Netflix streaming discs should be making their way to PS3 users who signed up in days

Late last month, DailyTech reported that Netflix instant streaming would be coming to the PlayStation 3 courtesy of a "streaming disc" provided by Netflix. At the time, Netflix said that the discs would begin shipping in November and that customers would have full access to the streaming library that has been available to Xbox 360 owners for quite some time.

Netflix CEO and founder Reed Hastings championed the move stating, “As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members. As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Staying true to its word, Netflix is now in the process of shipping the discs to users. Those that have already signed up to receive their streaming discs should begin receiving them as early as tomorrow (see picture on the right).

The streaming disc is merely a band-aid solution to quickly bring Netflix to PS3 users. According to Netflix, full integration with the PS3 XMB is coming next year.

While you might have the added inconvenience of having to load a disc, at least with the PS3 there isn't an additional charge like there is with XBOX live.

Give me a freakin break. I pay for LIVE whether there is Netflix on it or not & honestly, PS3 online should be free, besides, you can stream on your PC with no extra charge. Money well spent as far as I am concerned. I certainly would not pay for PSN if Sony charged a fee.

I use the service on my 360, but what the he--, & I signed up for the discs for my PS3, got the email so looking forward to it. Hopefully, there will be some work around so you don't have to have the disc in the console, but this is great. I love Netflix & up next they will be launching on the Wii.

Supposedly it makes use of BD-Live. At least that's what I've heard. Netflix uses either Flash or silverlight via your browser from what I know. So I assume the disc will provide a similar functionality.

IDK, but what's the point of streaming if you need a disc? Can't they just issue an update from Sony or something and include it in the PS3 firmware?

supposedly it's a way around the netflix-xbox exclusivity agreement.

BTW, Got my disc and love it. It's a much MUCH better interface than PlayOn. I just leave the streaming disc in unless I want something else. You'd have to pop in the game or BR movie anyways, so what's the big deal?

As for the HD question, I did see an "HD" icon on some of the shows and I did see reference that PS3 would have access to the "same collection" as xbox (which includes HD content) so I'd say yes.

This is only a temporary measure and the next major system update will add all of the required functionality for Hulu and Netflix to the OS.

The Netflix streaming collection contains very few titles in the top 100 list. Nice if you're into documentaries from the '80s though.

of course there's not much from the top 100. But there's tons of great movies and a lot of current TV shows in there.

How about Hounddog? Released Sept 2008. That's on streaming. Narnia, pineapple express, pearl harbor, outsourced, the house bunny, orgazmo, bedtime stories (also 2008). Those are fairly decent and/or recent.

It's not the cream of the crop, but I'd rather watch current blockbusters on BR in DTS HD than via streaming anyways. This just lets me watch things inbetween discs that I wouldn't bother with otherwise.

Documentaries from the 80's it is NOT.
