Philadelphia to get city-wide wireless internet network

The Philadelphia City Council has approved a plan to provide wireless high-speed internet access throughout the whole city. With the high speed wireless internet network, Philadelphia will be the first large city to have such amenities covering its 135 square miles of land. The wireless network will be built, operated, and maintained by EarthLink Inc. EarthLink should have the network fully deployed by Q3 2007 if everything goes as planned and is under a 10 year contract with the city of Philadelphia. According to the AP:

"Philadelphia is a city of many firsts and this is a first as well," said Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. "It's the first time a large municipality is saying we'll take an aggressive role in ensuring that the digital divide is bridged."

Network construction and testing will begin in June and cover parts of North and South Philadelphia. The testing is expected to last 3-4 months. EarthLink expects to target dial-up users which consists of quarter-million of the city’s population in addition to the city’s existing broadband customers. Pricing will be around $20 a month for the general population and $9.95 for low income residents.

Aside from Philadelphia, other large cities such as Chicago and San Francisco are also planning such projects.

That sucks for me, i'm only 30 minutes away. I should move there, i'd save almost $30 on my high speed internet and cost of living would go down too heh. But i'd probably get shot walking to my car so nevermind.

Oh boy. We can really tell you've been to Philly before. Maybe you should avoid New York, Dallas, D.C., Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Miami, Chicago. Philadelphia is no worse than any other city in the States.

As someone who has lived in the Philly suburbs (both PA side and NJ side) my whole life, with huge portion of my family growing up in Philadelphia. I know what that poster meant by making the comment he said about being shot.

It doesn't bring me pride to say this but Philadelphia actually has one of the highest murder rates in the nation and that is ranked with all those cities you mentioned. Also another sad sad commentary of our times--- Camden, NJ...according to FBI crime statistics for 2004 and 2005 -- highest murder rate in the entire country...and that includes LA (Compton, "South Central"), Chicago, Miami, NYC...all of them that people think of. I was shocked and it made me feel "weird" (only way to describe) to find out the city with the highest murder rate in the nation two years straight is only 30 minutes away from me (and if you don't live in this area its a hop and skip from Philadelphia).

This whole area is bad. Baltimore, which is just down the road, had the highest murder rate for a very long time. I dont know why but it seems all of the cities in the middle Northeast are relativly bad. I guess its because the cities arent really as rich as say Dallas or Seattle. It also probably has to do with drugs. I'm right beside Lancaster (York) and in a small town here like 60% of the kids were addicted to heroin.

Back to the article, yeah! Internet for poor people!

I believe that you've been or lived near Philadelphia only because you mentioned Camden. But still, Camden is separated from Philadelphia by the Delaware River. I can not find any news reports of bullets haling from Camden all the way over to Philly and striking an innocent bystander. With that being said, I am sure some will have difficulties in Philly, especially those the drive BMWs (or Mercedes Benzs) and enjoy driving on Broad Street often.

I've been to Philly many many times, even lived there for a year or so. It was more of a sarcastic remark then anything but you just took it way too seriously. Murder happens in Philly and if you want to say it doesnt then I must question how many times youve been there as you were so quick to claim that Ive never been to Philly. Some parts of Philly arent as bad as others but as the other poster said its right up there with one of the highest murder rates in the States.
