The Nintendo Wii is played less than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 is played less than the original Xbox

The PlayStation 2 was the most played home video game console of 2008 according to a Nielsen study of trends among Americans. The results of the study were compiled into several top 10 rankings. For video game consoles, Nielsen calculated the usage minutes of all consoles found in the home as a percentage and the PlayStation 2 came out on top at 31.7%.

The Xbox 360 was a distant second at 17.2%, the Nintendo Wii was third at 13.4%, the original Xbox was 9.7% and the PlayStation 3 was at 7.3%. The Nintendo GameCube made the list at 4.6% and the remaining amount was grouped in to the “Other” category and accounted for 16.2%.

Data was measured from January to October 2008. According to Nielsen “other” includes "any other console found in the home" and it appears portable hardware like the Nintendo DS or the Sony PSP were not included in the research.

According to VGChartz, sales estimates the Nintendo Wii has sold 20.85 million units in the U.S. , the Xbox 360 has sold 15.71 million, and the PlayStation 3 has sold 7.43 million. It is interesting to note the Nintendo Wii is played less than the Xbox 360 despite the significant lead in units sold. Another interesting note is the original Xbox still sees more usage than the PlayStation 3 despite the latter being 2 years in to its lifecycle and has a growing list of hit exclusive software titles.

Predictably the Nielsen study also found that World of Warcraft was the most played PC game title of 2008 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was second. Old favorites such as the original Sims, Sims 2, and Diablo 2 also made the top ten list.

How do they work that out? Online games? sample sizes? I understand that the PS2 can run PS1 games and DVDs as well, but everybody that I know has long forgotten about the PS2 and have replaced them with WII's, Xbox 360's etc. Perhaps there's a massive PS2 cult involved in the sample or something. (I'm not against the PS2, just from personal experience I don't quite understand how it's so popular.)

People sign up to be part of the Nielson surveys. They list what game systems they play and how many hours they play them, then send the information in. It's the same way they calculate TV ratings.

People forget too that there's still a lot of people out there who either can't afford a new console or don't have an HDTV. PS2 also appeals heavily to casual gamers given it's $120 price point and huge game library.

i thought that for tv ratings they install equipment that tracks viewing habits in volunteers' houses (joe averages of their respective demography).

100+ million plus consoles... someone ought to play them. I am looking to replace my broken ps2 with another one because most of the games on ps3 are more expensive and are sequels of games I haven't finished playing on the ps2 (silent hill, jak, ratchet and clank, gt, colin mcrae). Would be looking for ps3 if it had backwards compatibility.

i've heard that here in england they've used a box which logs viewing habits but the survey method is obviously the easiest. i haven't heard of anyone having one of those boxes but it is not far fetched when you think we used to have such things as detector vans that can tell if you have a tv and if you are watching a terrestrial channel.

apparently those vans still exist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/sto...

if you own a tv in england you have to pay for a tv license.

I participated in this survey. I signed up in December 2007. The results are on par with what I submitted. I used my PS2 more than anything else because my other console (a Wii) didn't have rock band or guitar hero at the time. My household used the hell out of the PS2 through March-April. I purchased a XBOX 360 as soon as the Arcade model released sometime around March, then we got Rock Band (and later Rock Band 2) for 360. Another game we played a lot on 360 was Soul Calibur 4 (August-September) and many XBOX live multiplayer games like Bomberman, Worms, Tetris, etc.

We used the Wii very little for most of 2008 because nothing significant was released for it aside from Smash Bros. However, one of my roommates uses it excluseively because she likes the simplicity and party aspect.

Overall, though, PS2 offered the lowest cost-of-entry into the Guitar Hero/Rockband community, and thats why in my case it was so heavily used.

in the largest markets (about the top 50), meters are used. meters 'read' the channel/source being viewed and distinguish the person(s) watching. in smaller markets, paper surveys are used.

even though i used to work nielsen, i always found their methodology flawed since anyone who would let them install the meter (which is very invasive) and monitor their viewing is a bit crazy and thus the ratings are skewed by folks who aren't like most of us.

when a different nielsen division started doing internet ratings using a meter system, their data indicated that porn sites were the most visited by ages 6-12 between 2am-9am. keep that in mind when evaluating their data.

