Plus a few whacky Canadians decide to smash a PS3 in front of wide-eyed fans

“Finally, the wait is over,” is probably the first thought on the minds of many eager PlayStation 3 campers across North America after sitting outside store fronts for hours, if not days.

Chris Toribio was the first to receive a PlayStation 3 at Sony’s premiere launch event at the Metreon in San Francisco.

“I’m going to go home and dream about it,” said Toribio according to Dean’s blog. “I’m going to go sleep. It was way worth it. I met a whole lot of people. The publicity is a good experience for me.”

When it came his turn to pick up his console, he chose to do so without picking up a game to go along with it. He explained that he was too tired for gaming, instead preferring to just watch the Ricky Bobby pack-in movie instead.

While the wait is over for those whose patience paid off, the waiting game continues for the rest of the crowd who were greater than the number of machines in stock. After hints of reduced launch numbers which many fans refused to believe, Sony COO Jack Tretton confirmed that there were fewer units shipped to stores than the original target of 400,000. While official numbers are unavailable, the shortfall is expected to be in the tens of thousands.

“This is not a perfect science manufacturing this device,” Tretton said to Mercury News, referring to the manufacturing issues surrounding the Blu-ray Disc drive.

Sony hopes to replenish supplies of PlayStation 3 as soon as possible, with the second shipment of consoles rumored to arrive as soon as next week.

Meanwhile, thousands of PlayStation 3 are starting to hit online auction sites such as eBay. Some bids have hit absolute jokes at $89 million, while others remain ridiculous but plausible. Nevertheless, the average person who sells his or her PlayStation 3 on eBay will likely see a two- or three-fold return on investment.

Sadly, the fears surrounding PlayStation 3 shortages have driven some store locations to complete chaos. The following is a list of several unfortunate incidents from the launch:

The PlayStation 3 also played center to a couple media stunts. One such stunt came from magazine PC Gamer, who approached those who were waiting in line at the Metreon to swear off PlayStation 3, promising that he or she would never, ever own the console in exchange one completely tricked-out Falcon Northwest gaming PC. It worked.

As part of an ongoing series, the guys behind Smash My PlayStation 3 camped out for days at a Best Buy in Toronto, only to acquire the machine and smash it into oblivion in front of onlookers right outside the store. Watch the video.

This illustrates how sheep like PS3 people are

It's simply amazing how ignorant people who go postal over PS3s are. I realize most consumers are dumber than rocks and that the sellers of this garbage manipulate these clueless people like sheep, but you'd think if they have enough money to buy a PS3 or Xbox that they'd have enough money for therapy.

What a waste of humanity.

Most of them are spending their savings or putting it on a credit card.

And yes these people are truly pathetic. If owning a game console means more to you than being a decent human being, then you don't deserve to live.

True, alot of people are camping out to resell it... But to who? There are a great deal of total losers that are willing to pay the $2000 price to have one of these early that these re-sellers are selling to.

Its really scary. This is another one of those reasons why some people in other parts of the world hate Americans and think we are too disconnected from reality.

- Printers that print custom patterns directly onto cakes
- Therapy for house pets
- Segway - yes its a personal walking device
- Violence over a console game

Actually the $2000 price seems to be high on ebay right now. Things are setting down now that there soo many on there. They seem to be selling between 800 an 1300 for the most part now, some higher but many are not sold at all.

By Milliamp on 11/18/2006 8:58:43 PM , Rating: 2
Ebay has reviews sections for items and on it they track the average selling price.

I can't find the link now but the last time I saw it, it said $1,4500

The real disconnect from reality is idiots in elected positions who blame the manufacturer for individuals acting barbaric and their own inability to control it. Not to mention the press that parrots this thinking without question. My neighbor mentioned that she thought Sony should be held responsible for some teenager acting violent. This type of absolute lack of reason and personal responsibility is the clearest sign of our disconnect from reality.

Of course, the US definitely does not have a monopoly on this sort of thinking.

So easy to sit here and blame where it is safe I guess.

You're pathetic for camping out in line overnight to get one and you're an idiot for buying one on ebay.

Since we are all in to blaming somebody, who should we blame for this no-win situation??

The real losers are the ones who take time to insult people buying PS3s on internet forums for absolutely no reason. If you don't want a PS3 or an Xbox, vote with your wallet, flinging meaningless insults over the internet does no one any good, your words are an utter waste of bandwidth.

Please everyone, remember, this is a free country. If you don't like something, don't buy it, but don't criticize people who have different desires, because then you look like an ignorant jerk.

Sure thing champ - what you don't seem to realize is that people were behaving in a CRIMINAL manner in an attempt to get a PS3. When posting on the internet that criminal are retards is illegal, maybe your argument will have some mertit. Until then, I think the people resorting to crime to get a PS3 are fair game for flaming, sorry.

Pretty much just endorising what another poster already said.

Just in my own words.

I think the real anger is over the fact that in some cases there are select idiots who were criminally trying to attain one -- inciting fear, employing intimidation tactics and in some cases actually inflicting injury on people who legitimately got a PS3.

I have no sympathy for those thugs and they should be drug around the block a few times off the bumper of my car....

So for those idiots I don't feel one bit bad that the behavior of camping and acting like complete idiots gets flamed.

Go cry a river.

