of bullies.

Wow, there really is no hope for you.

Yes some gay teens kill themselves and even if they were not gay, they probably would have had problems with life anyhow.

You can promote that we all need to be nice to gays (and I am), but isn't it time to start saying that life is not always fair and you had better get used to it?

As for jokes about gays, I learn most of them from my gay friends. They take full responsibility for their lifestyle and understand that there are some who don't like them for it, but feel that that is not their problem, live and let live.

If you can't take the heat you don't jump into the fire.

Ad hominem isn't a rebuttal.
quote:
Yes some gay teens kill themselves and even if they were not gay, they probably would have had problems with life anyhow.

Nice try at rationalization, but the problem for your attempt is that it's not backed up by the facts. The facts are:

1. The number of gay kids who kill themselves or attempt suicide is vastly disproportionate in terms of the average teen suicide rate. Homosexuality was proven to not be a mental disorder. It does not affect/impair mental health. Therefore, the gay youth suicide rate should not be higher than the rate for hetero youth.

2. Because the suicide rate is vastly higher for gay youth and homosexuality is not a mental disorder, social bigotry is to blame. Your attempt to shift that blame to the kids, victim blaming, fails.
quote:
You can promote that we all need to be nice to gays (and I am), but isn't it time to start saying that life is not always fair and you had better get used to it?

Another bankrupt rationalization. The fact is that that attitude, acquiescence to stasis, would have kept humanity living in caves. Progress happens, but it doesn't happen without honesty and work. "Life isn't fair" isn't honest in this context or intended to promote work toward greater justice. You want a slogan? "Life can be fairer."
quote:
As for jokes about gays, I learn most of them from my gay friends.

I'm sure Jewish Nazis were a comfort for Nazism's defenders, too. If you find that unnecessarily inflammatory, consider how a gay person feels when their fellow gays are used as ammunition.

1. Gays grow up in a heterosexist society and most of them try to fit in. That can entail the usage of homophobic/heterosexist jokes, slurs, ideology, and the like. It is perfectly possible for gay people to have internalized homophobia/heterosexism. In fact, you'll find plenty of examples. That doesn't excuse or justify it. The fact that many gays try to ingratiate themselves with a homophobic/heterosexist culture is not surprising and it does not justify the bias.

2. Jokes that are acceptable in one context are not always acceptable in another. Context is what determines whether a joke is offensive or not. When a gay person makes seemingly anti-gay jokes, chances are the joke's context is not anti-gay. However, when a gay person does this to ingratiate himself/herself with a heterosexual-dominant context, then it can be. This is why it's usually a bad idea for whites to make jokes using the N word but it's usually more acceptable for blacks to do so. While it can be said that such boundaries perpetuate racism/heterosexism, the bigger issue is the larger cultural bias. Refraining from making potentially hurtful jokes is a small price to pay given far more serious problems like teen suicide and general misery caused by heterosexism/homophobia.
quote:
They take full responsibility for their lifestyle

Homosexuality is not a disorder. It is not inferior to heterosexuality and thus homosexuals don't have a lifestyle to take responsibility for. You're misusing the word lifestyle, by the way. An American CEO, gay or not, has a vastly different lifestyle than an Australian aborigine, gay or not.
quote:
and understand that there are some who don't like them for it, but feel that that is not their problem, live and let live.

This is contradictory. First you say that they take "full responsibility", clearly suggesting that there is something to be responsible for. You back that up with the "understanding that there are some who don't like them for it". Then you say there is no need to take responsibility from the point of view of these gays because they feel it's not their problem.
quote:
If you can't take the heat you don't jump into the fire.

So, gay people should prevent themselves from being born so they won't have to deal with heterosexism/homophobia? Great solution. Or, people could stop making excuses for it.

Instead of helping the victims of abuse become stronger by learning to accept and excel at what they are, you would rather blame people who will not change their beliefs.

"You really are an idiot and I don't say that lightly."

Ad hominem is not a rebuttal. It's the refuge of someone lacking one.

"Instead of helping the victims of abuse become stronger by learning to accept and excel at what they are, you would rather blame people who will not change their beliefs."

So, gay people are supposed to be bullied because bullies are incapable of learning? If those bullies are so incapacitated, then maybe they should be in a psych ward.

"I feel sad for you. I will also point out that if you can't laugh when you are the butt of the joke, then you have issues yourself."

Tell that to the families of the dead kids. Tell them how sad you feel for their kids, and lecture them about bullying making people stronger.

With Internet access, you get porn and therefore sexual gratification. Also you get a kagillion other things. Also you get to look cool when carrying it around.

With a girl you sometimes get gratification. Also you get to pay for dinners/flowers, suffer emotional meltdowns, a gender that thinks your friends are dorks and those guy things you cherish (like farting while watching a football game drinking beer) are stupid and really immature.

No contest. You only really want a girl when you get older and decide to settle down and reproduce.

The only thing this actually tells you is: 1 in 10 men who frequent a specific online gambling site AND who are interested in wasting time taking online polls, would prefer an iPad to a girlfriend. Further, this isn't taking into account the wording of the question (i.e. people who aren't interested in women might skew these results) and other factors which could skew results. Seems clear that there's a good chance these numbers would only carry over to the population at large by pure chance.

Anyway, it would still be interesting to see a REAL scientific study on something like this. People are way to attached to electronics. Unhealthy IMO...

I would guess that more than 1 in 10 men would say they do not want a "relationship" and would rather just have fun.

If I had to choose between a free iPad or a girlfriend, I would pick a girlfriend. A girlfriend is not easy to get. Sure a free iPad is tempting, but come on. If you have patience, you can eventually save up enough money to buy an iPad and it does not matter you are paid minimum wage.

But it still won't be free, and everything is better when it's free.

So, no comments about the caption girl?

I am happily married to a woman hotter than the girl pictured, but I do enjoy the comedy of my fellow DTers. So where are the comments about this lovely girl?

I'll start it off with a weak one?

"Did they use that picture when they asked the question? Obviously not!"

I don't want anything Apple, but a choice between an Apple and that woman? I'll take the iPad. I can sell the iPad.

so pointless...

When there are "news" concerning a survey of 1 in 10 or 30 I cringe at the thought of having to live with these aholes. Seriously, to have to or want to write something about this when you're knowingly aware that it's pointless to start with...ah, nevermind. Have go to stick to my plan of staying away from stupid people! Long live Einstein vision!

Don't forget to use a condom!

...as noted, prolly 1 in 10 guys is gay anyway, and therefore thinks girls are gross.

At any rate, I think we can all agree that mankind is doomed at the moment that the Lucy Liubot is invented.

Once the utterly submissive sexbot hits the market, humanity will be extinct within a generation or two.

Apple = gay

On a Quick Note: That 1 guy out of ten is gay
