Destroying CD/DVD's, one laser at a time

Plextor today announced its new PlexEraser PX-OE100E CD/DVD destroyer. The new PlexEraser drive delivers a secure environmentally friendly method of destroying CD/DVD discs to security-conscious companies and individuals. The standalone unit operates without the need of a PC and is an alternative to disc shredders that are currently available. Plextor believes the PlexEraser will find its use in finance, government/military, research industries and companies with sensitive data.

The Plextor PlexEraser PX-OE100E destroys CD/DVD discs by using a laser beam that kills off data recording portions of optical discs. According to Michael Arbisi, vice president of channel says, “Physically breaking the discs means the organic dye can escape, which can damage the environment.” Discs that have been put through the PlexEraser PX-OE100E are rendered unrecoverable and safe to throw away in a regular fashion, though the discs can be run through a CD/DVD shredder for increased security.

Eight types of CD/DVD’s are supported with the PlexEraser PX-OE100E drive including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL discs. Smaller 8cm discs are also supported by the PlexEraser PX-OE100E as well. As far as timing goes, Plextor claims the average data destroying time is around three minutes for single-layer CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs while dual-layer discs take a little longer at around six minutes.

In addition to its data destroying capabilities, the Plextor PlexEraser PX-OE100E has a 35 decibel noise output and low power consumption. The device is also labeled with a bright orange tray and bright yellow warning stickers to prevent the accidental destruction of discs.

The PlexEraser PX-OE100E is expected to ship to distributors next month with an M.S.R.P. of $249.99 USD. It will be available in North and South America and have a one year warranty with unlimited toll-free technical support. The PlexEraser was unofficially announced earlier this year.

Did I miss something or isn't that some kind of contradiction? If you run it thru a shredder for extra security, can't the dye escape and hurt the environment? And if your going to shred it, why do you need this device? Really seems like a answer looking for a question no one has asked.

I think one needs to understand how this thing actually works (the nitty-gritty details), before we can answer this interesting question.

Some people might be too paranoid about data security but could careless about the environment. Burn it, shred it, no tracks :D

One is quoted, the other one isn't. Meaning, the quoted came from the people of Plextor, the one not quoted is the news reporters statement

That's what I thought. It is a contradiction when they say the burned disk is unrecoverable and safe to throw away, but at the same time shredding the disk afterwards increases security. If the shredding increases security, then what insecurity does it remove? What exactly is still recoverable from the unshredded disk?

I'm not an environmental activist but isn't just throwing the disc away to begin with, shredded or shredded, bad for the environment? Its not like discs are biodegradable to begin with. Like the dye escaping is that much worse if you shred it.

To me this seems like a pretty pointless product. But I guess someone will buy it.

You can buy a microwave for a fraction of the cost of these.

Nuke your proN, then make a nice cup of steaming Ramen noodles.

Plus microwaving CD's is far more fun then erasing or even shredding them.

3m-6m per disc? Who is going to sit there and do that. I guess summer students could be useful for something after all.

Fire proves to be the best means of destroying things. Be it paper or electronic files, nothing beats the security of the firepit out back.

I agree as far as CD/DVD/Floppy/Paper ect. But as for hard drives it isn't hot enough to actualy destroy the data. I have heard of some people using thrmite for doing it and it working well and also I have heard of some big time hackers the FBI caught using a hard drive case that with the push of a switch made a large EMP burst that scrambled the data.

I believe they are justifying the extreme markup with the same logic that intel and amd justify they much higher server cpu prices...this is a business product that business are willing to shell out for to remain compliant with HIPAA and whatever other regulations are coming down the pipe.

Plextors issue more with the fact that they are more known as a consumer grade product and businesses that are willing the blindly drop 250 for this product are more likely to do it with HP, IBM, etc. etc. not plextor.
