Chinese website PConline benchmarks the Pentium E2160 and E2140

Early benchmarks of Intel’s upcoming Pentium E2100-series reveal the value processor doesn’t fall too far behind the Core 2 Duo E4000-series, when comparing equal clock speeds. Intel is set to introduce its Pentium E2100-series processors in June with sub-$100 pricing. The new processor is based on Intel’s Conroe core but halves the L2 cache of similar Core 2 Duo E4000-series, making for a total of 1MB of L2 cache.

Productivity benchmarks such as Business Winstone 2004 and Multimedia Content Creation Winstone 2004 show an approximate 1-point difference between the Pentium E2160 and Core 2 Duo E4300, favoring the E4300 – both processors have 1.8 GHz clock speeds. Video encoding in TMPGEnc 3.0 reveals a 1 second performance difference between the two processors, and again favoring the E4300.

Gaming performance with a GeForce 8800GTX show small performance differences as well. Games such as Half Life 2, Doom 3 Far Cry and Quake IV show minimal framerate differences around 1-4 FPS, at 1024x768. Serious Sam shows a larger delta at 7 FPS, favoring the Core 2 Duo E4300.

It's not the fact that Intel has the current performance crown that spells doom for AMD. It's the fact that Intel can release something like this for such a small price premium that is really going to squish AMD.

I love AMD to death, and my next PC purchase is going to be AMD, but with an $84 Core-based CPU hitting the market, AMD is going to be hard-pressed even on the low-end now. I can get an Athlon64 4200+ for $105 currently, which blows away anything that Intel offers at that price, but with these coming out, I can smell trouble on the front.

About the only thing now in AMD's favor is motherboard compatibility and pricing. AMD motherboards are much cheaper for equivilent features and forward compatibility is far superior. I just hope that'll be enough to continue to sway PC makers to continue going with AMD.

Everything I've been reading about Barcelona lately leads me to believe that the benefits of K10 will be server-side (quad-core performance). Besides, how many 'Average-Joe-Users' would really utilize a quad-CPU system?
I think that the SSE updates may prove interesting, but we'll have to wait & see.

In any event, at the time Barcelona/K10 will be available Intel will have released their Conroe refresh along with some healthy price-drops, which will be a good time for 'Average-Joe-User' to upgrade to a new PC - Intel or AMD.

I think you will need to wait for a very long time if you want to get Barcelona based dual core CPU for <$100...

Actually, the cheapest Pentium E will be available for only $74 which will make it even more attractive. It will also be very overclockable, 50% overclock to 2.4GHz is given. 100% overclock to 3.2GHz should be possible in most cases with a voltage bump. FSB will not be a limiting factor, since even at 3.2GHz, it will be only using 400MHz FSB which shouldn't be a problem for modern motherboards.

Quite the contrary, actually.

As a system builder, my job depends on both AMD and Intel to be able to put out their chips and platforms in quantity and for prices my customers are willing to pay. It just so happens that, in my current market conditions, people are looking more toward the "low" end, which still usually ends up being more than they generally use it for. Currently, AMD completely dominates this market.

With the dry-up of Intel's overstock of Pentium D processors, Intel simply doesn't make a chip that appeals to people in the sub-$700 retail market anymore. Previously, I could have used a Pentium D 805 or 915, but now I can no longer use those. On my midrange systems, it doesn't make as much difference, as I can squeeze the numbers around and usually offer a Core 2 Duo E4300 for the same price, provided the system already had a 965 chipset. If it was built on 945, there's no hope, and the price is going to go up.

But, when I can build a retail-level system with a gig of RAM and an Athlon64 X2 4600+ for a hair under $700, there really is no way for Intel to compete with that. At least, until these chips get released. For most general office and home solutions, they're never, ever going to need more than a 4600+. No quad cores, no barcelonas, no penryns. Those are enthusiast and professional solutions. The vast, vast majority of PC sales are in the low-mid range, where AMD currently dominates. A Core 2-based processor in that price range will certainly put the squeeze on AMD, though.

Do you think it would be possible to underclock one so that you could have fanless cooling? Getting closer to building a car pc and this would be plenty of oomph.

If you stick the heatsink under the car, you would have the equivalent of a 120mm fan running at 1 000 000 000 freaking rpm. Underclock? HAH! OVERCLOCK!

I had one of those coolers on my Prescott. ;)

I would think we can get this under 25 watts with an underclock. It might still require a fan but would certainly be less than road noise and would handle a hot summer day without going crazy.

You know how the exotic sports cars have all these air vents for the engine, the brakes and stuff? Well, you could have an air vent made for your run of the mill Focus or Camry or whatever, and if someone asks what it's for, you can say it's for your CPU!

Probably a bit better ... but according to xtremesystems' forums, the latest conroes have been overclocking fairly poorly ... hopefully, it's not the same with these Pentiums.

I must say, I'm surprised ... I thought 1MB of cache would severely castrate the performance (well simply said, because theInq tends to have AMD biases with articles written by that "certain author" who always gets it wrong). Guess not ...

bit off topic but do most conroe boards support "on the fly" windows based over/underclocking nowadays?
or has advanced speedstep made idle temps @2ghz and 3ghz pretty much the same?

E2140 beats 3600+
E2160 beats 4000+

But the 3600 will be priced 59 bucks after the 9th. Thats so cheap, I mind as well make a key chain out of a brand new processor instead of waiting for one to break.

I think there will be a need for a budget pc shootout.

Overall the CPU prices are cheap but the cost of the mobo and ram could be a deciding factor for both configs. Then there is the overclock ability comparison.

I was thinking my next PC is gonna be an OC'd E4300 but at these prices and performance, the Pentium E's just got into contention. Key question is whether they overclock reasonably (and preferably without the need for special cooling).

I have been playing with it for some time and they are great performers for their segment. The pretty chip can hit 100% OC, on air, on stock cooler :)