Our Best Buy had 28 units. A friend of mine, who is also an employee, was with some friends at the front of 42 person line (as of Thursday night at around 10). People kept asking him how many there were, and since he isnt allowed to say he just told people at the end of the line 'I cant tell you exactly how many we have, but I do know we dont have enough for you guys to one.' Despite multiple other people telling them they are wasting their time, they stayed. They froze their butts off in the cold, fog filled night to get NOTHING.

By GhandiInstinct on 11/18/2006 3:43:23 PM , Rating: 1
Apparently not only are you risking your health by not sleeping for hours and standing in the cold, but you're now going to be risking your life as long as manufacturers like Sony release really limited supplies of consoles.

So is it worth your life to potentially make a grand or two? Or is it worth it to play as crappy as they get first gen games?

Like the original poster said, they need therapy but sadly there aren't enough therapists alive to treat all the people that need it, these idiots need to be standing outside in lines of therapist clinics not Electronic stores.

Greed. Pure and simple. People are beating and shooting each other over a console! This seems to happen every holiday season over whatever item that reaches "gotta have it" status. This is normally the behavior you'd expect to see when you throw a pork chop to a pack of starving dogs, but instead it becomes expected at shopping malls every November. I guess you can never underestimate people's desire to be cool or to make a quick buck and avoid real work.

This is what Sony planned...

Last month, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) co-chairman Jack Tretton admitted the launch allocations were more a "target" than a precise logistical statistic, and as we've noted before, there's an advantage in being able to claim stores sold out on the launch day and consumers were left disappointed - it stresses the apparent popularity of the product.

This above is from one of my previous comments.
What we are seeing/hearing/reading today was expected & preplanned.
Sony wanted the launch day to be just this-people camping out ,violence, sold out notices, high resale prices on E bay,
etc etc
Its FREE PUBLICITY from TV Channels to WEB sites-
whilst Sony ACTS the rest REACTS.

Maybe I'm not completely clear of what you're saying... Why the heck would Sony want all the bad press, given the recent bad news (rootkit, battery recalls)

Yeah one can argue that if Sony released enough products to meet demand, then probably people wouldn't camp out hoping to sell one on ebay. But it's the PEOPLE that CHOOSE what to do with the PS3 after purchasing it, not SONY.

PS3 mayhem

I agree with a lot of the people here - you just have to shake your head and wonder and some of the stuff that's going on.

On the other hand though, at least these consoles are *worth* something. Wasn't there a lady that got nearly trampled to death for a $30 DVD player on black friday a couple years ago? And people were doing the same kinds of things for the original Tickle-Me-Elmo.

RE: PS3 mayhem
By Lord Evermore on 11/18/2006 9:11:44 PM , Rating: 2
Well, arguably, getting a DVD player at a big discount at least saves you money (not worth getting trampled of course). PS3 buyers are rioting in order to be given the chance to blow several hundred dollars. It's like cutting into the line for rectal exams. Given by a pirate with only hooks for hands.

Pushing, fighting, rioting, those things should be reserved for really big things. Like trying to get out of the cities when the aliens invade. With the riots over buying toys, sporting events, and the like, people have blown their wad. They'll have to turn cannibal necrophiliac in order to really show how upset they are during an alien invasion.

15 k for a machine worth 600?

Stupid to pay 15K? Sure. But, is paying for a private jet to watch the total eclipse of the sun silly with a few close friends? Yes. Waste of money? Yes. Is buying an AMG Mercedes silly when a stock Mercedes will do? yes.

Life is full of folks doing "stupid" things. Just be careful, every once in awhile we become one of those "stupid" folks who spend OUR money in foolish ways.

10 years ago I spent 5K on a cutting edge 386, with 2 SCSI HD running WIN98. I loved every minute of it!!!!!!!! It was a very stupid waste of money.

Remember, you cannot take it with you.

For 15K I could get 2 pieces of Xeon Quad Core(Cloverton), Supermicro X7DA3, 8GB FBDIMMs, FireGL Crossfire, and a few of SCSI Harddisks.

Boston Mayor

While some may say Sony contributed here by creating hype and then not suppying enough for the demand, ultimately ps3 was not the problem. The people were the problem, they are the ones that acted stupidly. And quite frankly, I hold the Boston police responsible. They knew or at least should have known that there would be problems and its the polices job to provide security in such situations. Okay im mostly speaking in general, like with the robberies and shootings; in a mall the mall and thier security should have been more responsible in preparing, such as providing ropes for a line. But the police provide security for parades and sporting events; they even provide security and traffic directing for the local megachurch on wednesday and sunday(it has like twenty thousand members). Why should this be any different? And how can Sony be responsible for peoples retarded actions while greedily clamoring for...a friggin video game system?!

ps-I am an antifanboi and refuse to ever purchase another Sony product since the rootkit BS.

I'm a huge gamer, I love games... but I sure as hell didn't stand in line for 2 weeks and deal with all those crazy ass people to get my hands on one. I have a life.

And the guy who bought one and sold it on Ebay for 14,000 dollars?!?! The only thing I have to say to that guy is, kudos for taking advantage of all the other pathetic human beings out there who have 14k to throw around on a stupid console, which could have been used for charity. And shame on you for being a greedy waste to society.

And for the people trying to sell it for 89million. I'm not sure if that's "funny" or if you're 1 out of the thousands of people trying to scam people on Ebay. Knock it off, you're taking up space on Ebay.