My Gamecube still gets some play too, but they're built like rocks and will probably last until long after we no longer care.

# 115GFLOPS Theoretical Peak Performance for 360 CPU
# 218GFLOPS Theoretical Peak Performance for PS3 CPU.

And thanks to the efficiency of the 360 GPU’s unified shader architecture and this 10MB of EDRAM the GPU is able to achieve 4XFSAA at no performance cost. ATI and Microsoft’s goal was to eliminate memory bandwidth as a bottleneck and they seem to have succeeded. If there are any pc gamers out there they notice that when they turn on things such as AA or HDR the performance goes down that’s because those features eat bandwidth hence the efficiency of the GPU’s operation decreases as they are turned on. With the 360 HDR+4XAA simultaneously are like nothing to the GPU with proper use of the EDRAM. The EDRAM contains a 3D logic unit which has 192 Floating Point Unit processors inside. The logic unit will be able to exchange data with the 10MB of RAM at 2 Terabits a second. Things such as antialiasing, computing z depths or occlusion culling can happen on the EDRAM without impacting the GPU’s workload.

Xenos writes to this EDRAM for its framebuffer and it’s connected to it via a 32GB/sec connection (this number is extremely close to the theoretical because the EDRAM is right there on the 360 GPU’s daughter die.) Don’t forget the EDRAM has a bandwidth of 256GB/s and its only by dividing this 256GB/s by the initial 32GB/s that we get from the connection of Xenos to the EDRAM we find out that Xenos is capable of multiplying its effective bandwidth to the frame buffer by a factor of 8 when processing pixels that make use of the EDRAM, which includes HDR or AA and other things. This leads to a maximum of 32*8=256GB/s which, to say the least, is a very effective way of dealing with bandwidth intensive tasks.

In order for this to be possible developers would need to setup their rendering engine to take advantage of both the EDRAM and the available onboard 3D logic. If anyone is confused why the 32GB/s is being multiplied by 8 its because once data travels over the 32GB/s bus it is able to be processed 8 times by the EDRAM logic to the EDRAM memory at a rate of 256GB/s so for every 32GB/s you send over 256GB/s gets processed. This results in RSX being at a bandwidth disadvantage in comparison to Xenos. Needless to say the 360 not only has an overabundance of video memory bandwidth, but it also has amazing memory saving features. For example to get 720P with 4XFSAA on traditional architecture would require 28MB worth of memory. On the 360 only 16MB is required. There are also features in the 360's Direct3D API where developers are able to fit 2 128x128 textures into the same space required for one, for example. So even with all the memory and all the memory bandwidth, they are still very mindful of how it’s used.

The 360 GPU has 48 unified pipelines capable of accepting either pixel or vertex shader operations whereas with the older dedicated pixel and vertex pipeline architecture that RSX uses when you are in a vertex heavy situation most of the 24 pixel pipes go idle instead of helping out with vertex work.

Or on the flip side in a pixel heavy situation those 8 vertex shader pipelines are just idle and don’t help out the pixel pipes (because they aren’t able to), but with the 360’s unified architecture in a vertex heavy situation for example none of the pipes go idle. All 48 unified pipelines are capable of helping with either pixel or vertex shader operations when needed so as a result efficiency is greatly improved and so is overall performance. When pipelines are forced to go idle because they lack the capability to help another set of pipelines accomplish their task it’s detrimental to performance.

