Japanese providers eye download limits for heavy users

The online porn industry is booming with people all across the world downloading movies and images from online sources. However, the proliferation and availability of porn has put a strain on Japanese mobile networks.

Bloomberg reports that the strain on Japanese networks, like the massive $74 billion DoCoMo network, from porn is prompting the consideration of download limits. Japanese carriers DoCoMo and KDDI Corp. say that the strain caused in part from pornographic movie downloads have caused limits to be placed on the heaviest users of the network.

Analyst Windsor Holden from Juniper Research told Bloomberg, "When you have unlimited data, you’re going to have an issue with capacity -- it’s an issue that’s been waiting to happen. It wouldn’t surprise me that it happens in Japan first because they’ve had 3G for so much longer."

3G networks came online in Japan years before they were offered in America. KDDI and DoCoMo aren’t alone in placing or considering limits on downloads -- Softbank Corp., the third largest Japanese provider and the exclusive iPhone provider, is also considering limits on downloads.

The mobile providers can’t see the types of downloads that customers are grabbing online, but the two top porn providers in Japan say that mobile downloads are driving revenue growth.

Yusuke Tsunoda from Tokai Tokyo Securities Co said, "Pornography will eventually open a debate about how carriers should modify their business model as data traffic swells. It may prompt even tighter access restrictions."

The Japanese providers allege that they receive numerous complaints from users about a slow network or stoppages around midnight, when use form heavy users spikes.

KDDI spokesman Keiichi Sakurai said, "We can’t see customers’ data but can surmise the biggest portion of it is probably movies. We can’t deny the possibility those movies include adult content."

Bloomberg reports that the official big earner for Japanese mobile networks is music downloads, but unofficially the biggest earner is porn downloads.

I would not ride the trains in Tokyo. Seriously. Porn downloads should take place at home.

That's just wrong, man.
Seriously, storage is so cheap now, why only 2TB?

Yea seriously, I have 2TB's inside my computer itself. No need for the NAS yet.

Maybe it will stop them from pinching women's bums on the subway. What do you expect from a nation where you can buy used panties from vending machines.

Seriously though, isn't this just another excuse to impose ridiculous data caps on premium priced accounts.

not all are downloading videos...a fair number are using their phones to record upskirt videos of school-girls... which are in turn downloaded by the other 3G users.

:)

I think that Japanese guys are feeling the pinch from all those white guys in US and Europe importing the desirable japanese women for themselves. :)

Seriously tho, why is this even news? Porn and the sex industry has been putting a lot of things on the map:

- Internet
- Russia
- The Web
- DVDs
- Craigslist
- HD DVD / BluRay
- Personal HD Camcorders
- Cellphone Cameras

If it weren't for porn we'd all still be using dial-up and the web would be all text-based. Those 3G networks just need to improve their staying power and deal with the porn...them japs need their KDDI Porn. =D

Maybe providers shouldn't sell unlimited bandwidth if they can't provide unlimited bandwidth. I know just about every provider oversells their service, assuming everyone won't be using it at once and that "unlimited bandwidth" is mostly just a marketing ploy. However, unlimited is how it's advertised... if the network is getting overloaded and they want to keep selling unlimited bandwidth, maybe it's time to upgrade the network again?

I think that these mobile companies are monopolistic bastards for one. They offer unlimited traffic because many users don't download extensively all the time, they just use the phone in a basic fashion. But there is a strong mobile network presence here, which for some user replaces "the internet" all together. I got the iPoo 3G and downloaded 1GB of cellular data in a month and 1% of that was porn. The bill was $18000 USD with a $17940 discount.

News Exaggeration

It seems that they are exaggerating this just a bit so that companies can have another reason to put data caps on everyone. They always claim its one thing or another that is about to clog there entire network. And now they think that people won't speak up against it for fear of being shamed.

This is just another excuse to avoid extending and improving the networks... They rather limit the user than expand their operativity, instead of looking at the future and realizing that bandwidth needs are only going to grow... *sigh* They´re happy with the money they´re making, I guess.... BTW sorry for my bad english, not a native speaker :)
