Pokemon is getting textured 3D environments, at last.  (Source: YouTube)

The game features a number of new critters.  (Source: YouTube)

It also hints at infrared connectivity (possibly via cartridge add on) and possibly 3G wireless connectivity coming to the Nintendo DS.  (Source: YouTube)
New trailer reveals series will finally be making the leap to 3D -- partially

Pokemon is the second bestselling franchise of all time, having sold over 200 million copies worldwide.  That places it narrowly behind Mario (222 million copies) and well ahead of third place Tetris and The Sims (125 million copies, each).  The franchise's incredibly addictive formula of combining the pet monster and RPG genres has proven pure gold and shows no signs of slowing down.

Now Nintendo is preparing to yet again reinvent the series with the upcoming Spring 2011 release of Pokemon Black and White for the Nintendo DS (September 2010 in Japan).

The new title is perhaps most noteworthy in that it will bring 3D modeled and textured backgrounds to the series' handheld titles for the first time.  The graphics seem reminiscent of certain PlayStation titles in that they feature a 2D sprite drawn on top of a mostly 3D-rendered background.  Monster battles will also feature some mild 3D effects by the looks of it.

As if the Pokemon franchise needed more tools to addict our youth, it is now offering increased networking to allow gamers worldwide to compete against each other.  From a trailer video its clear that the game can connect via Wi-Fi.

The game's cover beasts have been announced to be White Yang Pokémon Reshiram (????
Reshiramu) for Pokémon Black and the Black Yin Pokémon Zekrom (???? Zekuromu) forPokémon White.   The game features a host of new monsters and the return of many fan favorites, as usual.

For Pokemon fans, about the only disappointment is that the franchise continues to lag behind Nintendo's hardware releases.  While the Nintendo 3DS will launch this holiday season, Pokemon won't get any 3D-display loving until at least mid next year (no dedicate 3DS support has been announced for Black/White).  So you will soon be able to get your latest Pokemon fix, just don't expect it to blow you away with 3D-display technology.

A full trailer of the upcoming title [in Japanese] can be found here.

Is Pokemon still relevant to the very young
By Taft12 on 7/30/2010 1:59:09 PM , Rating: 3
Do little kids really dig Pokemon anymore (say among ages 5-8)? I am too old to have ever really come into contact with Pokemon in the first place and still don't know the a thing about it, but it's been over 10 years now... Young children must have different fad by now?

The game is actually pretty good if you are into the whole child aged cartoon strategy games. It's not something I have played in a really long time, I played a few of the games on gameboy and GB color, never played the card game. I only watched the cartoon when it first came out because it got stupid really quick lol.

The entire concept does wonders for developing strategic skill; childish or not.

I didn't realize until around 2 years ago that the game came before the tv show. Explained a lot about why the show felt so weird. It also made me appreciate how amazingly creative the Pokemon team was to make such a world out of thin air for such an underpowered device like the Gameboy

That's only true for Japan. Game came out in 96 in Japan, anime in 97, and the US games came out in 98.

My son, 6, plays a bit on his DS Lite. My daughter, 10, plays it more. But mostly on road-trips or when she isn't playing Free Realms.

My daughter is 5 and likes it. She prefers Ben 10 and Clone Wars but likes Pokemon just fine.

In my case the answer is 'yes'. My son has been playing these Pokemon series on his DS for about 2-3 years (he's now 8). He still likes the animated series on Cartoon Network and has a book or two about Pokemon. He has played the Pokemon Ranger, Diamond/Pearl, Platinum, and Soul Silver. I believe he has also played a Pokemon game on the WII, which alone is not good, but he likes to upload his Pokemon from the DS to the WII which makes the game somewhat better. He's already been looking forward to the Black/White series and has already shown me the 'previews' on You Tube.

Unfortunately..

Tho it's not just the little kids who play. My 16yr old stepdaughter, her 17yr old boyfriend and about 4 of their other 15-18yr old friends all play it endlessly.

Well, MY kids still love it. Between the Marioverse and Pokemon Universe, my kids are all about wrapped up by Nintendo. Smart little fiends they are... Nintendo that is. :)

Not just for Kids...

More than just kids play Pokemon. Though, less and less older people play Pokemon after each new generation now, as the new Pokemon keep becoming crappier and crappier. The new starters for Black and White look like shit.

The older a series gets, the harder is gets to keep it original and the more it is simply milked for money.
Zoids is a good example, starts out with good story and characters but ends with cramming as much as possible into a new series for the sake of selling toys.

I don't know about you, but my future boar of angry flaming is certain to be all sorts of awesome. They had similar complaints about my nuclear powered penguin, but it's still great.

For the life of me I cannot remember the name of that comic; I know EGM are the ones that run it.

That sounds a bit like dan and hsu's style, but I haven't read EGM in an eternity, I may be wildly off base.

I'm 19 and fully intend to get this game. The Pokémon series is known not only for it's addictive gameplay and being kid-friendly on the surface, but also for being an extremely well balanced game for competitive online play. "Hardcore" players have put countless hours into training up their team and developing a strategy for online competitions.

There's ANOTHER new one?
By DuctTapeAvenger on 8/2/2010 11:01:50 AM , Rating: 2
Looks like I'll need to borrow my Mom's DS for a couple weeks.

I played Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Fire Red (or something like that) several years ago (maybe 6th grade and on). I got pearl (I think) a year ago and gave up on it. Now I'm playing a Sapphire ROM on my Android phone, and greatly enjoying it for whatever reason. It's fun to end the day playing a game that reminds me of a time in my life where my biggest concern was beating the Elite Four.

Hi. My name is DuctTapeAvenger, I'm 23, and I play Pokemon.

I know what you mean with the biggest concern being the elite four. I know I have played red, blue, yellow, silver, gold, crystal, ruby, platnuim, soulsilver, and heartgold

News?

I don't see anything in this article that couldn't have been said when this was making the rounds many months ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xau6kcxyOLs

Also, the article's title is very unprofessional. It's still just a game and it doesn't do anything more to "addict" kids.

The title tries to make it sound like that's not what every Pokemon game in the past has tried (and mostly succeeded) to do....

Wow, this article is pointless

You guys are idiots. Pokemon has had 3D ever since the first DS incarnation. At best, they have said that Black/White are getting 'increased 3D affects'. The games have also pandered to children since their inception. So between being plain out wrong, and pointing out the obvious, you guys have posted the most worthless article I've read... wait, I didn't finish reading it, the most worthless article I've seen in months.
