Palm's newest 700p device
Palm adds EVDO capabilities to its latest smartphone

Palm has launched another Treo Smartphone. The company launched the Windows Mobile 5.0 based Treo 700w back in January and today the company has announced the Treo 700p which uses Palm OS 5.4.9 and is powered by a 312MHz Intel XScale processor. 128MB of non-volatile memory is included; 60MB of which are available to the user. But most important of course is the network support for the new phone. The Treo 700p supports CDMA 800/1900MHz and CDMA2000 EvDO (backwards compatible with 1xRTT and IS95).

The 6.4 ounce phone features a color 320x320 screen, 1.3 megapixel digital camera with 2x digital zoom and 352x288 video capture. Bluetooth 1.2 is supported and a Secure Digital slot is included for additional storage/peripheral add-ons. The Treo 700p offers up 4.5 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time.

The Treo 700p will be available at first on Sprint-Nextel and Verizon Wireless networks. Pricing will be announced in the coming weeks by both carriers.

Palm Infocenter has posted its preview of the new device and they go over all of new software, features and capabilities of the new Treo 700p. Here's a blurb on the device's wireless modem capabilities:

You can use the Treo 700p as a wireless modem for your laptop or desktop computer. Palm now includes an easy to setup DUN (dial up networking) connection that can be used over Bluetooth or with the USB cable. The included USB cable will now also trickle charge the device so you don't have to worry about draining the battery when using it in DUN mode. Not all carriers may support this feature, and some might even require you to purchase a additional DUN data plan.

I thought palm was transitioning over to Windows Mobile... Is that not happening anymore?

Windows Mobile SUCKS! The OS gets really slow after a day's worth of use. (kinda like Windows on the PC) My friend does PDA support for a large company here in town and he tested the 700w for about a month before he couldn't take it anymore. Needless to say, he went back to his Treo 650 and hasn't looked back.

I'm sure the lack of interest/sales of the 700w urged the return of the Palm OS back where it belongs. :)

I'm DEFINITELY buying one of these come my next phone upgrade.

Where on earth did you hear that? PAlm has been stating publicly for nearly a year that they will ADD Windows devices to thier lineup, but not to remove Palm OS. There will be both OS on all models moving foreward.

I like the Palm OS, but I don't like the micro key board. Do they still make Palm phones that don't have a keyboard and use the calligraphy stuff? I find that so much faster then maneuvering my thumb nails to hit the correct key.

There is an older Samsung model that has Palm OS w/ graffiti, and no keyboard... I dont know the model #, and I dont know if they have a newer replacement, but its a good place to start looking.

That's the Sprint SPH-i500. PalmOS 4.1. Sprint may still have them, not sure.

Crap.... everytime a new phone...esp the Treo's come out, all the exec's at my company want one.

The "old" ones get shoved into a drawer, never to be used again.

Waste of money....$$$$$

Why don't you reuse them by issuing them to lower level employees?

Eventually, everyone will have one.

i still use a kuocera 7135 smartphone, hopefully a decent replacement is the 700p. all the other palm treo's have had too many downsides.

Me too. I like my 7135, nevermind all it's faults. I keep looking for a worthy replacement, but PalmOS phones are precious few these days. I'd even entertained the idea of buying an unlocked GSpda M68 and trying to get it activated on a local network (I'd really like an M98, but I'm not sure those actually exist). That Qool QDA-700 on Palmsource's site looks cool too (of course it does), but I think those are asian market only (if they actually exist.. it's hard to tell). Don't even get me started on the disappointing non-existance of the Samsung SCH-539.

As near as I can tell, the list of PalmOS phones generally available in the US begins and ends with the Treo 650, and now 700P too.
