Philadelphia to get city-wide wireless internet network
The Philadelphia City Council has approved
a plan to provide wireless high-speed internet access throughout the
whole city. With the high speed wireless internet network, Philadelphia
will be the first large city to have such amenities covering its 135
square miles of land. The wireless network will be built, operated, and
maintained by EarthLink Inc. EarthLink should have the network fully
deployed by Q3 2007 if everything goes as planned and is under a 10
year contract with the city of Philadelphia. According to the AP:
"Philadelphia
is a city of many firsts and this is a first as well," said
Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. "It's the first time a large
municipality is saying we'll take an aggressive role in ensuring that
the digital divide is bridged."
Network construction and
testing will begin in June and cover parts of North and South
Philadelphia. The testing is expected to last 3-4 months. EarthLink
expects to target dial-up users which consists of quarter-million of
the city’s population in addition to the city’s existing broadband
customers. Pricing will be around $20 a month for the general
population and $9.95 for low income residents.
Aside from Philadelphia, other large cities such as Chicago and San Francisco are also planning such projects.
