No four-bangers for U.S. Macans

Porsche has been doing pretty well selling four door cars and SUVs after decades as “just” a sports car maker. The Porsche Cayenne SUV has proven so popular that Porsche is going to add a smaller second SUV to its line called the Macan.
In Europe, the Macan will be offered with several engines, including four-cylinder units (which are not for U.S. consumption). For its U.S. launch, however, the $50,000 Macan S will be available with a twin-turbo 340hp 3.0-liter V6, while the $72,000 Macan Turbo will feature a twin-turbo 400hp 3.6-liter V6.
Word has now surfaced that Porsche will be bringing one of its diesel engines to the U.S. under the hood of the Macan in an effort to boost its “green” cred. The 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is the same engine used in the Cayenne.

The V6 diesel engine uses a single turbo and produces 258hp and 428 lb-ft of torque at 1750 rpm. The diesel version is expected to deliver 24mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
The diesel Macan is expected to land in 2015 and will be priced beneath both gasoline-engine versions. 
According to Car and Driver, the reason Porsche is not bringing the turbo four-cylinder engines to the U.S. is said to be a fear of cannibalizing sales of the Audi Q5 sibling that makes the bulk of its sales with four banger units.

All they need to do is make it $10,000 - $20,000 more for no reason. That way, if they sell any they're ahead and if they don't they're not cannibalizing anything. That's what GM always does when they want to sell the same car under two different brands.

Yep. There's really no reason for a 4 cyl Macan in the US. Every single V6 and diesel will be sold and then some. I expect this one to be their top seller before too long. If the starting price was closer to $40k, I'd pick one up. And with the weight at "only" 4100 lbs, I'd be inclined to get the diesel version too.

The Cayenne is currently their best seller. This will EASILY eclipse the Cayenne in sales.

The cannibalization threat is real, though. The Macan will definitely take away sales from the Cayenne, simply because current buyers drawn to the Porsche brand but wanting an SUV/crossover don't have any other choice.

i'm german, have always dreamed of owning a 911 one day, but ever since VW took over, that dream has been fading. i said back then that the day will come when we will see a porsche-badged golf, and the macan isn't far off. it's based on the tiguan/Q5 chassis, which itself is based on the golf... kinda like a CR-V is really just a civic station wagon with tall suspension.

and you have to think: porsche will of course make a profit on this car, but so will audi. and VW will make a profit on the tiguan. and the golf. so are you reallly just buying a premium golf here? no, because skoda and seat (VW's cheapo brands in europe) also sell cars based on the same platform, and those aren't exactly sold at a loss either. so what you are really buying here is a premium version of the next-gen skoda yeti... but you think yourself a porsche driver.

some will argue that porsche needs to do this in order to continue building sports cars, and that was true for the cayenne; but since the VW take-over that argument has become irrelevant. VW has the money to keep porsche focused on sports cars. all the yare doing here is squeeze out every last penny.
it's a sad day for car enthusiasts.

What's sad is that a car enthusiast needs an enthusiast brand to ONLY sell enthusiast cars. What sane company WANTS one of its sub-companies to be a perpetual loss leader? I wouldn't. There is ZERO dilution of their sports cars by the existence of the SUV's and sedans in their line up. Hell, Porsche has been trying to sell a sedan for DECADES! They saw the writing on the wall years ago. THANK GOD they don't have your foresight else they would've died a long time ago. I'm happy that my favorite car company is still around to make cars and not be some faded memory.

the independent porsche was the world's most profitable car company for several years before VW took over. i have no idea where your loss-leader thing comes from.

As a German, you should know more of why Porsche is no longer independent... or are you one of those that denies historical events?

They literally gambled away their independence in a failed hostile takeover attempt of VW partially due to family rivalry.

um... yes i know why they are now under VW ownership... and i haven't alluded to how that occurred at all. nor does it make any difference; how they got to where they are does not change where they ended up.

and FYI: the porsche family have been more involved with VW than porsche for decades. that was a decision made by ferry porsche himself in the 60's or 70's, in order to make sure that no one person from teh family could control the company. from then on, outsiders were hired as company leaders. the last one of those, wendelin wiedeking, tried to take a controlling stake in VW, miscalculated market conditions, and needed to have porsche be bailed out by VW.

He's right. He didn't post anything about why Porsche went independent. He just pointed out that they were the furthest thing from a "loss-leader" before or after VW took over, and there was no sign of Porsche dying.

You are wrong about the platform. The tiguan IS built on the golf platform. The q5 is based on the Audi MLB platform and it is not shared by the tiguan. ALSO the Macan is has 75% original Porsche Parts. Porsche did not compromise on the Macan. You are pretty much talking out your ass on all of this. I personally think the steering is a little numb on the q5 but its still a way more premium car than the tiguan. A vehicle the q5 shares nothing with. The Macan will be a brilliant car. For an SUV the cayenne drives better than any other SUV except for maybe the new range rover sport. Similarly expect the Macan to be a class leader for driving dynamics. Porsche has not lost focus.

yes, you are correct. i was confusing the Q5 with the Q3.
but you have to remember that the only major difference between VW and audi are the badges... the a4/a6 have shared the passat platform for many years, the phaeton is a steel version of the a8 (and the "bentley" continental is a turbocharged phaeton)... at some point, porsche will be no more than a VW marketing department.
i would have very much liked to see porsche take control of VW, and not the other way around.
and yes, one only reads good things about the cayenne, a car that is built in eastern europe, together with the VW touareg. but i'd still never buy one. a benchmark SUV is still a lousy handling vehicle compared to a real car.

Can a Cayenne really be called an SUV? Same for many vehicles with that nameplate. Until I see one outfitted with mudders and a winch I will consider it an SV since I don't see much "Utility" in the design. Landrover I would consider as having such a usage since they still lend themselves to good performance off road as well as on road.

So you are upset because Porsche and VW share some parts?
I haven't seen that hurt Ferrari and Maserati (both owned by Fiat) or Lambo or Bugatti (owned by VW).

In fact, there are very few independent exotic car makers out there - Pagani and McLaren come to mind. Not many though.

How about the planet with a country called USA where the Model S is outselling all luxury full-size sedans? The one where the Panamera is seeing plummeting sales?

This is all despite constrained production due and substantial wait times, soon to be rectified.

Weird, Porsche actually sold 7100 Panameras in 2012 and 4900 in 2013. Still a drop but I wonder where they got their numbers from. Also, I think it's still to early to say the Tesla S is taking sales away. I would look at the sales of different models of the same brand to see if there were any increases there. As popular as crossovers are getting I would not be surprised if people are just moving from one model to another.

The Forbes article was from earlier in the year (Jan-June), whereas your numbers are comparing Jan-Nov for 2012 and 2013. The data sets are consistent with each other.

You can look at Brandon's link above to see the overall sales. Porsche got a big jump from doubled Cayman/Boxster sales with the new 981 platform, Cayenne sales also went up a lot, and 911 sales were up a bit.

Only Panamera sales are down, so I think it's pretty obvious that Tesla took sales away from them.
