The best virtualization software for Macs just got better

This week Parallels announced that its popular virtualization platform for OS X, Parallels Desktop, now supports Windows Vista. The application gained instant overnight fame with Mac users by bringing exceptionally fast virtualization to Intel-based Mac computers. What made Parallel's software so much faster than others was its use of VT technology in Intel's Core Duo processors. All current Macs support VT technology. The new list of features includes:
  • Guest OS support for Windows Vista Beta1, Beta2, and RC1
  • Stronger support for Intel Virtualization Technology and AMD Secure Virtual Machine Technology (SVM). These technologies drive superior virtual machine performance and stability.
  • Improved USB support, including stronger support for isochronous and Windows Mobile 2005 USB devices
  • Faster, smoother Shared Folders utility
From the list, AMD's virtualization technology is also now supported along with Intel's VT. Parallels is also making its Parallels Workstation 2.2 compatible with Windows Vista. According to the press release:

Parallels Workstation enables users to simultaneously run any version of Windows, including Beta and RC builds of Windows Vista, any Linux distribution, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, OS/2, eComStation or DOS, in a stable, secure virtual machine on any computer running Windows 2000, XP or 2003, or any version of Linux.

Parallels marketing manager Benjamin Rudolph said "using Parallels Workstation 2.2 to run Windows Vista in a safe, stable, secure virtual environment is a great opportunity for all PC users, especially corporations evaluating Vista for large-scale deployment." Currently, Parallels applications have been so well received that Apple features Parallels Desktop in its documentation -- both online and offline. Parallels previously announced that it was working on supporting hardware 3D acceleration in its applications.

"AMD secure virtual machine"
"AMD's virtualization technology is also now supported along with Intel's VT"

What does this have to do with a Mac? Apple is not using AMD's cpu's and even if you bought a Mac, you couldn't swap out the processors anyways, since they use totally different technology and pinouts.

Is there something on the horizon that has not been announced? ;)

I do not believe AMD's support has anything to do with the Mac, just the capabilities of this version. The host machine is not Mac-specific, but was just used as an example in this article.

The article discusses 2 distinct products, Parallels Desktop (Mac) and Parallels Workstation (Windows). Both products gain the ability to run Windows Vista as a guest operating system and, evidentially, the Windows version takes advantage of technology in AMD processors now.

Parrallels?
