New Treo to arrive in Europe

Palm, Microsoft and Vodaphone this week announced a joint program to develop the next generation of Treo hand-held smartphones. The new phone will be an industry first says Palm, offering compatibility with Vodaphone's 3G/UMTS network. Palm says that using Microsoft's Windows Mobile, Treo customers will experience "the hallmark Palm experience."

Although no specific model names have been released, Palm says that products will initially be released in Europe. No details on a North American release were given. Palm says that the new device will be based on Windows Mobile 5.0 and include technologies such as Direct Push and other security enhancing features. From the press release:

The Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphone that will result from this collaboration will represent an industry first by operating on Vodafone's 3G/UMTS network and delivering the hallmark Palm experience on top of the Microsoft Windows Mobile(R) operating system. The new Treo smartphone will be available first to Vodafone customers in multiple European countries, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands, before the end of the calendar year.

DailyTech earlier reported that Palm was already in the works with Microsoft and Vodaphone. The company had a press conference earlier this year, detailing a joint program to release new Windows Mobile based smartphones in Europe. Palm also noted that it was going after the market currently dominated by RIM devices and that the compatibility and feature list of Windows Mobile would give users better advantages. Palm says more information will be released on the new Treo when commercial availability dates near.

I wonder how many tries and years by Palm & Microsoft to unseat Blackberry.

While RIM is slowly putting out newer features, mostly for refinement, nothing new.

With Microsoft it tends to take 3 tries to create a product that can dominate a market, though they sometimes work faster.

Lets see here... I will name a few MS products that totally sucked rocks at first, then later, after many years and many incrementally updated versions dominated the industry completely.

1. Windows (like it or not, 90% of the market it alot of cash)
2. MS Office
3. Inernet Explorer (ok, firefox and several others are better, but that is just recent developments and it still is the #1 used browser by far)
4. PPC/Win Mobile (well on its way)

MS will own the wireless email sector too someday, it may take several years, and several more versions, but it will happen.