1080p is not a smart resolution to target in any form this generation, but if 360 developers wanted to get serious about 1080p, thanks to Xenos, could actually outperform the ps3 in 1080p. (The less efficient GPU always shows its weaknesses against the competition in higher resolutions so the best way for the rsx to be competitive is to stick to 720P) In vertex shader limited situations the 360’s gpu will literally be 6 times faster than RSX. With a unified shader architecture things are much more efficient than previous architectures allowed (which is extremely important). The 360’s GPU for example is 95-99% efficient with 4XAA enabled. With traditional architecture there are design related roadblocks that prevent such efficiency. To avoid such roadblocks, which held back previous hardware, the 360 GPU design team created a complex system of hardware threading inside the chip itself. In this case, each thread is a program associated with the shader arrays. The Xbox 360 GPU can manage and maintain state information on 64 separate threads in hardware. There's a thread buffer inside the chip, and the GPU can switch between threads instantaneously in order to keep the shader arrays busy at all times.

@ FaceMaster

The PS3 needs 7 cores to make up for that crappy 256MB RAM it has. Also bear in mind it has a much inferior GPU than the Xbox 360. It also has and that snail-pace Blu-Ray drive which forces you to install about 3GB of the game onto your hard drive which is absolutely ridiculous. And updates?! Don't get me started on those things! Last but not least, the PS3 is the most complicated for software developers to program games for out of all the current generation of consoles, resulting in developers releasing their games on other platforms. You think you have the better console. I say think again.

A PS3 is just a HTPC in a chrome case. I want a games console, I already have a PC!

Xbox 360 and PC's don't need dedicated Vertex Shaders, that's what "Unified" shaders are for in this day and age!

Bump Mapping? part of the Direct X 9 spec.

High Polygon Models? They have been claiming that for years, and they just KEEP getting more and more complex.

However, the Xbox 360 has an advantage with highly complex models with allot of Polygons, that particular technology is also known as the: "ATI Tessellation Engine".

Which in turn allows a developer to take a simple polygon mesh and subdivide it based on a curved surface evaluation function, with different tessellation forms as Bézier surfaces with N-patches, B-splines and NURBS, and even some subdivision surface techniques, which usually comes with a displacement map texture. Essentially, this allows a simple, low-polygon model to be increased dramatically in polygon density in real-time with minimized performance loss.

We're talking about HD here. 256MB RAM doesn't quite cut 1080p, hence the crappy 720p on most games, no matter how fast it is! It's like a cheetah and a truck.

The cheetah can run up to 80 odd MPH but it cant carry a hravy load on it's back and still do 80, whereas the truck can do 60 and stay at 60 with a heavy load in the back.

Yeah you're right, it's ahead of it's time,. but when did anything ahead of it's time ever succeed?

It's true it's processor walks all over anything available at this moment in time, but nothing a Skulltrail 2x 3.2GHz Core 2 Quad QX9750's and Tri Sli GTX 280's wouldn't beat the crap out of.

For the technology/price ratio, it can't be beaten, although those silly sods at Sony are making a loss on every PS3 sold.

It isn't anything special anymore now obviously. But back in 2005-2006 era the Geforce 7 Series and the Radeon X1K were the new stuff.

PS3's Cell Processor, can't be compared to X-86 general purpose processors. It has 1 central core and 7 mini cores, unlike the PC's where all 4 Cores or all 8 Cores in the case of a Skulltrail based system are identical and general purpose.

Obviously the best PC from the current time is going to crush what is available on the consoles since they have been out for over 2 years in the case of the PS3 and 3 for the 360.

Yeah that's a nice perk of owning a console all the hardware is subsidized. So it's has great technology/price ratio.

For most games that tends to be the case, only a small handful have it the opposite way.

PS3's RSX is basically a 7950 GT give or take, without as much memory bandwidth.

As for the 4670 comment, duh, that came out in 2008, and is based on considerably more advanced technology. PS3's GPU is from the Year 2006. Of course it's going to slaughter the PS3 RSX. A Single 4670 or 9600 GT will walk over not only the PS3's RSX but also the XBox 360 GPU.
