The PlayStation Phone’s state of existence varies according to who you ask

The PlayStation Phone is going to be something that will just be a rumor until the day that it’s officially announced by Sony (or Sony Ericsson).

Last week, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe COO Jim Ryan said to the Economic Times of India that a PlayStation Phone is “definitely plausible” and that it would be “hugely intellectually seductive to have a console-oriented phone.”

Apparently, those comments were enough for the media to pull out their patented “jump to conclusions” mat, and once again claim that Sony plans to introduce a PlayStation Phone. But really, it’s not just the media – it’s the consumers too that are expecting a PlayStation Phone.

As expected, Sony quickly denied any such product in development and said that Ryan was misquoted. Jim Ryan was in fact misquoted by the Economic Times of India about this issue,” a Sony UK spokesperson told CVG, adding, “We do have talks with other arms of the Sony family about various topics but I can confirm we are not currently working together on the creation of a PlayStation Phone.”

Given Sony’s habit it dipping into nearly every area of consumer electronics, it would be foolish to believe that there hasn’t been any thought put into a PlayStation Phone. The truth is probably closer to the fact that there isn’t yet a prototype device that the company is satisfied in carrying the PlayStation brand, but it’s a safe bet that there’s being some R&D devoted to such a device.

After all, Sony Ericsson has spoke out on its efforts in improving the gaming experience on its cell products – and those efforts will see the light of day with or without PlayStation branding.
